So no one else is concerned that this could result in a ten team SPL next season, and no promotion for Jags? Should I just shut up?
-
Graham spiers just raised prospect of 10-10 SPL.... They couldn't do it to us, could they?
Quoting myself here. But I'm seriously concerned. If SPL 2 was rushed through they wouldn't expand the to league and could easily reduce it. Dundee down already, so only the second bottom club would stand to lose out. With the rest of the lower split taken up by the bigger clubs we'd have no chance of being voted in.
Please tell me I'm being paranoid!

My mum and Fred Goodwin's mum are friends. I used to hear stories about how successful he was. Not so much now.

What's actually the situation with compensation? Was it part of the new contract? And is it McNamara, rather than Dundee Utd, who are liable? And do any of us (honestly) know if he has a case? Have Thistle received anything to date?

This is one of the reasons why joint management doesn't work. The buck has to stop with one man.
The man who appointed joint managers?

From wiki...
In the summer of 2007, Campbell was appointed manager of just-relegated Ross County, with the proviso that he would have only one chance at earning the club promotion, and would be sacked if he was unsuccessful. Ultimately, Campbell was not even given a full season in charge, and despite leading the club to the top of Division Two he was sacked on 2 October, allegedly for playing overly defensive football.
You have to respect Ross county for this

Enough of this! These are happy times, we are happy people and we don't need negative topics to discuss. Lets change the topic to: Which former Thistle manager had the nicest smile? I've been drinking wine.
This isn't a negative topic. This is an Archie love in!

As previously mentioned, the "middle 8" idea appears to have been designed especially to prevent relegation ever happening to any of the so-called "top" clubs. These clubs will have budgeted for an entire season with SPL 1-standard players, and they'll still have that squad of players in order to compete against the 4 of the top of the second 12 teams, whose squads will probably be smaller and have less depth. You would have to expect that the 4 SPL teams would prevail in the long run over the 4 teams from the 2nd tier (although in one-off cup games the "minnows" might cause an "upset"). So in theory there could be NO relegation from the top flight for years on end. I actually think it's a ludicrous proposal, and will hate it if it gets voted through.
This is a good point. Dundee have probably shown that a close season of preparation is required to bridge the gap.

Sandy clark's a decent shout. His record that season measured against Lambie's in the same season (before and after Clark) shows that he managed to lose badly with a decent team. It actually puts Archie's achievements into some perspective, and highlights how, though McNamara must be given some credit, it is ridiculous to suggest that it was he who won the league for us.

Ibrox? ..... Oh no, wait a minute

I think I remember it happening at Kilbowie. Davie Elliott scored, I reckon.

Agreed, some player, and we'll miss him.
But if he turns up for another team next season trying his best to beat us and even relegate us, then I'm afraid if booing is necessary to unsettle him, then it has to be done. He will be the enemy.
Yeah. Booing's just part of the game. I hope he wouldn't take it personally, because underneath it all we'd still love him really.

I find the whole idea of the 8 8 8 split absolutely mental. The first 22 games will be almost pointless. I doubt I'd buy a season ticket next year.
I don't get this attitude. It seems to be Ross County's concern. But do you buy a season ticket to watch Thistle or to watch the opposition? Personally I don't care who we're playing, but I'd be far more excited at the prospect of a crucial game like we had on Wedneday against Morton than a meaningless one against Aberdeen. Isn't buying a season ticket always a risk? You never know what you're going to get for your money.
The 12-12-18 thing is an absolute joke, it sounds rubbish, starting again on 0 points in the middle tier means that if you know you are going to be in it with 5 or 6 games left of the first bit of the season you are playing end of season meaningless games in the middle of the actual season.
This seems very easily solved by awarding points for finishing places after 22 games. So, for example, 1st Divsions teams are awarded 6 points for 1st, 4 points for 2nd, 2 points for 3rd and 0 points for 4th. Do similar with the teams at the foot of the Premier. This means there's always something to play for, but everyone starts the 8 team league with a chance of finishing top half. This seems a no brainer and if it's not part of the proposals then I have no idea why.

After yesterday's result it's worked out great for the club. Bumper crowd on Tuesday, hopefully to see us win it, and another on 27th, hopefully to see us lift it. Added to the bumper crowd for the Morton crunch game. Couldn't have been planned better. Oh aye, and there was a big crowd for that diddy cup game we were involved in last week too.

Holding on for a draw at Cappillow in February with ten men. I think that was huge and if we'd lost that game from two up it could have been devastating. Probably as a result of reasons 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 8 again, 9 again, 10, 12 and 14 of your original post.

I've generally been for it, and everything that goes with it. However, with St Mirren and Ross County looking most likely to oppose it, I'm wondering... It could be argued that (assuming we're promoted) we have more in common with these clubs than the rest of the SPL. "Smaller" clubs on relatively low debt levels. Therefore, if it's not good for them then maybe it's not good for us?

As I doubt anyone will be able to disprove it, I'm claiming that the Jags are on the verge of a new world record. I doubt if a team in senior football has ever won its league while not winning an away game for a full 5 and a half months (without a winter break). Thistle went from Sept 15th (Livingstone) to March 2nd (Dunfermline) without an away win. Key to acheiving this, if anyone else would like to try to break this record is:
- Win virtually every home game all season
- Win virtually every away game outwith this period
- Draw most of your away games within the period
- Have as many away games as possible within the period postponed or abandonned so you can play them outwith the period
- Punt your manager who couldn't win an away game for toffee (or better still, have another team poach him, and maybe get compensation, if he has any decency).
Right, who wants to challenge my claim?

Like the POTS award, the whole team should have a hand on the trophy when its raised!
I'd be very disappointed if a proper POTY was not chosen. Big season with lots of big players, they win the title, the trophy, the medals as a team. That's the major prize. POTY is a bonus for an outstanding individual contribution, of which there have been many. I'd vote for Erskine but Bannigan, Paton, Muirhead and Balatoni would all be worth a shout. And the rest of them would have walked it any other season. What a team!

Prediction on crowd? Anyone there last Wednesday must want to go back this week surely? Plus a few others. ( maybe some of the morton fans won't fancy it)
-
I LOVE how there was no celebration from the players. They all just turned and ran towards our half so they could get on with winning it.
Says it all about their belief and team ethic this season.
Exactly my thoughts. Brilliant attitude from this team

Three days behind most on this forum, but now willing to believe we've done it! Just wondered, who do you think will lift the trophy? Paul Paton if he gets back in the team... But Paul Paton regardless? Or will it be captain on the day? Could be SOJ or Erskine? Or Archie? Doubt it. Will be an iconic picture whoever it is. (Hope I've not jinxed it)
-
He's my player of the year. Outstanding individual in a fantastic team. I love them all. If he goes he goes, fair enough. Wouldn't change what I think of him. He's a legend. (But Archie's a god)

Yes. And so is Elliott
And so is Craigen? I've always loved English footballers!
