  1. Agree with much of jagfox's comments above.

Perhaps if we had McBeth in from the start of the season one or two midfielder signings wouldn't have been made and James could've got more game time with us. That not being the case, the lack of overall physicality in midfield (pre Neilson/McBeth) was glaringly evident. Lyon will at least get some valuable game time out on loan. He may still not get a lot of game time as team physicality is part and parcel of League Two football but certainly more than what he'd have got with us.

Assuming next season we have a better balance in midfield than we did till recently then James could provide a creative spark to the team. He's certainly shown the potential to do that.

I'd agree with that but got a funny feeling Doolan may start with The Ghost. At least Ben has more presence and would allow Robinson to support BBG.

There will be slim pickings on the bench though.

So we need to get at them from the outset.

A game we should be winning and I feel we can if we can create and take our chances.

I'll go for a hopeful, 2 - 0 win. BBG and Robinson with the goals.

What in the wide, wide world o' sports is a goin' on here?

Although not an "official" source The Thistle Archive is the best place in the world for Thistle attendances, since we put so much effort into getting it right, way beyond what anyone else does. As with many aspects of our data collection, we've got a published policy in place for it, and we dig and dig and dig, season in, season out, across every single era, aligning with experts wherever we can. Many of our attendance figures post-war come from the official Scottish League submission, which was a mandatory requirement for clubs to make. If we can't get an exact figure, we go with the contemporary average, often from several papers.

Re the latest debacle, it's often the case that one representative from OPTA supplies data which feeds multiple stats sites (including the SPFL) and if they get it wrong, multiple sites accept the feed and also get it wrong. We see this on assists every other week. And don't get us started on Brian Graham's imaginary "hat-trick"!

Anyway, according to our policy, we accept the figure given by the home club as being definitive, and Arbroath say 2,048, so we go with that.

That's the most sensible thing to do. Maybe tho' an asterisk required for some of those league games up at Dingwall? 😀

I reckon 2 more wins will be enough for top 4. Hopefully we don't need to endure the nail-biting last regular day trauma of last season, and we can just look forward to the trauma of the play-offs instead.

If in fact 2 more wins were to suffice it could mean our games away to Raith and home to Dundee Utd become less meaningful to us but extremely meaningful to both opponents. A more likely scenario is our final game against Dundee Utd will be largely academic to us and the complete opposite to Utd. A bumper away crowd that day.

Another trivial contribution: I remember checking years ago (why? probably bored) and finding that the most common surname of all the players who have ever played for thistle is:...............................................................................

    Gibson.

    Thank you.

My money would be on "Smith"

I couldn't make the game today so sorry about that. Various ailments one of which flared up yesterday sufficiently  to restrict me to the house.

I see Doolan saying we had two goals chopped off and one effort which hit the past and may have crossed the line.

Why were the goals chopped off and are there any views on whether or not the post effort crossed the line?

I don't think the whole ball crossed the line. Robinson looked clearly offside for our second chalked off goal. The way things are these days we may have had a decent shout for a handball penalty.

    Hope your health quickly improves.

  7. Positives- 3 points & a clean sheet

Negatives- Having to drive home into the sun for 60 odd miles.

Considering the blustery conditions a good enough match. I still feel we don't see a game out that well. We start to play longer and concede possession too much. However our defending, both individually and collectively was very good today. Arbroath also defended well otherwise we'd have won more convincingly.

Horn is the lad who scored a hat-trick for the under 18s in recent 3-2 win against Ayr at Somerset...

As long as it doesn't go to his head. Don't want to hear the lad blowing his own trumpet.

    Good news about Neilson.

  9. We really need a win to get the momentum going again. I doubt I've ever left to go to Arbroath not expecting a win. But it is Gayfield and many a time I've been a lot less confident come kick off. Even tho' they're bottom of the league they've only had three home games since we last played them. Two creditable draws and a win over Raith hardly suggests it'll be a stroll in the park today.

Doolan reporting only Banzo unavailable in terms of new injuries.

Does also that mean Neilson available? If not I'd reluctantly put McBeth back into midfield. Really having Luke playing alongside Aero in defence could be the way to go on the longer run.

I've never got the hype about Spittal. As mentioned above, scores some great goals but used to go missing in so many games. Not the guy you want in your team when battling is required and not much has changed given Motherwell's showing down at Cappielow.

Whilst I agree that he wasn't the most combative player for us, I think he's more aggressive these days. Certainly he's having a good season with Motherwell, who would be really struggling without him. 7 league goals and 8 league assists this season kinda backs that up.

I've seen Loney a few times, and hopefully again tonight when the 18s play Ayr. He's definitely got a chance. There's a real physicality about him, not unlike Diack actually.

I see now that Brighton are reported also interested in Loney. Brighton are arguably the top club in Britain regarding recruitment.

Off topic, but I reckon that maybe after whisky, Walker's Shortbread must be the most widely exported Scottish product in the world. I've seen it on shop shelves in every of the many countries I've visited.

I know for a fact the empty tins themselves were exported, often at great profit. Possibly still do.

What happened to Gary Fraser? He had so much potential and played well when promoted.  Then moved down pyramid Peterhead, Broomhill, Glenafton.

I'm just guessing but his recurrent injury (knee?) may have made Gary difficult for a club to insure.

Was saying exactly this to my pal at the game today. Maybe we should be looking at the Juniors rather than loanees from the OF? You can see how much it means for McBeth to be part of the club and I would love to see more players with that kind of desire than pampered OF cast offs.

In no way do I disagree. I would tho' like to know how potentially effective our current scouting system is likely to be. Dools has mentioned it on at least a couple of occasions. Ideally I'd like to see a squad comprising of more ex academy players and others sourced out of leftfield such as the Juniors and lower leagues down south. Players brought in on loan with an option to sign, as opposed to the usual wannabees at the OF.

  16. As others have said Robinson was a deserved MotM but I thought both McBeth & Muirhead (won so many headers) ran him close. What's extra pleasing was the centreback pairing worked well. Surprised we only scored the two goals but i suppose Morton are a stuffy side.

  17. Tho' it's got that six pointer look about it I don't think tomorrow's result will prove to be too pivotal. Put another way I'd neither get that ecstatic over a win nor feel it's all over if we lose. Just want to see us fight for a result and demonstrate some proper joiney up form.

  18. 7 minutes ago, Jaggernaut said:

Got a feeling that a underwhelming draw is tomorrow's fate.

Morton are just the sort of outfit to rub salt into our wounds. I'd be tempted to take a draw.

Changing my tune somewhat. I'd be happy now if we stumbled into the play offs and found ourselves with a fit squad that went on to play to their true potential. And, yes, I'm being optimistic with "true potential".

4 tactics…..we have been averaging 1.5 goals a game all season but doolan only changed personnel and formation in February

Not sure if this is addressing your point but Doolan tried to get a defensive midfielder during the closed season but couldn't. He dropped back more advanced mids to play alongside Bannigan (in effect to replace Docherty). That as we know never worked out. Even so he still had to persist as he couldn't play Banzo as a ball winning midfielder. In turn that more or less dictated our formation. A line up that depended heavily on Lawless & Fitzpatrick in wide position.

One option he had was to play Neilson as the defensive mid. Doolan said moving Neilson out of defence wasn't ideal as he was competent at centreback. I'm speculating here but I think bringing in McGinley (a left centreback) may have been primarily to explore the option of moving Neilson forward. Perhaps an interim measure till we signed O'Reilly.

I imagine most would agree that the two positions we had to fill in January were defensive mid and left sided centreback. In effect McBeth & O'Reilly have now replaced Docherty & Holt. A third position we haven't filled is a back up for Wee Stevie and Fitz. We had of course a poor signing in McDonald for that very purpose. So not having wide cover means either a forced change of formation or playing one of our multitude of spare midfielders out of position.

None of the above is meant as defence of Doolan's management. Just pointing out a few factors. Some mitigating.

  20. Rare game when we don't score. Thought just about everyone played poorly tonight. Don't know whether to make an exception for McBeth as he played for over an hour carrying a yellow. Thought he might have been hooked at half time.

Looked a poor goal to lose even tho' we know how effective Turner can be. But it was at the other end of the pitch where we were more culpable. The starting formation was looking promising but was rightfully changed after Raith scored and sat back. Thereafter we were both lacklustre and too predictable going forward.

Can't honestly say I'm too confident about Saturday.
