  1. The thing that pisses me off most about this long-term postponement is that we have lost out on playing them right at the start of the new season, when, for example, we still had a fit Higgy and they had Brown out injured and their team looked extremely shaky under a new manager. Mind you, if it's postponed long enough maybe we'll have Higgy and Welsh in our starting XI!

And they might look extremely shaky under another new manager :)

  2. When will we ever play the postponed game against Celtic ? Why couldnt the fixture have been played already ? Why not just switch the venues for the opening day of the season ? Who made the decision to postpone ? why hasnt this game been played yet ? Answers anyone ?

That would have been far too sensible, but tradition has it that the Champions always kick off with a home fixture and that had to be maintained, even if it was going to be immediately postponed due to Celtic Park being used for the Commonwealth Games. Only in Scotland !

  3. Know what ..... We will get as many dodgy penalty decisions give to us as go against us. Get over it.

Refs and linesmen are, in general, honest people who do their job as best they can. The do make mistakes as we all do and I will bet that the ref made no more than any of the Thistle players on Saturday. If there were no contentious decisions, football would be a very dull game with nothing much to talk about.

  4. For the sake of clarification, my post was in support of the management, despite the issues you allude to.

My point is that Hamilton are proving (so far) this season that the 'small budget' mantra should not be taken as a given for continually ending up in a relegation fight. It's use of that budget and how astutely the resources are managed and deployed that make the difference. Granted, a team with Thistle (or Hamilton's) budget are unlikely to win the league, but it should not be taken as a given that you have to meekly accept mediocre performances or results. As I said previously, Hamilton are already well on the way to finishing top 6 this season barring a catastrophic loss of form.

I don't think it's unreasonable to aspire to Thistle finishing top 6. However, we need to improve on shut-outs and home wins. Winning successive league games would be a step in the right direction for a start. Can we agree on that at least?

As for positive results at Tannadice, the only ones that spring to mind without the history book to hand are the 1-0 win in 94-95, and the 2-2 draw a couple of years earlier when Calum Milne scored one of his two Jags' goals. We've a truly rotten record up there.

Sorry, I misunderstood your original post and agree with what you say (other than Hamilton finishing top 6 - I think that they'll be found out soon)

  5. A well argued post, but there are two things to pick up on, if I may. Hamilton's start is probably not freakish, they've merited everything they have achieved on the field of play, including taking the champions on their own patch - whatever happens from here they will likely finish top 6 with the points they have accumulated to date. Secondly, those of us who have followed the Jags cause for longer than you (in my case for 48 years), have had the benefit of tasting a little bit more 'success' in terms of top division security. I fully believe that our current management team is capable of delivering that security, but I do fear for the football club if we go back downstairs. It is crucial that we stay up and consolidate a la St Johnstone, St Mirren and Kilmarnock.

Can I ask, in those 48 years, how often have we come away with anything from Tanadice ?

It's fair game to criticise the management after the St.Mirren and Kilmarnock games (and to an extent Hamilton, but events since have proven different) but the fact is that even if we had Mourinho as manager and Simeone as his assistant, we would still get nothing from Tanadice or Pitodrie. It is a long time since any manager kept us in the top flight for 2 seasons running and Archie is well on his way to doing just that.

True, he has made some tactical errors (what manager hasn't)

True, the squad could use more depth (what squad doesn't)

Overall, he has earned the right to a bit of slack and while we are 6 points clear of relegation can't be accused of doing badly.

  6. This is going to go very close to the end.

I think that most people expected Germany to win all of their games to give them 30 points

Poland, Scotland and Ireland to battle for second place

Georgia to beat Gibraltar but struggle in the other games

Gibraltar to be the whipping boys.

Key for Scotland qualifying was to win the home games v Poland/Ireland and 6 points from Georgia/Gibraltar. Anything for Germany would be a bonus

The target for Poland/Scotland/Ireland to be in the mix was therefore 18 points.

What has happened is that Germany have dropped 5 points from target, Scotland and Ireland gained one from last night and Poland gained 3 v Germany but dropped 2 from last night.

Assuming that everything goes as expected (home wins and Germany winning all remaining games), we will have

    Germany 25

    Poland/Scotland/Ireland 19

Margins are going to be very tight and absolutely no room for any error.

    Welcome to Firhill

    6’ 4” Defender now you’re talking Archie

All we need now is 6’ 4”, 30 goals a season man to neighbur Dools

Why does the hight matter ? If this mythical player can score 30 goals a season, I wouldn't mind if he was 4' 4"

  8. We have Ecclestone now, so I can't see us needing 3 strikers. Maybe a move in the summer depending on how things work out. Now if Barcelona were to put in a £50,000,000 bid for Dools then maybe Lyle would be a good replacement, but I just can't see us needing more than Dools and Big Ecc this season.

  9. decent 3 points I suppose considering ROI had to score a last minute winner to beat them. It was probably the most comfortable 1-0 I've seen in ages (apart from that shot they missed from 12 yards).

Poland beating Germany 2-0 now screws the group up big time, we're going to need to win every home game, take 4 points from Poland and ROI away and also beat Gibraltar and Georgia away. I can't see that happening, I think we'll be lucky to see 1 point from Poland and ROI away to be honest.

Or match Poland and beat Germany at Hampden/Ibrox/Parkhead/Murryfield or wherever the game is played.

  10. 12th September 1998. Beat Stirling Albion 1-0 at Firhill. Nothing memorable about that. The Bino's player being dragged from the field by their manager after a red card, different, but not hugely memorable. What does make this game stick in the mind is that it was the last time I saw a player who was older than me score. Tommy Bryce was the player/manager and headed in the only goal. I'm pretty sure that is a personal record that will now survive.
