Don't get the clamour for Ngwenya. He was better than Zander against Arbroath but we had to play 3 at the back to accommodate him.

Against Ayr Ngwenya was poor and we were lucky Ayr had no striker worth the name.

So to my mind a back 4 of McMilland-Muirhead-Neilson-Milne is the best we have and isn't the part of the team that needs fixed. Equally Lawless, Graham and Fitzpatrick are the best we have and not the problem.

The problem is the midfield 3. We can't start Stanway and Bannigan again.Personally I would have Williamson and McInroy with Robinson the attacking midfielder.

However it will be yet Bannigan plus 2 and we will again wonder why our midfield isn't much use.

So why do you think bannigan is a certain pick? Would any manager really pick a player based on history.....? Quite a gamble

  2. Here's a mad idea. Trust doolan to pick the right team. We can all pontificate ans speculate , but he's probably got a better idea that my esteemed forum contributors. FTR I personally think a few changes welcome. We shall see.

The warning signs were already flashing… outplayed and outbossed in midfield by Ayr until we scored our second, scoring our third against QP (at 2.1)completely against the run of play when our midfield was again being overwhelmed, QP had also just hit the woodwork. Then coming up against a hugely experienced and cunning manager on Saturday who will have seen us play against Ayr and probably couldn’t believe his luck when he heard he was playing the same team.

I’m sure Doolan will learn but he doesn’t have many options middle to back with the squad he has assembled. Milne’s form has dropped significantly, Williams seems frequently unavailable due to personal issues (but Doolan was well aware of the subsequent risk in signing him), Zander can’t cover RB (which was obvious weeks ago), Ngwena is kind off unknown despite playing many games for a couple of championship sides - was caught out a few times against Ayr and again on Saturday being too far forward), and as we all know we have a plethora of midfielders but none yet it seems a decent defensive one which is a BIG problem and the main reason we haven’t kept a clean sheet - except ironically against Ayr because they were poor in front of goal and Sneddon put in a good performance.

Fitzy jogging back is another unresolved issue. He’s nowhere near the hard worker that Lawless is and the one that Tiffoney became.
So a lot for Doolan to resolve and that will be a test of his coaching ability, but I can’t see how this is completely fixable before the January window.

Before somebody accuses me of wanting him out that is not the case. Even a defeat on Saturday which (if we played like we did on Saturday) would be his equivalent of McCalls Cove/Hamilton debacle,  he clearly still deserves more time in the role but he’s going to have to learn fast. I also accept he’s working on a smaller budget than his predecessor had last season but these are the cards he’s been dealt.

Arbroath are miles better than Cove or Hamilton, as I suspect Dunfermline will be, so not exactly a comparison....nevertheless hopefully we up our game on Saturday

    Re-watched the goals.

First goal, I have no idea what MacKenzie is trying to do. However even after losing the ball there the goal is preventable. When it moves out to the other wing Stanway doesn't put any pressure on the cross but perhaps worst of all Bannigan is meant to pick up the Arbroath goalscorer but he turns his back and goes with an Abroath player that Neilson is able to deal with. On top of that Arbroath have another 2 players free at the edge of the 18 yard box. Only Muirhead and Neilson have picked up an Arbroath player and done their jobs.

Second goal. Its a reasonable defensive header from Milne but Fitzpatrick doesn't get in front of his man and Arbroath player has all the time he needs to execute the shot. We have conceded that type of goal too many times this year. Also worth noting that when the cross goes in Muirhead, MacKenzie and Milne are all in decent postions to deal with the cross or with the 2 Arbroath players in the vicinity. However Bannigan gets sucked in rather than passing his runner on and staying at the edge of the box to be in a position to get to Milne's header first.

The 3rd goal on face value looks like a breakaway and in part caused by our switch to 3 at the back to try and chase the game. However 2 things annoy me. First of all Bannigan goes for a header that looks fairly bread and bitter but he lets it hit off him rather than dealing with it. Secondly both Bannigan and Stanway go chasing the same player and neither get back to help the defence.

Stanway and MacKenzie were poor yesterday but they at least have the excuse of youth and in MacKenzie's case being played out of position.

No idea what the excuse is for Bannigan. Last time we played Bannigan as a CDM was in 2018/19 when Archie was last in charge. Even Archie realised he needed a better CDM but unfortunately for him he found a bigger dud in Brice Ntambwe.

Please, please , please can we learn a lesson quickly and look at a midfield that doesn't include Stuart Bannigan? Unless we sign someone on loan I'd much rather try Williamson as CDM, McInroy alongside him with Robinson in the advanced role.

I'm getting a vibe you don't like bannigan.....I suspect you have mentioned it before. Fair enough but the entire midfield were gash yesterday. If we still had docherty I'd have no problem with bannigan getting benched ( maybe he will next week ) but I'm not overly confident that any of our midfield are really that great. That said I never get too over excited when we get beat or indeed when we win. It has served me well over 50 years.....

  5. As always the team could be improved, but that's unlikely now between now and January. If we keep scoring goals at the rate we are doing, I'm not bothered if we lose a few at the other end. Worth mentioning that our league record over last 10 games ( into last season ) was W5 D4 L1. Add in the 6 play off games W5 L1 and that's mighty impressive. So perhaps we shouldn't tinker too much.

I agree. When we won the league in 2012/13 Championship clubs were able to compete with League 1 and league 2 English clubs. Now we can't compete with non-League English clubs. Even Scottish Premiership clubs are struggling to compete with lower league English clubs.

When you add that that the influx of European players has dried up since Brexit and now Saudi Arabia taking all the top talent its difficult to see it getting better.

Nowadays you see youngsters like Ben Doak and Cameron Cooper being snapped up for decent money before they have got anywhere near the first team. Any Scottish talent will get snapped up by English and in recent years Italian clubs forcing clubs at our level to play players they wouldn't have considered good enough a few seasons ago.

We are fortunate at this stage to still have guys like McMillan, Milne, Lawless, Graham and Fitzpatrick. Replacing that sort of natural talent will be even more difficult when they do leave.

So the league in which we sit is tarnished beyond reasons we can't possibly control. So what. All we can do do is compete in the time and phase we are in.

Erm! Aren't these forums all about opinions? And my opinion was we didn't look like keeping a clean sheet. Thankfully we did. But of course, you just hate anyone having an opinion. How sad that is for you.

Of course it us so easy being factual AFTER the result??

I don't hate anyone. Just enjoy pointing out those who have a need to prematurely give a negative opinion. Its great fun. We have a good team. Embrace it and who knows where we will end up this season. The stats under doolan say it all.

Maybe Doolan just doesn't have that manager's instinct.

Not sure what that means but no doubt a negative dig as we have come to expect. It's a very minor setback in the grand scheme of things and most of the fan base will see it this way. Onwards

So let me get this right under fan ownership the fans actually don’t get to know anything other than whatever the club board decides to tell them … no change then

Never said that. Major issues of significance yes. Not the day to day  mundane issues surrounding the upkeep of a stadium. For example I don't need to know if a floodlight bulb needs replaced. But if its two bulbs...maybe :-)

No one is suggesting micro managing anything simply communicating the decisions made and why

for example there’s been a lot of chat about the JHS roof and apparently we are spending money on it …I would be interested to know what the issue is , why it’s happened etc etc I do not think that is unreasonable

not everyone may be interested but lots of people are

I think it needs fixed. This sometimes happens to roofs. Do I need to know the why....no. If you do need to know I would respectfully suggest that is indeed the definition of attempted micro management.

It may have been …..but your predictive ability is unproven unless you know the lottery numbers this week?

to be clear we changed manager apparently to get promotion …..we failed in that objective …..who carried the can ?

We changed manager to have an improved chance of promotion. What happened thereafter clearly demonstrated the decision was right ( timing not withstanding ) for the overwhelming majority of our support.  Its really very simple unless you have a rather skewed view of things.

    My Turn.

I Said McCall should have been sacked after the comments he made after the Falkirk game. But in typical thistle style we waited until there was a mountain to climb before the penny dropped. I voiced doubts on Dools appointment after the one game, and it is little wonder that the best performance we had was without Bannigan. The squad we had last year was well good enough, if only we had had a proper manager. I give Bannigan pelters for not performing as he should in such a critical position. for at present its a waste of a shirt and akin to playing with ten men. Perhaps a real manager would further his career, because what he is doing in training is not being shown on the pitch, as i say for such a critical position its simply not good enough for this level of football.

I'm not convinced its truly Dools or Archibald back in a Tom Cruise mask, but nothing seems to change. The shutters open a few days before the season starts, we bring in players once the season begins and pray to John Lambie in the sky they hit the ground running, or they're half as good as the sales pitch from their agent. Crystal Palace went with a proven track record irrespective of his age. Perhaps this is the time we do the same and hunt for a proper manager. Sure was it not the Lambie him self who said "there is no room for sentiment in football"

So enlighten us. What proper or real ( sic ) manager is available, below pension age and within our budget and....how do you know they would be better.

And those Thistle managers are all still here?  We’re some of them not sacked?

Maybe Bannigan was not as good as they thought

I'd suggest that the 6 thistle managers in question have a better idea of what constitutes a good player, rather than your good self. I will stand corrected if you are in fact Pep Guardiola.

I've often wondered how Bannigan's role in the team would be described when identifying a replacement. If we were recruiting for a normal job and looked to advertise the post would it look like the following?

'Partick Thistle have an exciting job opportunity to be a Scottish Championship professional footballer.

The role is a custom midfield role. We expect you not to be strong enough defensively to play as a traditional 6 nor do we expect you to be able to run beyond the opposition defence into their 18 yard box and play as an "8" .We also have no expectations of even a smidgen of creativity that would make you remotely able to play as a "10". We do expect you to run a lot, we need you to pick up the ball and break forward into promising attacking positions and then pick the safest pass possible.

We don't expect you to tackle and when you do we fully expect you will pick up a yellow card and the occasional red . We don't need the successful applicant to provide many goals or assists with the previous post holder contributed 1 goal and 6 assists in the previous 2 championship seasons.

The post offers an attractive salary and the long term security of a 2 year contract. There is also a testimonial season after 10 years seasons even if some of those seasons you are injured and unable to play'

So you would have not counted the years he was out injured with regard to a testimonial? Why not go further and not pay him while injured.

  15. 2 hours ago, Lenziejag said:

So why has he been a constant in just about every Thistle team for 10 years ?

Simple answer. He's a good player playing a certain role that doesn't get the plaudits. Similar to Ross docherty who many posters had no time for....even though the stats showed he was a winner when in the team. There appear to be some who have a personal vendetta against bannigan. I've no time for that whether it is bannigan, or any other thistle player for that matter.

Being more ruthless on every level - on the park and off it - every penny going to the First Team Budget & Youth Development - look for Younger Keener Players who have something to prove ( eg Jackie Mac )  - stop the Jobs for the Boys Culture that seems to have dominated the Club for decades ( on the park & off it )

    Actually show some ambition

eg the Play Off Final - throwing away a three Goal Lead with 20 Minutes to go was disgraceful - we act as though we had won - talk about how great the Football was up to the Play Off Final - we blew it - yet we somehow ignore that fact ?

Where was the Game Plan if Ross County scored ? Why has no one ever questioned why we totally collapsed when it happened ?

I think you need to move on from the play off game. We all seen it, endured it, felt it. No amount of hand wringing will change it. For the record it has been comprehensively scrutinised by many on this forum and indeed social media. To say no-one has questioned it seems odd.
