  1. Very sorry to hear this news. Condolences to Kris,  family and friends.  I am sure there will be many in the football and beyond who like all Jags fans are feeling for Kris at this time.

    A real gentleman.

Haha, that's true, but what a day! After it I phoned my partner and then my father, and they both told me that I was gibbering like a monkey!

Another time I got a similar reaction (i.e. reference to our simian cousins) was after the SC win at Dundee, with Britton and Gibson scoring. My partner, who had waited patiently in the car near Dens Park until the game was over, finally told me to shut it, at around Auchterarder.

Ha ha. My wife's eyes just glaze over and I know it's time to shut up or change the subject.

  3. Given the absurdity of the SPL  play-off system which is designed to benefit the SPL team who finish in 11th place (excepting PTFC) I don't think either team would want extra time and penalties.

The system in England and in our lower leagues is much fairer.

  4. I expect tonight will be a very tight game and that any result is possible, even a QP win!

To win I think we have to get in about them from the first whistle to the final whistle.

The QP players will be up for this and will remember the 4-0 ,hammering they got on their last visit. I hope I am wrong but I wouldn't be surprised if our guys are on the end of a few hefty tackles. If so our players need to stay calm and disciplined in the face of any such provocation.

A fair and strong referee is required

    3-1 the jags

  5. A few points.

    1. I think most members of the WAT know that I am an IMC supporter but Doolan is now the manager and that's it as far as I am concerned. It would not be a good or comfortable situation brining IMC back. There must be other people out there who have a good eye for a player so let's get one of them if this is the way the club chooses to go.

    2. Will there be a Partick Thistle FC next season or will we have gone the way of Third Lanark?

    3. I acknowledge I have not been to many games this season due to my inability to sit in a bus or car for 3 hours. However I keep reading the same thing from those who have been attending games  I.e. "we should have been out of sight" but we rarely are. I think if we still exist next season we need a prolific goalscorer or at least a player that we can coach into being one. We should scout the lower leagues and try to find a player with an eye for goaL (not Goodwillie)

    4. Doolan has to address the quite distinct differences in form not just between games but also between first and second half in the same game. In other words make us more consistent.

    And finally,

    5. We need to break up the Docherty and Bannigan midfield partnership. Get Turner playing more centrally (Doolan seems to be doing this), also find a couple of more physically strong midfield ball winners, one of them with a little creativity would be good as well. I am happy to find a place for Docherty but next season we need a midfield that can dominate and control games.

Two wins from our last two perfectly winnable  games and  the 61 points we would have achieved would have won us  second place !

What a missed opportunity , frustrating!

  6. Tonight's result means a change to the master plan to Plan B.

I hate to say it but I would now prefer Morton to either draw with or beat Queens Park. Also Dundee to beat them in their final league game. That would leave Queens on 58 or 59 points.

While this is going on we defeat both Arbroath and Raith to also finish on 59 points to finish 2nd on goal difference.  We then subsequently  promotion via the play offs.

And yes, the two goals, particularly the second goal which was clearly onside, disallowed by last weekends referee and assistant referee have proved to be significant in terms of taking us out of contention for the title.

If Cove lose tonight then Arbroath will effectively be safe (vastly superior goal difference) - which might mean they play a bit more freely tomorrow- which isn’t necessarily a good thing……..

Didn't Cove win away to Arbroath last week and wasn't this a game where Arbroath were strong favourites?

I appreciate Cove beating Dundee at Dens Park is a completely different proposition form beating Arbroath at Gayfield but that's would be my preference.

I would then prefer Queens Park to win their last two games against Morton and  Dundee to gain automatic promotion. Of course I want the Jags to win against Arbroath and Raith  (4-0 & 3-0) which would be enough to achieve 2nd place on goal difference. We of course win promotion through the play-offs.

Queens would have 64 pts          Partick Thistle 59 pts                    Dundee 59pts.

12 mins played at Dens and still 0-0! Cove have a chance only 78 mins to go! Plenty time to sneak a goal!

  8. I have been watching the Jags for over 60 years and I am still waiting on decisions to balance up.

The idea that decisions balance up over time is a myth. I am not saying we don't get the occasional decision  of course we do, but over the timescale I have been watching/supporting the Jags we are definitely in deficit so much so that we will never be in balance.

You did, but they have just lost 3 in a row and 4 without a win, so they are not on good form

I know they have not got the results but that doesn't mean they haven't been playing well. In their most recent game they gave ICT a tough game which ICT won in the last few minutes and they are the 'form' team in the division.

No one will be happier than me if we win this 5-0 but I think we will find this a tough game.

Surely a chance for Fitzpatrick to shine as the pacy option from the start

    I agree with this.

I think though we have to put the ball in front of Fitzpatrick to run onto. He was very effective against Queens when he came on doing just this.. He doesn't seen to be interested in taking the ball up to a defender, passing him and crossing!

Regarding other games I am hoping for an ICT win over Dunee and would be happy if at close of business tomorrow the table looked like this:

    Dundee            34 - 58

    Queens  Park  34 - 58

    Inverness CT   35 - 57

    The Jags          34 - 55.

if results go our way we can win the title from the above position tied on 61 pts. with Dundee and Queens but with the better goal  difference.

    How is that for optimism?

Hopefully we will be well rested after last week's game, relaxed and raring to go. Hamilton are in very good form so we will have to start on the front foot and stay on the front foot. It's going to be a difficult game and I will settle for a scrappy win!

On our day we are by far the best team in the league. Priority now has to be securing playoff spot, ideally 2nd, but regardless, we need to be in the mix. Do that & we have a chance.

    Totally agree with this.

To digress slightly I have been thinking that perhaps some  of the differences Doolan has made, and I mean for the better, has been playing his version of Total Football and the impact of his substitutions.

His comments after the Queens game "we attack as a team and we defend as a team" was seen in the form of Tiffoney harassing the fullback, Holt scoring two goals from within 8 yds of the goaline, Mcmillan crossing from a a few yds from the bye line for our midfielder to score from 2 yds out. At the other end of the park we have we have had our all of our attacking and defensive midfielders winning or helping to regain the ball before the opposition can reach our 18 yd line.

I think Doolan has done well getting the players to buy into this method of play. However to be effective i suspect players need to be a lot fitter than needed to simply play in defined roles such as striker, midfielder or defender. I am sure our pre-season training this coming summer will reflect this.

With regard to substitutions I have been very impressed with the commitment, attitude and effectiveness of our subs and especially Mullan and Fitzpstrick. The formers goals speak for themselves and when he came on against Queens Fitzpatrick was a vonstant threat down the left hand side and clearly had the fullback and the big central defender on toast!

I am disappointed that yesterday he appeared to revert to type, that is  disinterested and lacking commitment and attitude. If that is how Fitzpatrick is going to play then he will have no future St Firhill under Doolan.

Finally perhaps the 10th game of Total football just caught up with the players in terms of fitness. Just a thought.

Thought we looked rather leggy from the off. Wonder if a few were playing with knocks?

if we had got a second goal I could see the sense in ceding possession and getting behind the ball but to do that with a single goal lead was asking for trouble. Brownlie's error wasn't a one off. Three other players had given the ball away cheaply just before.  Against QP we didn't miss Milne but today we lacked playing with width for much of the game, which didn't make keeping possession any easier.

btw could Morton dropping 2 pts today turn out to be a plus for us?

Thanks LIB for raising the 'leggy' issue.

I can't travel to games at the moment due to some not serious but nuisance value heath issues.

I wondered if the players were nervous, trying too hard to the point of not being relaxed or perhaps felt under pressure to perform in front of a 4k+ crowd.

I have seen this happen a number of times over the years when the team have frozen in front of a good crowd when expected to do well!

    Just a thought!.

Not entering into the McCall/Doolan debate, but having reviewed my performance I have now resigned as match thread starter. Hopefully somebody else can do a better job next week.

Don't be too hard on yourself PTD. Two out of three isn't that bad. If I were you I'd give myself another vhance and open the thread for the next game.

Oh, and there should be no McCall-Doolan debate. That's old history now. We are all Jags fans.

  14. Letting my head rule my heart there is no doubt that as WoodstockJag has said the title is Dundee's to lose.

I also agree with those posters who have said we can only focus on our own games.

I have thought for the past few weeks that we need to win our last 5/6 games. We have got off to a good start against Cove and Queens Park, 2 wins, , 6 points and a goal difference of 9-0.

Of the top 6 teams I think that when we beat Ayr at home on Saturday we have, on paper, the easiest run in!

We play Hamilton, Arbroath and Raith who are 9, 8 and 7 in the table. There is no reason why we can't win these games and finish with 63 points.

We are playing with confidence and have the momentum.. I recognise 63 points may not be enough but we have to give go for it!

The two things we must do are beat Ayr on Saturday and for the remaining games forget we are Partick Thistle and for a short time at least be predictable and win games we are expected to win.

    No jinx at all, AJ.

Kevin Holt last night was instructive, constructive and destructive, and definitely indestructible.

    Always believing!

Love this post. Results today  certainly went our way and made last night's terrific  result even better.

Doolans post match comments about training to play quick one pass movements in the final third and defending starting with the front 3 were very interesting. I have never seen Tiffoney doing so much back tracking,  harassing the defender and winning or contributing to winning the ball back. He was immense! A brilliant team performance.

Still hurts about McCall does it? Your lot were in denial right up to his sacking. He should have gone earlier. He probably cost us automatic promotion.

No it doesn't 'hurt' at all. That's because I have moved on from what I consider was a period that did not reflect well on the club I have supported for over 60 years.

I said some time ago that I would not be commenting on the Ian McCall scenario again. However I will not be slated by gloating, single mined folk for having an opinion with which they (whoever they are) disagree.

So my final comment to you will be I fully support Kris Doolan and the team and I would like to wish you every success in your attempts to move on.

There is no 'you/your lot'! We are all Jags fans but with different opinions which in a democracy should be respected.

    Cheers.

The Doolan doubters, the McCall lovers are very quiet this morning.

As a McCall 'lover'  I disagree with your comment. I have already commented on last night's performance in glowing terms. Scroll back and you will find my post.

I think the point is that all McCall lovers still feel the same about his dismissal and the manner in which it was carried out. However as Jags fans, first and foremost,  they have accepted the reality of the situation and are now supporting Kris Doolan and the team.

It's time you did the same and moved on from the McCall episode instead of repeatedly having a go at fans who didn't share your opinion. In other words, grow up!

  18. Brilliant second half. The first two goals were excellent, the third a brilliant finish and the fourth was sheer determination.

We totally dominated the second half and demolished a good team. That's two bogy teams hammered in successive weeks.

Great to be a Jag tonight. .a big well done to the fans at the game, all the players, kris Doolsn and his coaching team and everybody at Partick Thistle FC.

Phew  I must make myself a cup of tea to calm down.

  19. I don't think we can take too much from the Cove game. I recognise that we played some good stuff and I was especially impressed with our running off the ball. However I thought this Cove team were the poorest I have seen since we first met them in League 1.

The result was certainly a confidence booster but I think Queens will ask a lot more questions of our midfield and defence. I do agree though that if we get at them from the off,  stay on the front foot and show belief that we can win the game then we have a chance.

When the Jags play well I believe we can beat any team in this league however we will have to be firing on all cylinders to win this game. Pity we won't have Milne marauding down the left.
