  1. I appreciate that as well as scoring two, Tommy missed a couple of presentable chances, but for a striker to be on the pitch for such a short time and to position himself so as to be in with a strong chance of scoring four times shows good instincts and has to be commendable.

Fitzy deservedly MotM but Bannigan ran him close

I was going to say the same. Bannigan was everywhere and covered whenever needed.

I hope that the TJF MotM was put to a democratic vote of the members present and had not been covertly agreed beforehand in a darkened room.

  3. Arbroath strip reminds me of Brie and cranberry.

Referee wearing strip similar to Arbroath and certainly has been favouring them with some of his decisions!

Arbroath playing very high line. We have taken advantage once through Graham, but could and perhaps should have capitalised more often.

  4. Passed Jamie Sneddon while halfway round Victoria Park parkrun this morning (he was spectating, not running). Managed to gasp “Jamie Sneddon” and give him a thumbs up. He smiled and waved back.

Hoping this is a good omen. Was there not a goalkeeper (forget who) called “the Cat”?

Due to the inconsistency of Mcinroy and Alston at no 10 I think Lyon deserves his chance. Looked decent in the precious few opportunities he got earlier in the season.

I concur. James Lyon also knows the way to goal, as he showed in the League Cup.

  6. Having criticised Neilson for a sub-standard performance against Dundee United, it is only right that I praise him for an excellent showing today. Deserving of his man of the match award. As well as his goal, he was very unfortunate not to get an assist for the delicate chipped pass that put Graham through on the keeper.

I like the way he steps forward when space opens up, and his diagonal balls were much more accurate than on Friday.

Adeloye put in a better shift than has been his norm of late. Got involved in the game and held the ball up in the corners towards the end.

McBeth's soliloquy was very brief. I do not think he even had time to ask "Is this a dagger which I see before me?"

  7. Harry Milne had an excellent game. Sadly he was the only one to gain above pass marks. Lewis Neilson who generally has been very good was really off it tonight.

Credit also to the fans who gave strong support and seemed to drag the team back into the game especially in the second half.

That was a strange game. I think many of the comments on this thread reflect the terrible start and the deflating ending. Right from the kick off we were on the back foot and the only surprise was that we emerged from the first 20 minutes only 0-1 down. What little possession we had we handed straight back.

However, for a solid hour (approximately minutes 20-80) we were very much in the game, despite not playing particularly well. A fair head of steam was built up especially in the middle portion of the second half and there seemed to be the potential to snatch an equaliser even though we fashioned very few good chances.

Therefore a poor performance and well beaten in the end, but somehow it could almost have been so much better.

I may well be wrong with this comment but has Dundee United's stuttering run not coincided with Docherty's absence from the team? Is he out due to injury or suspension or both?

As far as tonight's game is concerned its really a must win for us.  I live in hope that we will win,  we certainly have the players who can hurt United, but we must play for 90 mins! When was the last time.within did this?

I can't say I an confident about our chances and notwithstanding our much debated need for a defensive midfielder I also think we need a strong central defender.

I am not particularly convinced  of the Sneddon, Muirhead, Neilson triangle in the centre and see Muirhead in particular as the most vulnerable. If ever anybody is missing Holt it's Muirhead!

Let's hope that Dundee Utd's lack of form and our strengths, of which there are many, can outweigh our weaknesses and we can look forward to 90+ mins of a full-on Jags performance.

    C'mon the Jags.

It’s hardly a must win as whatever happens we will be very much still in 3rd place. Of course a win would be wonderful.

Just arrived and parked near Tannadice. Passed through an area called Coldside which seems to be well named!

Imo since the inception of VAR, common sense has been binned.

Fair point. The Inverness game we are talking about was well before VAR and was a good example of the officiating team communicating and combining the respective pieces of the jig-saw which they were each holding to reach a correct and common sense solution, without need for further cameras and replays.

Going back to earlier posts, I think that we can all agree that James Craigen deserves great credit for being quick to cotton on to what was happening, and in doing so saved us from conceding a goal.

WJ presents a reasonable point that JC should have been even bolder, ignored the linesman and kicked the ball away from the corner quadrant. No doubt if he had done so he would have been booked for disrespecting the officials!

I might be mistaken, but I am sure all 3(Fitzpatrick, Tiffoney and Lawless) were starting at the end of the season. Turner would also be a cert to start.

Exactly. I agree that all 4 could start with Fitzy and Lawless wide, Tiffoney Number 10 and Turner playing deeper midfield (though of course he could also play Number 10). What I was trying to say (also agreeing with LIB's original post) is that we do already have plenty of other reasonable starting options in deeper midfield and Number 10, and therefore it is not a priority. To me the additional wide option is more of a priority as this would help us both as regards direct attacking and also assisting the defence in providing more of a counter-attacking goal threat later in the game (a department in which we are currently deficient).

Still, to go back to where I started, this is almost certainly an academic debate as neither Tiff nor Turner is likely to return on loan in January, although depending on lots of other factors, I could see either or both of them returning to Firhill in years to come.

As I understand it Tiffoney had signed a pre contract with Dundee sometime before the play offs. Turner on the other hand would've (could've) stayed had the £500K short term loan been in place a day or so earlier. As it was he turned down an offer on reduced terms after the play offs.

Much as I like both Turner and Tiffoney I feel we'd be creating an overload in the midfield/attacking positions they play in. Always assuming defensive midfield is sorted we're then going to have one regular starter benched as it is.

I suspect that this is an academic discussion. If not, while I agree that Turner would be an overload on existing options, I would tend to argue that Tiffoney would be a huge asset in giving us 3 effective attacking wide player possibilities. Currently if either Fitzy or Lawless is injured, suspended, off form or tiring during a game, there is no effective replacement (apart from a formation change or involving players like Zander Mackenzie who have slightly different qualities). Wes MacDonald should have been that person, but it looks like he has not risen to the required expectation level.

You could imagine Fitzy, Lawless and Tiff fighting for 2 of 3 places and whoever was left out, especially if it were Fitzy or Tiff, coming on after an hour and terrorising the opposition defence, and perhaps giving us a genuine attacking threat if camped in defending a lead in the latter stages. Of course the 1 out of the 3 not starting wide would also be a serious competitor for the Number 10 role (where admittedly we do have other options, but none with Tiff or Fitzy's pace).

Absolute nonsense re Turner he only joined Ross County after they survived in the premier league and because they were able to offer him 3 times what we could afford and a chance to play in the premier league.  Honestly I thought you better than to listen to tittle tattle

While Tiffoney did sign a PCA he gave his all throughout the playoffs.  Again Dundee could afford far higher wages than us

As for your lack of respect comments ? Have a word with yourself.

Seriously neither have had nothing but kind words about Partick Thistle and had respect for the club which you would expect from them. If as expected Ashford signs then it will be in no small part to Tiffoney who has been recommending us.

we didn’t even sit down and offer them new contracts on less money I might add until it was far far too late.  Though we know now that the club had no money

Shoukd we accuse Lawless, Erskine, Paton, Lindsay etc because they all left for more money.’

Who is Ashford? Am I missing a rumour somewhere? I am assuming that this is not Marcus R Ashford. He could perhaps do with a loan spell, though would not be a regular starter with Fitzy and Lawless being in good form.

I think technically the goal should have stood. The issue was that the linesman shouldn’t have waved away James C because the corner had legitimately been taken.

I hesitate to enter into contention with a Parliamentary lawyer, and fear that the whole weight of the House of Commons Library will be deployed against me! Agreed that if (a) the first Inverness player had connected with his touch, and (b) the linesman had not waved Craigen away, the goal should have stood. I cannot prove or disprove (a), but (b) definitely happened. Thus the Inverness move was fundamentally flawed from that point on and could not result in a legitimate goal. If Euan Norris had allowed the goal, one match official would have deliberately consented to Thistle being materially disadvantaged by the clear and obvious error of (and express communication of that, causing a Thistle player to amend his intended behaviour which would have prevented the goal, by) another match official. That cannot be!

  14. To all on the forum (including moderators)

In the words of the great John L (Lennon rather than Lambie):

And so happy Christmas..........for yellow and red ones.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year

Let's hope its a good one without any fear.

PS This did get me wondering, what do Thistle fans fear most in 2024?

Perhaps (in ascending order) Liquidation, administration, relegation, failing to reach the play offs, being eliminated in the play offs..........or being trapped in a lift with Derek Adams?

Not really relevant to yesterday's game, but I stumbled on this, and it reminded me or the "Cornergate" incident against ICT some years ago. Is my memory right: a perfectly good goal got chalked off in that game?

Your memory is almost right! Right game and right idea. However, it was not a perfectly good goal and it was correctly disallowed. The first Inverness player intended to do the "tiny touch" and then retreat, so that the second player could go over and take control of the ball and dribble it towards the goal.

However, the first Inverness player missed with his tiny touch. James Craigen was alive to what was happening and ran in to close down the second Inverness player. The linesman waved him back, saying that the corner kick had not been taken.

The second Inverness player still carried on with his original plan and dribbled the ball towards our goal. I cannot recall exactly what happened next. I do not think that the second Inverness player himself "scored", but his ball into the box set up a goal mouth stramash in which another Inverness player put the ball in the net.

The referee Euan Norris initially awarded the goal. The linesman put his flag up. The referee consulted with the linesman and correctly disallowed the goal.

That is my recollection, but as always I am open to correction!

  16. Watching the JagZone highlights, credit due to Jamie Sneddon for a great save in the second half, with a little help from the post.

Also realised how good was Harry Milne's header for the first goal. He was stretching off balance to get to the ball and it was amazing that he managed to generate so much power. Goals that crash into the back of the net via underside of the bar are always a little bit special.

  17. Agree that the last 20 minutes were a tense and nervy watch. Whether by misplaced passes or aimless punts, we conceded possession too easily and too often.

However, on the credit side we won a lot more of the 50/50 loose balls than we did against Raith. There were a lot of excellent tackles and blocks. The team played with much more spirit and were given superb backing by the fans. Every throw in, bye kick, free kick or regaining of possession was cheered as heartily as a goal.

  18. In days gone by I can remember St Johnstone and Ross County being very effective in managing 1-0 leads against us. Once they scored it was like game over.

I cannot say that they sat back on leads but they just killed the game so that nothing interesting happened and Thistle could never build up any head of steam or get the fans excited and engaged. This was combined with extreme time wasting, going down with injuries, collapsing whenever touched and retaining the ball at the corner flag for minutes at a time.

These are all things Thistle have never been any good at, so I think it is always better for us to play constructively just as if we were not winning.
