In terms of equipment, you'll need a bike . For general cycling there is a great path running all the way out to Balloch and Loch Lomond. I think Mugdock Park near Milngavie also has quite a few tracks and trails designed for mountain biking. Also, you could do worse than have a chat with some of the local bike shops - Dales, West End Cycles - they're well clued up and more than happy to give out advice.
