I still think he's under-rated by Jags support.

By some sections probably. There's been a few on here having a go at the number of chances he's missed after some games. For me rule of thumb is do you want a player playing for you or against you. Id definitelyrather have him in the team. I can't imagine too many defenders look forward to facing him!

All true. Also for the integrity of our league there has to be significant advantage given to the team finishing second over the teams in the third and fourth places. Clearly there's not enough prize money in the kitty to do it on a purely monetary basis hence the additional games.

Besides coming fourth in a tiny league of ten means that team is often likely to be only marginally above being classed as mid table. It shouldn't then be made any easier for that club to "get lucky".  Anyway I'd much prefer it if we had larger normal sized leagues. Two up, two down automatically and play offs to decide if a third club could progress or not.

Far too sensible an idea to ever be adopted in Scotland. For me the best set up would be 2 leagues of 16 with 2 up 2 down & a playoff between 3rd top/3rd bottom. Below 'league 2' regionalise the leagues (as they do below the National League in England).  It makes no sense to me that Cove travel to Annan or Elgin City travel to Stranraer (and vice verca). There are enough teams in the central belt who can move between leagues if necessary. It's working in England and elsewhere in Europe regional leagues operate below the top divisions.

Teams in the top league will complain about losing fixtures but what they really want is the ugly sisters at home twice a season for the extra gate and TV money.

Hopefully not too early with match thread 🙄.

Back on our travels.  A lot of folk debating final play off position but a loss here and suddenly 5th not too far away.  On brighter note though a win should put us in solid top 4 position.  Couple of narrow home defeats for Ayr in last 2 to the pair above us so will be a difficult game although hopefully I am right in thinking Dowds won’t play for them.  Can’t see our defence keeping a clean sheet so hope we have our shooting boots on.  Honestly can’t fathom a prediction as could be 4-4.  :fan:

Dowds won't be playing (thankfully). Loanees can't play against their parent club.

We No Longer have Community Teams as part of Thistle Weir - this was stopped a while ago - Players are recruited from all over based on ability - the Community link argument holds no water

As for “ Cheaper” First Team players - most Managers would prefer the Youth Academy Budget in there Player Budget - but Fans are obsessed with the Grow your own Players Myth

As if said a proper cost benefit analysis should be done and actually see what we get for our money

Currently PTFC cannot afford a Youth Academy

Not sure what you mean by the 'grow your own players myth'. Care to elaborate?

To be fair, is there much more in that than JJ has already had his say about ? Apart from the football update. On that, I understand Doolan wanting to protect our assets. However, what I am not so sure about is the emphasis on the Academy players. What are the benefits of doing that ? Are they cheaper. Is it less work. Is there something else ? This isn’t a dig at the players from the academy we have, I am genuinely curious.

I see the benefits of academy players as basically twofold. Bringing 2 or 3 players through each season reduces the need to sign players. It also gives us assets to sell on. We can argue how successful or not we are doing that but it also shows potential recruits that (1) there's a track record of academy graduates making it to the 1st team and (2) that leads to them being in the 'shop window' which can lead to moves to bigger clubs.

All this needs to be set against the cost of running the academy but that's a separate debate!

Totally agree with this. We should go with 2 up front and force RC to keep 3 defenders back.

Do we know who will be refereeing the game?

If its Nick Walsh I wouldn't even bother travelling.

Here's hoping that on this occasion we have an 'honest' game of football.

Ref is David Dickinson.... can't think he can be any  worse than Walsh and at least its not Collum.

Someone keep me right here but if I've understood this gibberish, (ignoring the VAT for the moment) for every £100 in receipts in ticket/gate receipts...

Take in £100.  £15 goes to club immediately. Leaves £85.  £42.50 goes to SPFL. Club retains remaining £42.50. Total club income from the match therefore £57.50. Is that correct?

In one sense a home play-off match is no different to a league match. The away team does not share the "gate". The SPFL do not  get a cut. (Do they? ) If so, then the obvious question is why the SPFL get their mitts on £42.50 of every £100 generated. Who voted for that nonsense?

Those new blazers for Maxwell and his pals don't pay for themselves you know

We could also have 10 minute sin bins for cynical fouls and dissent and only team captains allowed to talk to refs.

I'd go further and make a yellow card 10 mins in the sin bin 2nd one would be a red like in rugby. Players would think twice about risking stupid bookings for kicking the ball away or dissent.
