  1. Objective achieved although the performance lacked any semblance of fluency.

Well deserved MoM for Lewis Neilson, and that was even before he sealed it with his goal. He timed his last ditch tackle perfectly in the first half; the yellow card was an insult. Stevie Lawless needs to be careful though, his yellow for dissent was merited and that's not the first time he's been in a referee's ears in recent weeks.

BBG was not at his best today, likewise Aero. Howler from Jamie, but these things will happen once in a while.

Any chance Scott Robinson could stay fit enough for a few weeks to get a regular start? If so, that's an attacking option in the hole that is better than McInroy or Alston to these eyes.

Anyway, Happy New Year to all fellow Jags fans and onwards to Saturday!!

  2. What exactly is your agenda javeajag?

Full disclosure please - to an objective (in my case) observer of Doolan's tenure, I have the impression that you are desperate for him to fail for some reason.

Or have I read that wrong???

  3. Overall, happy with where we are at present, but clearly there is room for improvement both on the park (goals conceded, late game sitting off teams inviting opposition attacks) and off (several players not getting game time, so why are they here?).

Obviously you can't change the past, but in retrospect the needless loss of two points to Raith Rovers on the opening day was a serious blow given what they have achieved since.

Dundee United and Raith have clearly demonstrated they are above us on merit, and it's how we are able to respond during this window that will determine whether we are capable of mounting some kind of serious challenge to them before May. Consolidating third spot should be the immediate aim (next two games are pivotal to that) and see how we are placed to proceed after the window.

Fitzpatrick was not on his way out under McCall.  McCall planned to extend Fitzpatricks, Lawless, Dochertys, Holts, Turner and Tiffoneys contracts before being told there was no money left due to the massive overspend.

Amazing how Fitzpatrick appears to be the main blame for defeats.  Yes he was poor last night but him and Lawless were still our most dangerous players.  I wasn’t impressed by any of our players last night barring Lawless

Also does anyone really think Fitzpatrick went out to deliberately put in a poor performance on his 100th appearance when he was talking about before the game how proud he was to have reached 100 appearances

As for the rank rotten last year comment- complete over reaction.  Do you think so many fans would have been delighted at him signing a new deal with us if he was?  He had decent games and some poor ones.  If it wasn’t for his goals against Arbroath that got us to a decent payday against Aberdeen in the cup and in particular his goal against Dunfermline in the Scottish cup which got us literally a club saving payday against Rangers then I hate to see how much more of a financial mess we would have been in

TL, it looks like you completely misread the intention of my post.

Nowhere was it implied that Aidan is 'the main blame for defeats' (your words).

Did he underperform under McCall? - yes, as his performances since the play-offs have manifestly demonstrated.

Has he improved under Kris Doolan? - yes, and in spades.

Did he score important goals in cup ties last season? - yes, to his great credit.

Was he a liability defensively last season? - yes, on numerous occasions (see the Ayr league games for evidence).

Did he put in a 'poor performance' (again, your words) on his 100th appearance? - Not in my opinion, although he should have at least forced a save from the opportunity that he created for himself at the end of the first half.

Is he currently an asset to the team? - without any question.

I will adjust my 'rank rotten' assessment last season to 'underperformed relative to his ability'. Would that seem fairer to you based on the evidence?

Probably did but I can't be that certain. Don't really want to start singling out individual players as they were more or less all drastic tonight.

Just starting to thaw out. Fingers still too cold to type much. Only to say I don't believe we had a single shot on target tonight. Gave the ball away so many times that even if we had been at our best defending (we were far from it) we were always going to lose a goal.

McMillan had one down at the keeper's near post just before they made it 2-0.

    That was it though.

He really doesn’t like Adeloye does he.. I always find this ends up the problem. Well has been the 2 times McCall has left.

Our recruitment has been woeful, Bar one or 2 who’s the best signing we have made, that has been signed by someone other than McCall ? I can’t think of anyone other than Scott McDonald who has done anything special.

Steven Anderson was certainly a good signing.

That’s a fair point. My frustration with Fitzy is how much talent he clearly has but when he’s not at his best, he is miles off it.

He’s still relatively young and will improve but his off the ball play needs to be miles better (and yes, he’s far from alone).

This is a point for debate.

Has he really progressed since his first spell with us?

IMO, he was on his way out under McCall because he was rank rotten for most of last season. He does seem to have responded to KD's coaching though - whatever that may be - and he certainly took the opportunity when Banzo got injured during the play-offs.

He seems to have been enjoying his football since then, which is a good thing.

But the plain fact is he's still playing at the same level he was playing at 5 years ago.

Tonight's team talk: the last time up here, we were not as strong as we are now and we still beat then, and, this lot's confidence is poor, early goal and fans will be on their back. Get stuck tight in, and we owe them from the game at Firhill. 2 up by hakf time and we take them apart 2nd half.

    Hmm.

What's the half-time team talk now Big Wull?

Or should air traffic control be looking for flying teacups in the Dens Road area?

  9. Utterly honking first 30 minutes, United could and perhaps should have been 5-0 up in that period alone.

We've gradually built a bit of momentum since then, but I fear that, like the game at Firhill, if United get the next goal we could implode.

1-0 is always retrievable, but Dools needs to have a credible Plan B, because whatever he sent them out to do tonight got blown away in the first quarter of the game.

I raised the question about Tiffoney and Turner bring possible loan acquisitions solely because they were very good players for us under Doolan and are not certain starters at their clubs. I also asked would we want them back not because of anything to do with the manner of their leaving or doubts about their commitment but solely because of the squad we have and whether their return would create and overload of midfield and wide players.

I agree a defensive midfielder is a priority but I would have Tiffoney and Turner (and Holt, not sure about Docherty) back in a jiffy!!

Docherty's been the biggest loss out of the four of them.

Many are now beginning to realise that his dirty work on the ball, and more importantly the cover he provided off the ball has been a glaring omission from our play this season.

Other than the Reserve Cup win(s) I particularly remember a "Combination League"? match against Glasgow University when we were in the second division.  The "away" support easily outnumbered the home support! - although the result was never truly in doubt. As a 9 year old I was particularly disappointed that my late father chose to support his "alma mater" rather than his team of choice but he did assure me it was for that match only!

JeanieD, that would have been the Combined Reserve League. In addition to Glasgow University, other participants included Glasgow Corporation Transport and Jordanhill College. Thistle won both the Autumn and Spring versions of the tournament in 1970-71!!!

From wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_Reserve_Football_League#:~:text=The Combined Reserve Football League, the Scottish Reserve Football League.): The Combined Reserve Football League was formed in 1958 as a reserve football league for the Scottish Football League Second Division sides that were excluded from the Scottish Reserve Football League.

  12. Game over.

Criminal and idiotic from Sneddon - it's basics that you only pass out to a player who is in a position to receive and turn comfortably.

Oh hang on - like last week we score without our player having an effort on goal.

    Game back on..........hopefully

  13. Apart from the first minute, we've created the sum total of the square root of bugger all.

On another subject, very surprised to see Jamie Sneddon being allowed to wear that keepers' top given the very obvious clash with our main strip tonight.

  14. Others have pointed out the weaknesses in detail, so no need to repeat.

Sneddon my MoM. Made a couple of important stops in the first half and several excellent catches in the second half.

Whatever the plan for the second half was, please rip it up and put it in the bin. Continually allowing the opposition to come out of their own half unchallenged is not a good idea under any circumstances. Thank the gracious Lord for that horrible miss at the end. Had that gone in, the result would not have been unjustified given the way we conceded possession throughout the half.

This might be one for the PT Archive experts but by joining Clyde as manager does that make McCall the first person to have had a connection to the remaining or indeed previous (if you prefer)  "Glasgow" sides.

As far as I know (which might not be much) - he started at Celtic before arriving at Queen's Park then via Dunfermline (not a Glasgow side!) to Glasgow Rangers and ultimately arrived at Firhill after a few detours, culminating in his appointment by Clyde.

His career might be described as either very lucky or very unlucky dependant on your point of view in this regard.

Ian began his career as a teenager at Motherwell before being released.

Thereafter he trained with Glasgow University FC before being taken on by Queens Park.

There has never been a connection with Celtic, as far as I am aware.

yeh seems a odd one unless he got injured?

Milne off early, McInroy at ht and Graham subbed at 1-1, and none of them ostensibly due to injury?

Perhaps there's some kind of bug going round?

Anyway, objective achieved after a fashion. Two smashing finishes for the goals, but we didn't really trouble McDonald much beyond those efforts.

Well done to the players and the management team for digging out the win.

Happy Saturday evening to all Jags fans!!
