I reckon a more likely approach won't be to rest key players as such. More likely to prioritise those with niggling injuries etc. Players who would/could play if the outcome of the game was crucial but to the detriment of following matches.

Last season's play offs were exceptional, but it's extremely difficult for a 3rd or 4th placed club to get promoted. Almost impossible without a workable squad. Put simply County or St Johnstone will most probably be able to call on all five subs, all of whom are regular 1st team players. Somehow to offer up a reasonable challenge we'd have to be able to come close to matching them.

These teams are like leeches living and surviving off the (relative) fat of the SPL.  Fresh blood is so badly needed but the same old garbage lurks at the SPL basement every year. With their bloated budgets and the protection of playing only 2 games, it’s tough for us or Airdrie or even Raith to progress after a long season.

I admire Dundee, Killie and St Mirren for reaching the top 6 after being in our league relatively recently. It should be 2 down. Playoffs between 2nd and wherever Thistle finish!

Hitting on partly why Doolan doesn't change things about that much. If any of the three came on as subs (especially the wide two) it would also entail a forced change of formation.

I don't think there's necessarily no depth to the squad, relative to other clubs in the division. Where we are lacking is in like for like replacements down the flanks. Apart from having no one to cover (do a similar job) for Lawless and/or Fitzpatrick those two are weakened if Milne or McMillan don't play. Over the piece our strength has been in our width but that also exposes a weakness of having had to rely on those four players.

Encouragingly tho' we're seeing signs improvement thru the middle mainly down to having plugged the defensive gap somewhat and thus allowing Robinson in particular to get further forward.

There’s been a huge change in dynamics which was badly required as we were all over the place defensively. It was entertaining but the Ayr game ended that style of play. We were clearly the more talented team but we lost 4 goals to a poor side.

I give Doolan some credit although the rearrangement has raised new problems. Neilson looks out of place. Jack and Harry appear more reticent to bomb forward. The wingers are missing their support.

If Robinson or Graham get injured we’re in trouble because they’ve both excelled since the changes. Perhaps this will eventually remove some pressure from Fitzy who doesn’t need to do it all himself. But he needs to lose weight and get fitter in body and mind.  And maybe even enjoy himself.

  3. Macbeth was man of the match by a mile. He won everything in the air, every tackle and looked for a pass. Muirhead, Milne and Mitchell were good.

Couldn’t believe the Stanway substitution, he was playing well at that stage.

Milne as usual put in 100% but his left wing partner was an absolute disgrace. His attitude and effort was pathetic. Milne should kick his arse all the way to Dunfermline. He’s a fabulous talent and a match winner but the team can’t afford a non trier.

Perhaps BBG could use some ‘gentle’ persuasion.

Haven't had the chance to read the full match thread from Tuesday, but can imagine it didn't make pretty reading.

Watched the game on TV and felt we played well and were very unlucky not to win.

Similar performances to the end of the season will see us in the play-offs no doubt.

After Tuesday, I think we'd take Raith over two legs. They've been riding their luck all season and won't keep it up.

Us to beat Ross County in the play-off final. We owe them one after all.

The problem is that, despite playing well at times, we can’t buy a win.

Morton are not a good team but they fight harder. We should win comfortably but do we have the balls?

  5. I have detested Dundee United for years. We should actually respect this mob for European success and consistently beating the Uglies.

However since then they have become a nasty, greedy, needy, negative, non footballing bunch of thugs. Docherty fits in well with Gallagher, Moult, Watt, Sibbald. They were constantly in the face of a weak kneed ref. (I’m sure I lip read the ref’s discussion with Fitz at the end. Fitz’ It came off their defender’ Ref ‘Yes I know’!).

Moult in particular is the epitome of a player well past his peak who relies on the dark arts. He fouled Williams constantly throughout and abused the ref several times. He should have been off.

Williams had an excellent match but he’s far too nice. He could learn from some grizzled CB’s that he needs to give opponents the fear. I’d rather see a snarl than a smile. Gallagher is just a thug but I wouldn’t fancy playing against him. Moult should have been sorted!

  6. I agree with most of what’s been said. Defence and officials cost us the game.

I don’t think Lawless played very well but to replace him with Robinson destroyed the shape completely. Felt sorry for striker Diack playing on the wing. Come on Kris, that was just daft.

    Robinson should have replaced McInroy.

I was thinking that as well. He was playing every week for Raith Rovers, didn't think he would sign for us just to sit on the bench every week.

It’s not as if the defence has been water tight.

Sounded like McBeth had a good game when he came on.

Yes, he looks like exactly what we need. Early days yet but he’s big, powerful and keen to distribute.

Stanway was excellent and must start. But McInroy and Alston do not offer enough. Not sure about Robinson. He should have easily set up Adeloye.

All in all not a bad point on the plastic against ‘enthusiastic’ opponents. The number fouled Lawless a hundred times without getting booked or even penalised.

Can’t believe he’s not getting a game for rank rotten Saints.

I don't disagree with your suggestions, but making quite a few changes would be very un-Doolan-like.

He appears to strongly value consistency in team selection and thinks it makes it easier for players to know their roles as mentioned in various Jagzone interviews. He doesn't seem to drop players because of their form, at all - only for injury (including senior players returning from injury or to stop square pegs in round holes such as Wasiri filling in at LB).

Personally I think sticking with a losing team a la the side that lost to Dundee United is a mistake, and sends out a very poor message, but the team did win the following fixture (albeit scrappily at times), so go figure...

I'd really like to see McBeth, O'Reilly and Robinson starting, and a good bit of game time for James Lyon. Alston, McInroy and Muirhead could all do with being benched imo. Not averse to rotating the srikers too. But as I said, I don't expect it.

(PS doesn't all this belong in a RC match thread, or do we all have the fear?)

We can whisper and fear and moan about having to return there after our disaster.

Or Dools  can use this as a motivator, get the boys right up for it and fire right into them with the beautiful football of which we are capable. Take back some of what they took from us.  Hopefully we’ll have a fair ref this time and no var.

We definitely miss Docherty so a CDM is a must. Not keen on the idea of Neilson playing as CDM as whilst he's a good player and strong tackler he's not the organiser or leader we need in front of the defence.

Chic Charnley was at the hospitality on Saturday and he reckoned Turner was our best player and the one he would have kept. As Turner can pretty much play anywhere in midfield perhaps he might be more of a leader in midfield and the most able to fill Docherty's shoes?

The other thing we miss is pace. Last season when we had Tiffoney and Fitzpatrick on the park in the playoffs we had pace that scared most teams supplemented with guile in Lawless.

If Tiffoney was available I would have him back in a heartbeat. If he's not available we need to try and find another quick winger/forward as McDonald clearly is not the answer.

When Doolan moved Tiff to number 10 it was a stroke of genius. It transformed our play and he was brilliant.

Good on him if he’s getting twice as much as we could afford. He was fabulous for us. I wish him success. I also despise PCA’s but Tiff played his heart out. Turner was also superb and played brilliantly towards season end.

Im sure Dools could accommodate either or both as their current clubs are hardly using their talents.

Backline defence was fine today. Yet again the midfield lack any dig, but we already knew that. With conditions the way they were I didn't like seeing us give away so many corners. Thought it only a matter of time till we would get caught out. Even tho' we rode our luck I thought we still deserved a point. Fitzpatrick's low cross late on was maybe too good. Fair fizzed across the goalmouth.

Suspect Graham would have been where our striker(s) should have been.

The Legand Blows states (extract): "Happy he's staying but gonna be a tighter budget and tougher season in 24/25"

Why would our budget be tighter next season? I thought the financial position of the club had improved with new investment, 3000+ season ticket holders and ongoing efforts to bring in further new/increased investment.

The above might not put us into the DUFC or RRFC 'league' but should it mean a reduced budget?

As far as McMillan and Milne are concerned  if any club attempts to buy either

It will be on last seasons form. This season, due mainly to injuries, they have made a minimal contribution to the team.

I can see Both Raith and the Arabs going up so we will be joined in the Championship by two from Livingston, Motherwell, Ross County or St Johnstone. On what I have seen so far I don't think any of these sides are significantly better than Raith or the Arabs.

In conclusion I see next seasons Championship being just as difficult as this season but not more difficult. To be promoted we need to win 4/5 games more than the current two leaders and lose or draw fewer games than them as well. A tall order I would suggest.

I’m not going if there’s var. it’s killing the game.

Thank God we don’t have it.

The abolition of replays is a bloody disgrace. We have the misfortune to have been drawn against a team close to the Arctic circle in mid January.

We should at least have the opportunity to bring them back here for a replay.

I think it depends if it is on TV. If it is on tv VAR will be in operation if not i think the clubs can decide. Iirc Livingston against ICT last season did not have VAR because of the cost.

I’m not going if there’s var. it’s killing the game.

Thank God we don’t have it.

    I’m boycotting!
