Trying to work out how we can compete with raith and sign a player from them given they have soo much more cash than us ……maybe that’s one excuse we can put in the bin.

Or maybe it’s because Raith we’re only offering him a 6 month contract and we offered 18 months.

Doolan is focussing on the right areas in the window …. Our issue is conceding goals , scoring isn’t the problem.

Strengthening the defensive midfield area and the central defence is absolutely right.

Scoring goals was a problem against Dundee United but.
Anyway this looks an excellent signing and we know he is definitely match fit as well

  3. I’ve been critical of him and he didn’t have that much to do in the game but at 1-0 Sneddon produced a valuable save.  Had taken a deflection from one of our players that could have went anywhere but Jamie provided an important save

Have to agree that he is a great player and one that I would love to see in a Thistle shirt. My concern is that it would use up resources when we have far more urgent priorities to address. We have already wasted some of them on a 4th keeper. If there is some way we can land him (and Paton) in the summer I’d be very happy

As said Thomas would be an upgrade on what we have.  Alston, McInroy, Lyon and Robinson are all decent but they are not the same quality as Don Thomas.  2 could be away in summer.  Can we guarantee Robinson will be injury free when he has so far not proven to be and Lyon has still a bit to do

I've often thought Thomas would be a great addition.

Having said that, recruiting a number 10 when we have McIntory, Alston, Robinson and Lyon picking up a wage feels like overkill. I'd be happier if we were trimming the squad in that area before recruiting there, or sticking with what we have.

If he's signed for the wing, I'd again question the need when we have Lawless and Fitzy who are both better than him imo (though, to reiterate, I do rate him highly).

Thomas feels like the right answer to the wrong question.

Those 3 are decent players but Thomas or for that matter Turner would be an upgrade on the 3 of them to be honest.  2 of them are also contracted only till the end of the season as well

Financially and for the sake of his career I suspect we might not be his first choice.
He looks a fine player and Queens will certainly miss him should he move elsewhere

It’s been reported today that Dundee United are not pursuing Thomas.  Of course who knows if there’s truth in whether we are linked or not

Don Thomas is a very good player and the wheels on the QP bus are def falling off.  Maybe they progressed too quickly?  Just don't think we can pay any transfer fees.

I’m hoping him being Glasgow based would give us an advantage

Bannigan was given a 2 year extension , Sneddon was given a 1 year extension so not really comparing like for like, however given Bannigan has been here for a lot longer than Sneddon and Graham and Lawless does that make him the best paid player in the team? If not does then your point about Sneddon being here 6 years makes no impact on the wage he earns.

My point isn't and never has been is Jamie Sneddon on pennies. My point was he is probably significantly cheaper than Mitchell. If you think Sneddon is on close to or the same as Mitchell fair play but I'd be surprised.

Yeah I think Sneddon will be on same as Mitchell- both are considered to be number ones and due to his length of service I think will be the same.  I do agree with you he will be on less than Bannigan, Graham and Lawless but as I say think he will be on same as Mitchell

It was well publicised last summer that Sneddon had been given a 1 time take it or leave it 1 year contract extension in the immediate aftermath of our financial situation.

Lawless extended in November post external investment. Graham extended original after a transfer bid from Ayr and then again just recently.

So Graham and Lawless will not be on pennies. Sneddon will be be the least well paid of those and I would expect him to be cheaper than Mitchell.

Sneddon was offered a 1 year deal yes.  He was offered same time as Bannigan.  Do you think Bannigan is on pennies?  Sneddon has been here 6 years do you think he is on pennies?  Your comment about take it or leave it contract makes little sense as pretty much every player is offered a contract and will either take it or leave it

I'm not sure there's an great fall out with Mitchell or his agent.

Whilst Sneddon has his faults I don't think we are talking a massive upgrade if Mitchell was number 1. Mitchell was signed on a 2 year deal at the time where the JLow clown show was throwing money at promotion so chances are he's on a decent wage or a contract that has appearance payments. Sneddon got a 1 year extension after the playoffs when money was tight so chances are Sneddon is on significantly less than Mitchell.

When you add that Mitchell will shortly be 34 years old he's not someone who was likely to be part of the managers plans for next season. So maybe best for both parties that Mitchell leaves either on loan so we get part of his wages covered and he gets a chance to secure a contract at another club or a mutual termination is agreed so we release wages and he gets a chance to restart somewhere else.

Perhaps Doolan is just taking the pragmatic decision that he needs the budget to address other parts of the squad and in signing Stewart he has reasonable cover to summer and then he can decide if he keeps either of Sneddon, Stewart or decides to go for a proper number 1 with McCready as low cost backup?

I would like to think that with Stewart on board that Sneddon is more likely to be dropped and have to compete for number 1 otherwise we would have been better just going with McCready as cover and getting an emergency loan if either got a serious injury.

Given Sneddon has been here for over 6 years I doubt very much he is on pennies at all.  Likely on a very decent wage.  Graham and Bannigan got contracts extensions when money was allegedly tight- do you think they are on pennies?

The more Neilson plays the more he looks he could do a job as our DMF, but only if we have someone else to replace him at CB. Deservedly MoTM and great to see him score (his first?) goal for us.

If we could get Ashcroft in as CB then this would definitely be a possibility

Sneddon and Mitchell are both mediocre goalkeepers, and are certainly not title winning. However, unlike Gallagher and Hinchcliffe before him, Kenny Arthur inspires no confidence in developing young keepers. The very idea of Arthur instructing Cerny was quite frankly embarrassing. I was almost certain that Arthur was moving on, and thought that would have presented an opportunity to bring something fresh to the coaching department.

Mitchell is a better goalkeeper and we were 20 minutes away from winning promotion.  He wasn’t to blame for Tiffoney and Bannigan missing open goals

  13. Very good result and Doolans is doing great.  But the keeper situation needs addresssd.  While he. Is apparently injured currently Sneddon should have been dropped weeks ago for Mitchell.  Sneddon is an average keeper who in 6 years has barely improved- he needs to stop getting his contract renewed.

If Mitchell is getting moved out the club in January then this is a mistake

How about McCall. He did sign Docherty, Tiffoney, Holt, Turner , Milne, McMillan and  Graham and brought back Lawless, Fitzpatrick and Muirhead.

Some really good players in there!

Can we loan McCall back for a month

"A number of Scottish Championship clubs are keen to bring in Josh McPake. Partick Thistle and his former side, Greenock Morton being two that are noted."

I remember him scoring 2 against us for QP when they beat us 4-0 at Firhill but nothing much apart from that.

Was it not suggested over the summer that medical staff at clubs couldn’t sign him off with concerns over his heart?

Ok not being funny but you don’t actually know then and as for WJ it depends on what next to nothing actually means … if we had actual numbers we could decide for ourselves

It’s been mentioned on numerous football forums that the teams in the playoffs be it us or any other club make next to nothing from the playoffs.

the SPFL takes the lion share to compensate for the likes of the teams that get relegated from the premier league etc

  17. 8 minutes ago, javeajag said:

But let’s forget the extra cash the play off also generated …..

If didn’t generate much extra cash.  The SPFL take the lion share of money with the home team retaining about 20 per cent of the gate

Not sure if we can but I would take Anton Dowds back for the last half of the season, looks like there is still a player in there , he’s not an impact sub , play him behind BG .

Teams have sussed us out , with our threats down the left and right side . We need more of a threat down the middle of the park , Dowds coming back could solve that .

I would certainly play him before Adeloye and young Ricoh who is still learning

Completely agree.  The loan to Ayr has been great for him.  As you say whether we can or not will really depend on Anton and Kris.  Hope they can put any differences aside and get it done

We (and Ross County) were also handicapped by not knowing our league status till June. Raith for instance had a full month's start over us regarding signings re-signings etc. In fact longer than that as we had then still to await offers to a few existing players to either accept or decline. Many players Doolan may have earmarked for signing would be long gone, signed to other clubs. Kris has said so much for instance with regard to a defensive mid and a left sided centreback. The rumour that we were interested in Mulgrew to fill the latter was likely true, as I doubt there were any other suitable candidates remaining. The kinda desperate loan signing of McGinley further evidence.

Given the relative time restrictions we were under I'm not over critical re Doolan's signings. I don't believe we significantly profited from the play offs. So it's not that we had extra money to burn. In fact we all now know just how little we had in the kitty anyway. Being third in the league, if not to be celebrated is I believe something to be appreciated.

I suppose Airdrie to an extent we’re hampered with not knowing what division we were in though not to the same extent as us.

Generally happy with how things are progressing.  Mistakes have been made and recruitment was not particularly good although there were factors in that.  However starting in 24 hours Doolan has a chance to show he has learned the mistakes he made over the summer in terms of recruitment

  20. 1 hour ago, javeajag said:

It was always going to be a challenge to overcome DU but not impossible. The last time they came down they struggled to get out the division. I find the unsubstantiated claims about Raith amusing …..does any one have any actual information that they have spent a load of cash ? None that I can see and they have half our number of season ticket holders. And let’s ignore the £500k  we received. There is no reason why we couldn’t be above Raith except in football terms they are better. I also don’t  accept the we lost 4 players excuse either. That happens to us and every team in the championship nearly every year. Just check the other teams new signings for this season.

where Dollan has been culpable is in recruitment. Hardly any of his signings have been successful and clearly there are 5/6 of them he doesn’t rate as they never play. We can’t afford to only have a preferred  squad of 16. I shudder to think of the money he’s wasted.

Getting into the play offs is not a given and if other teams win their games in hand and we stumble then it could be a struggle.

so we are under achieving with a manager who is increasingly of concern.

The £500k investment came outside the transfer window.  Who knows if any of it is likely to be spent on players but even if some of it is then we will not see the affects of that for at least another 24 hours.  It might be that none of it is for the transfer window.  But it’s a fact that it was not there last summer when the window was open
