Self-Serve Football?

Hi there.

I'm a final year Product Design Student at the Glasgow School of Art who is currently running a project entitled Self-Serve-Us which basically looks at designing into a climate that sees consumers gaining more power in regard to dictating how certain products and services are delivered to them.

My main focus for this project is football (hence why i'm posting in this forum)and how fans' input into a football match can determine the outcome of their experience. My initial research so far has brought me to ask the following question:

What if fans managed their football team?

Having spraffed somewhat to outline the project, i would like to ask a few questions to all footballing fanatics:

  1.
  2. Have you ever questioned your club managers decisions (i bet you have)? If so can you elaborate on one such instant? [what was the decision?, how would you have made it better?]
  3. What do you think are the primary managerial duties at your football club?
  4. Given the chance, what sort of managerial decisions would you like to influence the most at your football club? (e.g. would you like to have more say in back-room matters such as transfers and wages, or would you rather like to have more say in the 1st hand tactics of the team?) Please specify, if you can, why you would like more control over the decisions you have mentioned above.
  5. Also, is anyone familiar with the 'Football Manager' PC games? If so, what are your thoughts on the experience they provide?

That's all for now. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions (i know its a bit of a long post)and i appreciate the insights and help that your answers may provide for my project.

Cheers

Howdy,

I don't think many people who are into football would advocate looking over the shoulder of their manager about his/her on the park decisions. But as many threads here or any other football forum will testify to, many people feel the fans should have more say in regards to how the overall football buisness is ran which has indirect implications for 'on the park stuff'. Some people are into the idea that the fans own the club and that they elect people onto a committee that acts as the board of directors (fan ownership) whilst others think fans should have a more advisory role towards a board of directors where the buisness is run accross traditional lines with shareholders and that. Then there are others who believe that being a fan constitutes going to a ground supporting your team by paying for the products and having a non critical approach towards the directors. Some may even argue that being critical is somehow a lack of faith in the team.

Some examples of fan owned teams locally are clydebank fc and stirling albion. Down in england there is fc united of manchester (fcum) and afc wimbledon.

I'd suggest you contact supporters direct who have an office in glasgow who im sure will be able to give you some comprehensive infomation as to the debates that exist within football including some up to date information. Just give them a google.
