  1. What is Thistle's record at scoring penalties?

I am never that confident that they'll be converted.

I seem to remember Roberts and Doolan missing a few.

Doolan miss at Falkirk at the beginning of last season. Roberts may have missed a couple but his general record including penalty shoot outs must have been pretty good. Scored penalty in play off gane at Stranraer.

  2. Young age surprised me too, but was he not only 16/17 when he first broke into the first team towards the end of our stay in the SPL if I recall correctly? Prominent in the celebrations at Peterhead.

Surely there is still a small measure of hope for him and his football career if somehow he comes into contact with the right sort of mentor. Yet he has thrown away so many chances..........

  3. Nope. It was a 1-1 draw. Jukka Santala/Ally Brown had scored for us. Santala hit a shot from 20 yards, hit the post and Ally Brown deflected it into his own net.

How could I have forgotten that Santala slow motion shot and Brown's equally slow motion fumble into the net!?

Another painful missed penalty has been recalled to memory.

Mark Roberts near the beginning of a League Cup tie at Firhill at which point we were totally dominating Aberdeen. The miss rather knocked the wind from our sails and Aberdeen gradually assumed control and won 2-0.

  4. He missed a penalty at Starks Park which would have given us the win.

Was it a 0-0? Must have been fairly ealy in the season as I remember the other game at Raith being on a freezing cold February night. When Sandy Hodge scored with a header it was the only Jags goal I have not been able to celebrate properly as I had just taken delivery of a steaming hot Bovril (other beef drinks were no doubt available). Jimmy Gibson scored the winner with a speculative shot which took a strange bounce and mesmerised the goalkeeper.

  5. Dick Campbell's teams were utterly woeful to watch, but they could win a penalty shoot out.

The otherwise awful Sean Kilgannon was a sure scorer in all these penalty shoot outs, though did he not miss a late spot kick away at Raith Rovers which denied us a draw?

  6. His two first team goals have both been with his feet from close range and for all his height, I cannot recall him threatening the goal with a header in his starts and sub appearances. Does anyone know the respective proportions of his headed and footed (?) goals for Albion Rovers?

  7. Unfortunately he wouldn't score in a barrel of fannies. I fear this is the beginning of the end for Christie. I don't doubt he's got something, but he's not a goalscorer, and strikers need to be.

Yet when Elliot first came into a much poorer Thistle team last season, he was by far our most potent goalscorer, usually because he shot half a second earlier than defences expected. His goal away against Livingston was a good example. So where has that special sharpness gone? Is it lack of confidence or is there some other explanation?

Different sort of player, but there are parallels with Fernando Torres, trying too hard because somehow he cannot recapture what used to come naturally.

  8. I'm sure he scored on his debut

My recollection is that Trigger McLean and SuperSwede Peter Lindau made their debuts in the same game and that it was Lindau who scored.

Trigger's appearances in his first season were limited by injury and I think he scored only two goals, though both in memorable games. One was in the ten-man 2-0 win at Stirling Albion after Kevin Budd was sent off and the other was the cup winner at Firhill against Livingston (then in a higher league).

  9. I'll trump all that lot in one.

Thistle 0 Cowdenbeath 1 in 1993. Third round of the Scottish Cup.

They were bottom of division 1 having won once all season, and we had a penalty to equalise, which the late lamented Don made a cod of. That was the pits. Apart from the already mentioned Tannadice, of course.

And re season 97-98, does anyone else remember the outstanding 50 yard pass from Chic in the last minute at Cappielow, which on any other day in the history of human life would have earned us a 1-1 draw? However on this day, it fell in front of Jimmy Boyle, six yards out...............

Am I right in my recollection that Andy Lyons hit the bar near the end of that game? Typical frustrating 1-0 loss where we played badly and did not deserve a point but could still have snatched one.
