Not a bad result re cementing our place in 3rd but obviously Raith are the real winners this weekend. After losing from a two goal lead last week it's nice to see us at least nearly redress the balance. Couldn't make it today so I'll be interested to hear proper opinion from those who made the trip.

Just in from Inverness. Mixed bag of thoughts.

Poor first 20 minutes, but then we came into the game. Strangely we conceded all 3 goals at times when we were actually playing well.

I am generally supportive of Jamie Sneddon, but sadly he did look to be at fault with at least the first two goals. The first goal was a speculative long ranger which had good direction but nothing like the power Kerr McInroy generated last week. Jamie seemed to scoop his hand over or round the ball. A solid shovel of the ball to the side looked to be eminently possible. The second goal was at the far end so harder to comment on, but it appeared that an Inverness player had an unopposed header from 2 yards in front of the centre of the goal, in an area you would expect the goalkeeper to be commanding.

First half we were very slow and ponderous, shuffling the ball from side to side with no pace or creativity and then launching a long diagonal ball. Even when well directed, by the time the target player had got the ball down, the initiative had been lost.

McMillan's absence seemed an ideal opportunity to start O'Reilly, and move Muirhead to right back where he has always been decent, plus adding the long throw option. Williams did not play particularly badly, but he kept checking back and could not get any link up going with Lawless. I would agree with the poster who said that Lawless was off form, but only as regards the first half where he was anonymous. In the second half we stopped playing the long diagonal balls and began passing much more quickly and incisively through the midfield. Lawless came right into the game and had an excellent second half.

McBeth really grew into the game and was particularly good in the second half. He was harshly penalised on occasion, so perhaps has to learn the dark art of winning the ball strongly without apparently committing a foul. Fitzpatrick was not on his best form, but kept trying (as witness his goal) and was unusually passionate in trying to galvanise the rest of the team into action.

Scott Robinson was the real difference maker today. He is nimble and quick thinking on the ground as you might expect (as in winning the penalty), but also has a spring heeled leap to win unexpected and well-directed headed passes. We really need several consecutive injury-free performances like that.

Graham took the penalty well and his volley for the third goal was brilliant.

Great credit to the fans today. They really stuck with the team and inspired the fightbacks. For all the shortcomings in the team today, you do also have to credit their fighting spirit in keeping coming back, especially when the goals lost could easily have been dispiriting.

Not quite sure where O'Reilly was playing when he came on, but he seemed to be everywhere, not least in the attack. Looks like a quality and committed player who should be starting.

I am such a slow typer, 6 others have posted since I started. Apologies if I have duplicated anything they have said!

In all honesty is finishing 2nd good or bad? I know it’s 2 less games finishing 2nd but I think Ayr’s gap between games last season hindered them while we built up momentum. ICT beat Arbroath who were 2nd the season before too.

Also if the top 2 finish quite close the runner-up might be a bit deflated (see above for Arbroath)

    Just my thoughts

The main positive of finishing second is the substantial extra prize money.

Although last season reaching the play off final made us feel like we had finished second, the reality is that we picked up only fourth place prize money.

I do agree with you. James is no longer a teenager so probably past the "bulking up" stage we often see with players in their late teens.

More as a generalisation it is not unusual for a player whose footballing ability is not in question to fail on loan at a lower league side then go on to be successful with his parent club. Most often it's a case of being bullied off the ball playing for the former and being protected at the latter. Kinda like a ball player with zero pace being successful as the players round him more than compensate. Like Ross Forbes in our promotion season. Point I'm making is it's not just the level we send our youngsters out to. Gotta take into consideration how they'll fit into the team they're farmed out to*.

    * edited to that I don't think that's always been the case with us.

In other words the team to which a player is being "farmed" out has to have the right agri-culture.

I did not expect to see DC at 4th. Didn't feel that good at the time.

Not trying to defend DC, but I think that the perception was worse than the reality, due mainly to a relatively small number of disastrously heavy hammerings at home from the likes of Gretna, St Johnstone and Clyde.

Most of his best results were away from home where we were much more resilient and often fought back to overturn deficits. I think that I am right in saying that this happened in 4 away games in a row at Stirling, Dumbarton, Stranraer and the unforgettable Peterhead.

The stats do not really match our memories of the dreadful style of football.

Just to clarify for anyone not as old as me.Slightly misleading to refer to "The Opening of Lochburn Park" in July 1973. Lochburn was there long before that. I know because I played there for Dunard Street School in a Schools competition in the early 1950's!

Was there a young guy in a balaclava watching you?

not surprised but do think he would have been better retained in squad for rest of season.  gl at east fife james.

Agreed. I would be playing James, or at least bringing him on, ahead of some of our more experienced advanced midfielders. He can spot (and play) a pass and is an excellent finisher. I hope that he gets plenty of game time, preferably starting, for East Fife and that will give him the experience and confidence required to really challenge for a regular place at Firhill.

For those without Facebook, highlights here.  Disallowed goal from 1min 20secs in.    Truly a shocking decision.

"Shocking" is indeed the only word for it. Tried to play it back to see if the referee was unsighted. A Thistle player passes in front of him, but not sufficiently so as to obscure his vision. The Rangers player is not touched and clearly slips, and neither she nor any Rangers player makes any claim for a foul. I did not trouble to track the linespersons, but surely one or other of them should have been able to have a quiet word with the referee.

Looking forward to receiving the apology!

Not a "core" element of Partick Thistle Football Club, this team epitomise everything you would want from a Thistle team. Pride, passion, guts and no little talent. They exhibit the values of Partick Thistle right to very core of them.

An outstanding performance today, and with it our first point against one of the 'Big Three*', another significant landmark. A slight change in shape and they defended quite magnificently limiting Rangers to a mere handful of clear cut chances.

I've not seen the disallowed goal back yet, but it looked a legitimate goal to me at the time and messages from people who saw it on TV would seem to confirm my real time impressions.

If you are thinking of going to the Cup Final stop thinking about it and just get your ticket. I can't guarantee a Thistle win but I can guarantee that we have a realistic chance of doing just that. A big, noisy Thistle support would make a huge difference. The girls and coaching staff deserve that.

*The Big Three were a 60s band. Cavern regulars alongside peers The Beatles.

This is a huge step forward. Congratulations to the team, the coaching staff and all others involved in numerous roles behind the scenes.

You're probably correct and he  certainly isn't responsible for our obsession with protecting a lead very badly. We were so much in control in the first half hour it was criminal not to press home our advantage. If I'm honest our 2nd goal was so much against the run of play, I didn't feel we were secure when it was scored.

It doesn't change the fact that their 1st goal came from an absolute joke of corner. It so blatantly deflected off the Livi player it beggered belief. He is a liability of a referee, never seen him give anything other than a car crash of a performance. Think my favourite today was when  Muirhead got halfed in two right in front of him and he still didn't detect a foul.

Having said that Livi kept going when we were in cruise control, for that alone they deserved to win.

I can confirm as regards the ridiculous award of the corner as I was standing a few feet away. I did explain to Mr Walsh that he should have awarded a goal kick, but he blanked me.

I thought that Milne, Bannigan and Williams (when he came on) played well. Neilson was a Rolls Royce in the first half, but a Rover in the second.

Sounds like Penrice is out for them as he needs a minor op. Alston in for Scotty Dog, I assume BBG will be back in for Tomi but I’d stick with Tomi and see how he gets on.

Hi Jags on Tour. I hope all is well round Uig Bay. Personally I would keep Alston on the bench and bring in Stanway, with McInroy moving forward. I also hope that the slight lack of midfielders allows for some decent game time for James Lyon.

  11. Not sure if this is the right solution but I do appreciate that there is a problem which it would be helpful to address. Speaking neutrally as a fan of open attacking football it always annoys me when a player beats another player with a bit of trickery, or a player is sprung forward through an enterprising series of quick passes, a defender will often wrestle the player in possession to the ground and stifle the promising move at birth.

Occasionally that defender is the last man and is rightfully red carded. However, 90% of the time the offending player is lauded as “taking one for the team”. Indeed a player can often be criticised for not fouling an opponent early on in a move that leads to an attack. A yellow card does not really help the other team (unless it goes to make up a red). Therefore the defending side has killed the move and got away Scot free.

There is definitely a case for a more effective remedy to discourage cynical fouls. Not sure if the blue card is the best idea, but willing to give it a try.

Now that Adams has gone yes. If he had stayed until the end of the season I think Livvy might have caught them.

David Martindale agrees with you. His (Martindale’s) BBC interview was hilarious.

  13. What a strange and tawdry episode. It does Adams no credit whatsoever.

Lots of managers give their best, but it does not work out for them. Most learn from the experience, and in time bounce back and/or move on, perhaps finding their level along the way, maybe in a different sort of role.

Difficult to discern any of this in such a sad and angry cameo.
