The key benefit is a conveyor-belt of talent that generates (at least initially) inexpensive first-team players and/or transfer and sell-on fees further down the line. I understand that, across Liam Lindsay, Kevin Nisbet, Aidan Fitzpatrick, James Penrice and others, the Academy has (there or thereabouts) generated revenue for the Club well into 7-figures. The sell-on fees and training compensation payments can get really quite substantial if a player goes on to bigger and better things.

Worth emphasising that, at the moment, the Club does not pay to run the Academy. After exhausting the (extensive) capital put in by Colin Weir, the Academy is being funded mostly by a benefactor, partly by sponsorship and partly by the new TJF pledge, this season.

There are legitimate questions about how to make the Academy sustainable to fund in the longer-term, but as indicated in the TJF consultation on the pledge, the Club simply wasn't in the position to commit financial (or major administrative) support to it back in the summer.

Unless a decision is made to make savings elsewhere in the Club's budget, I don't anticipate this changing. The solution will therefore need to find a way of meeting costs in the short-term and an equitable way of splitting income from graduates sold-on in the longer-term.

Without the intervention of the benefactor in late summer, let's be clear though: there would be no Thistle Weir Youth Academy still in existence.

Thanks for that, do we have any idea of the cost of running an effective Academy. I realise that there may be a degree of commercial confidentiality over stats but a ball park estimate may give us an idea.

  2. I feel that maintaining the Academy should be a major way for the club, producing our own players from an early age supplemented by "feeding in" some teenagers discarded by other Clubs should/could, as @fifexile said, reduce some wages and hopefully bring some cash back to the Club through transfers , sell on and training fees etc.

This does require a commitment that we are willing to give the youngsters game time and also commit long term to the Academy. As a fan owned Club we hopefully will have a say in this and make this a priority.

Looking at Hamilton a few years back, they did really well at this a few years back but due to a number of events and decisions seem to have given up on this. Although, I have no idea of their current team make up.

  3. We really need to have some real communication and clarification of the current position and direction of the Club from the Board and the other Groups involved.

As fans we deserve better, we turn up at games, contribute financially through TJF and the Club through gate receipts, centenary funds and sponsorship, as well as our emotional investment.

We cannot continue to play the blame game of its the Board, its the Trust without being informed of what is actually going on at the Club.

The timing of the sackings was bizarre, if it was after the last home game I would understand. To make this announcement, in such a manner, so soon after one of our best performances at Ibrox in years makes us look completely ridiculous.

Looks like another one of your youngsters (U15s I believe) will be moving on:

Celtic are closing in on the signing of Scotland youth international Hayden Borland as they look set to land the Partick Thistle youngster.

Celtic made an approach to Thistle to speak to Borland last month and now look to have beaten off stiff competition to land him.

Borland has previously been on trial at Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were also watching his situation closely.

Celtic would have to pay compensation to Thistle if Borland moves to Celtic and eventually goes on to sign professional forms.

It would be nice if we could hang on to our emerging talent. The two or three that have made the step up have not disappointed when getting the opportunity for the first team. One or to more having the chance would be pleasing.

  5. I presume  that this will be picked up by BBC Alba at some point and even if it brings a bit of extra publicity for the Club it has to be a positive thing in my opinion.

I have no concern over the potential loss of some visiting supporters should we have a fixture against The Rangers in protest against the signage.

It reminds me of a guy when finding out the cost of hand gel was £5 a bottle in the local shop said "I've never shopped there before and I tell you, I wont be going back!"

And the follow-up question is whether they will automatically be preferred as starters over our own youngsters.

I can see Stanway and Lyon going  out on loan. I think McCall hinted that he felt that McKenzie was the one that is ready to step into the first team squad.

I think he feels that both Stanway and Lyon require regular game time and McKenzie, being younger, can be brought through gradually.

    I may be wrong though.

I think IMC knows full well what Turner can do through the middle and that this is his strongest position.  I have been advocating, with many others on WAT that  he should be played in that position/role. However I also think IMC values what he gets from the Docherty-Bannigan partnership.

It seems to me that  IMC is being very loyal to Bannigan whom I think should be moved to the bench as the back up player in preference to a Docherty-Turner partnership in central midfield.

Good performance last night and as much as I hate to admit it  I thought after looking again at the disallowed goals that the  assistant ref and Walsh,  whom I think is one of our poorer refs, got it right!

5 vg penalties as well - really thumped them into the net. Why the players' reaction to Hemmings? Was he sledging or do we just not like him?

Yes, I noticed the reaction of Aero, Brian and Kyle to the keeper when they scored their penalties. Hemmings must have been up to something.

Raith board announcement.  They got it wrong; Badwillie won't play; the club will enter negotiations to cancel his contract.

Who will he go to now? Falkirk?  Dundee must be an option- they don't have any morals or scruples. The Boris of Scottish football!!

I can see him returning to Clyde. Fans of most Clubs were vocally against him while the Clyde fans were mourning the loss of a "legend".

Did he not chose to jump ship when it looked like Falkirk were a stick on for the title? Perhaps I'm not remembering it correctly but if I am girfuy.

Pretty much so, I think that he signed a pre contract agreement but then approached us again indicating that he may have been able to get out of it when Falkirk Hib'sed it.

"Naw, yer aw right son" I believe was McCall's response.

Having the vaccination does not stop you catching it or transmitting it, the same as the flu vaccination, it limits the transmission level and severity if caught. So if your vaccinated (as I am) you’ve protected yourself firstly and limited the spread secondary.

2000 people die almost every week in UK from the Flu why are we not legislating for that?

This is a dangerous step towards a 2 tier system in Scotland, what’s next can’t claim dole, get a bank loan or get a doctors appointment if you can’t provide your medical history? What’s next to be added?

Where do you get the "2000 people die almost every week in UK from the Flu" ?

Even looking at the ONS stats for Deaths due to Influenza and Pneumonia published for England and Wales in 2020, it varies between 215 and the two maximum weeks were 821 and 931. Even adding in approximately 10% for Scotland and NI it would not reach 2000.

I would also assume that some of the pneumonia deaths would be due to pneumococcal strains of pneumonia.

Slightly off topic but there was a letter in the Herald this week about face coverings and it made me wonder what the law (as opposed to the recommendation) is with regards to the fitba'.  The current regulations (updated 3 days ago) in the SG's website list 23 situations where face coverings are mandatory by law. They include "sports stadiums".  No mention of indoors or outdoors or both. Looking at crowd shots at Hampden last night and other TV highlights suggests virtually no-one is wearing them. Is there a mass defiance here or is it a case that the regulations aren't understood? There is a deafening silence from the authorities.

I was as Hampden last night, did a lateral flow before and I reckon mask wearing was only about 10%. Disappointing particularly with the complete shambles at the turnstiles with vast numbers missing the kick off by about 20 minutes. We queued from well before kick off and only just got in to "hear" the goal from the stairwell.

It was a visual inspection of the ticket rather than scan, the majority of the fans outside were unmasked and pretty vocal. Little or no stewarding.

No point in the SFA setting guidelines and not ensuring that they are effective.

"No point in the SFA " also stands alone as a statement in my opinion.

  12. Having retired from a career in heath care and having family members still on the front line, I am all in favour of anything that can restrict the spread of Covid.

I know of at least two close associates that did not stick to guidance because it "interfered" with their freedom who subsequently became infected with Covid and required hospital admission. One also infected family members.

It is up to individuals whether the want to have the vaccine, but my concern would be the effect of passing on infection to others.

Before attending matches I currently take a lateral flow test, it may not be 100% accurate but I believe in trying to do my bit to protect others around me.

I have had both jags and am in possession  of a vaccine certificate. I have no issues with it being required to attend some events. It is unlikely that it will be required by many of us for Thistle games this season unless circumstances change.

Having considered the consequences of infecting others ,  I will do all that I can to protect others. If this includes showing my vaccination status before entry to some events, I will happily do so.

I realise that others will have a different opinion, which they are entitled to.

Attendance at events which require vaccine status certificates is not mandatory after all.

Gospel Ocholi has went out on loan to Benburb for the season, which would suggest we’ve reached an agreement to bring in the winger McCall mentioned. McDaid?

I think that McDaid is unlikely, he seems settled and unlikely to drop a League.

I understand that the 90% was for under 55’s ? and if that is backed up with further review, it is going to make the cost of vaccinating everybody a good bit less.

Yes it was in the under 55 age group that they claim 90% . I understand 60-70% across the population. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

They are a few other vaccines being developed one intriguingly  called Sputnik.

Pfizer also ran a trial which initially found 90% efficacy but the major caution should be that their placebo group also showed 90% .

Its early days and I feel that any potential vaccine  may detract from the need to stay safe  in the short to medium term.

I have to confess that I have not read in any particular detail the results of the studies and have relied on the brief news reports. I understood that the 2 full doses had a higher effectiveness than the flu vaccine has ? And that in the cases of people mistakenly given 1 half dose and one full dose the effectiveness was over 90 % ?  We need to remember that penicillin was discovered by accident. I do agree with you that it’s likely to be quite some time before we are through this even with vaccinations starting in December.

I think that the issue with the 90% was that it was in the younger cohort tested.

My issue with the Pharmaceutical companies is that they tend to over sell  the potential of their products. (After all that is their own products that they are promoting).

We had a few managed service contracts that tied us in to companies and their products.  On very rare occasions things went smoothly.

I just don’t get it. Why is there any talk of opening up stadia ? We should be doing all we can to reduce social interface to the minimum possible.

I don't get  the opening up the stadium to help clubs financially either. Season ticket holders have paid , there would be no hospitality or food stalls. Club shops are unlikely to be open and you would have additional costs in stewarding and staff. I would assume that there would also be additional costs in deep cleaning of toilets, turnstiles etc. and at least wipe downs of seating areas before and after use.

I would love to be back at games but I cannot see how "walk ups" on game days could save clubs from the financial abyss during the pandemic.

On the "Cruise  critic "  website  (P&O thread), a number of health care workers in England have said that they have appointments for Tuesday  1st  December  for their 1st  Covid  vaccination . 2nd following 2 weeks later.

If this is true,  at least one vaccine is due to be approved tomorrow or Monday.

My background is Biomedical Science. I would be very cautious about the potential for an vaccine being rolled out soon that  will be effective over vast swathes of the population.  At least one pharmaceutical company has had to draw back from their claims when they discovered that their own data was flawed.

A number of companies are working on vaccines which may be effective but we have to remember that they are commercial companies selling "hope" to willing buyers worldwide.

My concern is that there is a lot of hype about at present with very little substance behind it. I hope that I am wrong.
