pthardie
I like the idea of the 5th official to help the linesman and referee out but why do they stand on the the same side as the linesman? Surely if they were on the other side then linesman and official together can make a more accurate decision.

pthardie
It's kind of my point. If he was on the other side then surely there would have been a good chance ONE of them could have seen it.
Mr Scruff
It's kind of my point. If he was on the other side then surely there would have been a good chance ONE of them could have seen it. It was so marginal that there's no way he could have got an angle to say with absolute certainty. You'd normally need to see the ball bouncing - and as you see in tennis often calls even then are wrong. It really just illustrates that technology is the only solution. Exiled AusJag
It seems it's still evolving. If I was lucky anough to have additional assistants as well as assistants, I would prefer them on the left looking at the attacked goal. http://fortheintegrityofsoccer.blogs.com/artandscienceofrefereeing/2011/08/additional-assistant-referees-the-sequel-from-ed.html give a very good and valid reason for this
