  1. Sad news. Can still remember how gutted I was when I heard he had been transferred. Had no idea at that tender age that Thistle were a selling club! In 158 appearances for Thistle, he scored at least 4 own goals ... 24 Aug 1960 v Rangers 7 Jan 1961 v Motherwell 16 Sep 1962 v Third Lanark 4 Mar 1963 v Arbroath (a flashing header!)
  2. In August 87 at a friendly at Stenhousemuir I found myself leaning on the boundry fence blethering to none other than Jackie Husband. He told me that he had been fed up with the approach DJ took as manager and had tried to give him some advice. He said he never made the transition from player to manager and acted as "one of the lads". He told me that they had met up later and that DJ admitted that he should have taken Jackie's advice.
  3. No. They had 1 home win in 2011-12 (beat Aberdeen 3-0 in April).
  4. Since the founding of the Scottish League (1890-91) only 3 teams have completed a season in the top flight with no home wins:- Vale of Leven 1891-92 Finished bottom and were not re-elected. Morton 1901-02 Finished bottom but were saved by increase from 10 to 12 clubs the following season. Raith Rovers 1962-63 Finished bottom and relegated. Hoping we don't make this trio a quartet. Anyone fancy the second leg of the play-off at home still looking for a first win?

Thistle players insisted the shot had gone over the bar. The referee dismissed the appeal after a long delay and the ball was centred. Arguments broke out and some Thistle players walked off but others seemed content to carry on. (Some supporters encouraged them to do so.) The referee abandoned the game. Fights broke out amongst the crowd as they gathered in front of the pavilion. Wiser counsel prevailed and nothing more serious then cheers and counter-cheers occurred. A replay was ordered by the SFA and the match was played on 10 November 1888. Third Lanark won 2-1.
  6. They are part of research I'm doing as a pastime.
  7. Agreed Duncan but the PT History Archive lists the keeper as Niven. It also lists McLindon (who isn't in the photo). I can't find any independent press report to verify. On balance however (my memories of Broomfield are hazy) I'd say the photo has the enclosure in the background so I'll go along with McFedris. Cheers.
  8. The abandoned St Johnstone game was only the 21st abandoned match in over 6,100 first team games (0.3%). 10 were at home, 11 away. Failing light/Fog 8 n/k 3 Waterlogged 4 Storm 1 Snow 3 Floodlight failure 2 There have only been 8 abandoned matches in the last 100 years - 4 at home, 4 away.
  9. Agreed. As in my earlier post I think this is Jim Gray. McFedris only played 2 league games for the 1st team and neither game included all of the players in the photo. Process of elimination leads me to Thistle v Falkirk on 30th April 1966. (Won 3-0). The photo doesn't immediately look like Firhill but the camera is at a strange angle. This is the only game Gray ever played with the remaining 10 players in the photo. Gray Campbell Muir Cunningham McKinnon Gibb Gallagher McParland Flanagan Roxburgh Duncan
  10. I'm sure I heard somewhere that in the rush to merge the SPL and the SFL, they forgot to include the rules about over-age players. That's why you can play them this season. I don't think the former SPL U-20 league allowed over-age players - hence the debate about the pros and cons of having a reserve league.
  11. Can't argue with that! Was just trying to point out that home wins are not as common as might be expected. Less than half.
  12. Frustrating though it is, winning at home is not that common. There have been 40 games in the premiership so far this season. Only 17 (43%) were home wins. 14 (35%) were away wins. 9 were draws. Last weekend every match was an away win.
  13. Just back from the football exhibition in the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Galleries. Well worth a visit. Was interested to see a display case with a kiddie's hand-knitted football jersey and socks to match dating from around 1900 - in bold red, yellow and black horizontal stripes. The display notes explain that football strips were generally drab but that they gradually became more colourful early in the 20th century. This wee wean pre-dated our change to red and yellow hoops by 30+ years.
  14. While they're at it, it might be a good idea if someone (Thistle? The cooncil?) could do something about the water that's been coming up through the pavement at the main door and running down Firhill Road for (it seems) years, creating brown stains right down the street past the main stand. I hope it's only rust!
  15. Correct. A one-off game between the two cup winners. Date: 19 sept 1921. Scorers: Wilson, Blair and Kinloch. Att: 14,000. Team: Campbell, Struthers, Bulloch, Johnstone, Wilson, Harris, Blair, Kinloch, Robertson, McMenemy, Salisbury. Robertson at centre-forward made his one and only appearance for the club.
  16. Just looking at the contents of the "package". Anyone else think that access to match highlights is going to be by subscription for non-TAGites next season or am I reading too much into this?
  17. Agreed. 6 October 1963 started a run of 9 consecutive wins in the league. These were followed by a defeat to Celtic in the Glasgow cup but then another league game was won. If you're only counting league games in the same season, that's 10 in a row. 14 May 1982 to 28 Sept 1982 was indeed 8 consecutive league wins but there were 2 League Cup wins (both to Meadowbank) in that sequence as well.
  18. Most probably October - December 1904-05............................. Hearts H 2-1 Dundee A 1-0 Morton A 1-0 Motherwell H 1-0 Port Glasgow Athletic H 3-0 Queen's Park A 4-1 Third Lanark H 3-2 Kilmarnock H 2-0 (Drew the next one 2-2 then lost 4 in a row!)
  19. SFL website says there is a pitch inspection at 10.30.
  20. "a controlled container" means any bottle, can or other portable container, whether open or sealed, which is, or was, in its original manufactured state, capable of containing liquid and is made from such material or is of such construction, or is so adapted, that if it were thrown at or propelled against a person it would be capable of causing some injury to that person; So, at every match that a cup is presented, the SFA, SFL and SPL are in breach of the act!
  21. Yes. Sorry, got that round the wrong way!
  22. In the last 18 seasons only 3 teams that were not top of the First Division on Christmas day have failed to go on and finish first.
  23. Don't think so. We'd already played Falkirk at home that season. Pretty sure this is during the big freerze of 62/63 when the fixture against falkirk would have been the only senior game in Scotland. I remember the water coming up through the pitch about half an hour before kick-off. The sun came out, melted the frost and the pitch became waterlogged. We all got tickets on the way out.

The double gate at the turnstiles was locked and everyone was crowding around an exit no wider than your average household door. As far as I could see only one person at at time could get out. One or two "comments" were made to the steward to open it but he didn't (at least before I got out). Instead, he went into the carpark to his right and unlocked the double gates there. As I left I heard someone asking to see the supervisor. The "old" stand was litterally bouncing and swaying when Thistle scored. Not a light in sight. Didn't see any safety notices. Must be the only "stand" in the country where they allow standing. There are no crush barriers. If anyone at the back had tripped forward there could have been a right pile up. No fault of the people standing but unless you were early enough to choose your seat carefully, then the people standing obscured the view of the goal to the left. An accident waiting to happen is Central Park.
