  1. The one-off tourney was one of a number of fund-raising events were held at the time to aid the unemployed, and all 6 League teams from Glasgow took part. Attendances were maybe less than half the League average, although still healthy enough to raise some decent funds; in the region of 5,000 for the Thistle v Clyde game and around 10,000 for Thistle v Rangers in the semi. 20,000 saw the final between Rancid and Septic. No balaclavas. Everyone wore a bunnet no matter what.
  2. A no-brainer for any goals panel, that's Miles goal all day long, he got himself right in there, made an on-target connection, and his force and momentum ensured the ball got over the line, albeit the last touch was off the QOS defender.
  3. 26.01.2019 Queen of the South [h] W2-1 (SPFL Championship - game 22) JANUARY STOPS THE ROT 21-year-old Jack McMillan makes his Thistle debut. Stuart Bannigan registers his 200th competitive appearance for Thistle. Joe Cardle's two starts have resulted in two goals. Miles Storey scores his fifth goal for Thistle and, for the fifth time, the club win the match in question. Stephen Dobbie scores against Thistle for the third consecutive game this season. Thistle's paltry tally of 21 League goals in 2018-19 looks somewhat ridiculous against Dobbie's personal haul of 19. Thistle go 8 home League games unbeaten against Queen's, extending the ongoing H2H record. Thistle's 4th consecutive home League win against the Doonhamers matches the H2H record (4) set in 1957. For the first time since July, 2017, Thistle go one calendar month without defeat in competitive action. ongoing sequences: 10 competitive away games without a win, 25th Aug 2018 to date. (Longest run since: 10 games; 19th Aug 2017 to 27th Dec 2017. Club-record: 26 games; 28th Nov 1908 to 28th Aug 1909.) 10 second-tier away games without a win to start off this season, 4th Aug 2018 to date. (Longest run since the club-record: 12 games; 11th Aug 1984 to 12th Jan 1985.) 11 second-tier away games without a win, 4th May 2013 to date. (Longest run since: 14 games; 11th Sep 2004 to 9th Apr 2005. Club-record: 17 games; 16th Sep 1989 to 25th Aug 1990.) 40 consecutive competitive appearances for Blair Spittal, 31st Mar 2018 to date, a new personal best for the player. (Longest run since: Adam Barton - 54 games; 28th Dec 2016 to 3rd Feb 2018. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.) 71 games since back-to-back League wins, 11th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 71 games; 16th Apr 2013 to 14th Mar 2015. Club-record: 77 games; 2nd Nov 1912 to 5th Dec 1914.)
  4. Nice one ptd. Aidan's the first Jag ever to score in three competition debuts as a 17-year-old! Previously, Peter McKennan and Jim Melrose did two at that young age. The overall record-holders are Jimmy McColl and Peter McKennan with 5 apiece: Jimmy McColl (5) 02.05.1922 Celtic [h] L*3-3 (Glasgow Charity Cup Quarter Final) after extra-time (2-2, 90 mins); * Celtic won 8-6 on corners 02.09.1922 Rangers [a] L1-3 (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final) 08.10.1921 Albion Rovers [a] W1-0 (SFL First Division - game 11) 15.11.1921 Clyde [h] W4-2 (Lord Provost's Rent Relief Fund Cup Quarter Final) 28.01.1922 Dumbarton Harp [h] W7-0 (Scottish Cup 1st Round) Peter McKennan (5) 04.09.1935 Third Lanark [a] L1-2 (Glasgow Cup Quarter Final) 09.05.1936 St Mirren [a] W3-0 (Paisley Charity Cup Final) 09.12.1939 Celtic [h] W4-2 (Regional League, Western Division - game 8) 05.06.1943 Hibernian [h] L2-5 (Summer Cup 1st Round, 2nd leg) 20.04.1946 Clachnacuddin [a] D2-2 (Victory Cup 1st Round, 1st leg) The full list of those who've done 3 or more: Competition debut goalscorers 5 – Jimmy McColl 5 – Peter McKennan 4 – Joe McBride 4 – John Wallace 4 – Mark Roberts 4 – Willie Sharp 3 – Aidan Fitzpatrick 3 – Alex Gourlay 3 – Andrew Johnston 3 – Andy Roxburgh 3 – Billy Hainey 3 – Bobby Howitt 3 – Calum Campbell 3 – Damon Gray 3 – Davie Mathie 3 – Dougie Wright 3 – Douglas Stockdale 3 – George Smith 3 – Jim Melrose 3 – Jimmy Bone 3 – Jimmy Walker 3 – Joe McGeachy 3 – John Inglis 3 – John Muirhead 3 – John Torbet 3 – Juan Ramón 3 – Rod McDonald 3 – Sam Kennedy 3 – Sammy Picken 3 – Steven Lawless 3 – Tom Doonan 3 – Willie Paul 8 Scots in the starting line-up on Saturday for the second time this season, the last two games with Queen of the South in fact. The last time there were more (10) was the 1-0 League Cup win at Airdrie in July, 2016, Danny Devine being the odd-man-out on that occasion.
  5. From a games perspective, the South terracing was last seen intact at the Peterhead play-off game in May, 2006. A pre-season friendly at home to Morton in July 2006 was the first game of the Bing, and the players were duly inspired to serve up a 0-0 draw. The premature demolition was an act of amazing ineptitude from the BoD (in my opinion).
  6. Ah, I don't doubt you're right on that one lads, the storm damage being the beginning of the end for the roof. Will put the full removal query on the to-do list.
  7. George did a fair bit better than that - his best run of 145 competitive games not-out covered three whole calendar years in 1965, 1966 and 1967! A bout of flu got him in the end and he had to sit out a 2-1 League defeat at home to Hibernian on Saturday, 13th January, 1968, which, incidentally, was the last game to feature the old North enclosure roof which was set to be hit with "the great storm" the following morning.
  8. ^ Oooft.... good riddance to that stat Barney.
  9. 19.01.2019 Stranraer [h] W4-1 (Scottish Cup 4th Round) FITZY ROCKIN' THE STATS Gary Caldwell fields the youngest starting line-up of his reign (24y, 3m, 23d). Thistle's two youngest sides of 2018-19 have registered two cup wins over Stranraer by nine goals to one on aggregate. 17-year-old Aidan Fitzpatrick scores his third goal for Thistle vs. Stranraer already; only Frank Coulston (5) has netted more often for the Jags against the Blues. Aidan has registered a goal or an assist every 107 minutes for Thistle in 2018-19, a return ratio which is second only to Joe Cardle (60 mins) and streets ahead of his nearest team-mates, Andréa M'Buyi-Mutombo (202 mins), Blair Spittal (210 mins) and Chris Erskine (215 mins). Joe Cardle scores his first goal for Thistle. Steven Saunders scores his first goal for Thistle. Blair Spittal, player of the month for December, nets his 7th competitive goal of the season, extending his lead at the top of our scoring charts to 3. Thistle remain unbeaten in all 9 of their Cup matches versus Stranraer, a run which stretches from 1938 to date. ongoing sequences: 10 competitive away games without a win, 25th Aug 2018 to date. Club-record: 17 games; 16th Sep 1989 to 25th Aug 1990.) 39 consecutive competitive appearances for Blair Spittal, 31st Mar 2018 to date, a new personal best for the player. (Longest run since: Adam Barton - 54 games; 28th Dec 2016 to 3rd Feb 2018. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.) 70 games since back-to-back League wins, 11th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 71 games; 16th Apr 2013 to 14th Mar 2015. Club-record: 77 games; 2nd Nov 1912 to 5th Dec 1914.)
  10. You're right, they've never played together for Thistle. Gary bade his first-spell farewell on Saturday, 9th May, 2009, in a 4-0 defeat away to Dundee in the SFL First Division. He was offski before any of the pre-season games, Dundee's financial lure terminating his Firhill contract a year earlier than scheduled. Chris made his debut on Saturday, 11th July, 2009, in a 1-1 friendly draw away to Stirling Albion. Currently, there's a "same competition" rule in place, meaning Harkins will be available for the Stranraer game, his one match suspension kicking-in for the QOS game the following week.
  11. And a happy New Year to you Allyo, our PTFC affliction notwithstanding
  12. Unless Caldwell wants his Tannadice GTF chant amplified tenfold he should be thinking of nothing but getting the strongest possible team on the park and getting this tie won at the first time of asking. Nothing else will be acceptable to me. All the losers who say they're not bothered about Cups make me sick.
  13. I've spared you the weekly misery for long enough, happy ******* New Year 28.09.2018 Dunfermline Athletic [a] L0-1 (SPFL Championship - game 7) A RECORD-EQUALLING NIGHT Thistle's 8-year-old H2H record of 4 consecutive League clean-sheets at East End Park comes to an end. For only the second time in history, Thistle have opened the away legs of a second tier campaign with 4 straight defeats. Ian McCall's Thistle were the only other side to do so, back in 2010-11. 06.10.2018 Ross County [h] L0-2 (SPFL Championship - game 8) ALAN ARCHIBALD'S FINALE Thistle lose a home League match in the second tier for the first time since December, 2012. The 2 goal loss matches our record negative margin of defeat at home to the Dingwall side. Thistle's poor record at home to County in the second tier continues; Jags have won only 3 of the 15 clashes. Following 18 months of painful decline, manager Alan Archibald is sacked shortly after the game. At 5y, 8m, 6d, his tenure in the hotseat was the longest since Bertie Auld (6y, 4m, 17d) and the sixth longest of any Thistle manager in history. Before the game, he stood as second only to Jim McInally (Peterhead) as the longest serving manager in the SPFL. 13.10.2018 Dundee United [h] L1-2 (SPFL Championship - game 9) AN UNEXPECTED RECORD FOR GERRY Caretaker Gerry Britton manages Thistle almost 15 years after having last done so. His tenure gap (14y, 10m, 6d) takes over from Gerry Collins (13y, 2m, 22d) as the longest between managerial spells at Thistle. Thistle and Dundee United meet in second tier action at Firhill for the first-time ever. Jai Quitongo scores his only goal for Thistle. 20.10.2018 Alloa Athletic [a] L0-1 (SPFL Championship - game 10) YET ANOTHER RECORD-MAKING DEFEAT FOR THE CLUB Gary Caldwell becomes the 24th individual to take permanent charge of the Partick Thistle first team, and the tenth of that group to have been capped as a Scottish internationalist. 23-year-old Souleymane Coulibaly makes his Thistle debut. Thistle continue on their very strange run of 21 competitive games without a draw. You need to rewind back 65 years (season 1953-54) to find a longer sequence (25). For the first time in history, Thistle lose a third consecutive game to Alloa Athletic, an ongoing run since 2006. This extends the H2H League record and sets a new record in the competitive games category. For first time in history, Thistle lose a third consecutive game under three different managers. Some going, even by our standards! For first time in history, Thistle have opened the away legs of a second tier campaign with 5 straight defeats. 27.10.2018 Ayr United [h] L0-1 (SPFL Championship - game 11) FIRING BLANKS For the first time in history Thistle fail to score in a third consecutive competitive match against Ayr United. It's the first time since 1982 that we've lost 3-in-a-row against the Honest Men. One of the most joyless periods in Thistle's history continues; it's now SIXTY League games without back-2-back wins. 03.11.2018 Greenock Morton [a] L1-5 (SPFL Championship - game 12) MISERABLE CLUB-RECORD EMPHATICALLY EXTENDED Brice Ntambwe scores his first goal for Thistle. 20-year-old Jack Storer plays his last game for Thistle. After having went 5 unbeaten against 'Ton under Alan Archibald, Gary Caldwell's Thistle succumb to a thrashing against the Greenock men. It's our greatest margin of defeat against them since a 4-0 League reverse at Cappielow 28 years ago. Thistle reset their new club-record of opening the away legs of a second tier campaign with straight defeats, now 6-in-a-row. 10.11.2018 Inverness Caledonian Thistle [h] L0-1 (SPFL Championship - game 13) ANOTHER RECORD-MAKING LOSS For the first time ever, Thistle go 4 without a win against Inverness CT, both in League and competitive action. 17.11.2018 Falkirk [a] D1-1 (SPFL Championship - game 14) CRAZY DRAWLESS RUN ENDS Craig Slater scores his first goal for Thistle. Thistle's strange sequence of 24 competitive games without a draw (8th May 2018 to 10th November 2018) comes to an end, 3 shy of equalling the 120-year-old record of 27 games. Jags go 9 League games without defeat vs. Bairns, 2011 to date. The H2H record (11) was set in 1921. 01.12.2018 Queen of the South [a] L0-1 (SPFL Championship - game 15) DISASTROUS RUN CONTINUES Since scoring 3 times in the first half against Queen's back in September, Thistle have scored just ONCE in the last nine first halves of football. Thistle's great run of 8 Leagues games unbeaten against the Doonhamers comes to an end. Gary Caldwell fails to win for the sixth consecutive time as Thistle manager. His 0.17 points-per-game ratio is the lowest ever recorded at this stage in competitive action across all first-spell managerial tenureships. Similarly, Gary's 0.33 goal-per-game ratio (2 in 6) currently places him with the lowest figure of any Thistle manager in history, caretaker or otherwise. Jimmy Bone (0.67) is the leader in the clubhouse as a caretaker, whilst Gerry Collins (0.88) had the lowest gpg ratio of all the permanents. Only once before have Thistle fans had to wait longer for their first away win of a second tier campaign; it was 13th time lucky for Benny Rooney's Thistle in 1984-85 who finally achieved a 4-0 victory at Glebe Park in January. 08.12.2018 Dunfermline Athletic [h] W2-0 (SPFL Championship - game 16) 4 GOALS AND 4 WINS FOR MILES 19-year-old Dan Jefferies makes his debut, becoming just the third Welshman known to have played for Thistle. Blair Spittal, currently on his personal-best appearance run for the club, hits the top of our competitive scorers chart with his 4th goal of the season. Every time Miles Storey has scored for Thistle we've won, his run now standing at 4-in-a-row (2-1 v Dundee in Oct' 17; 1-0 v St Johnstone in Oct' 17, 2-0 v Albion Rovers in Jul' 18 and now 2-0 v Dunfermline in Dec' 18). More of this please! Gary Caldwell wins his first game as Thistle manager at the 7th time of asking, jointly the third longest run of its kind for any Jags gaffer. With his winless opening run of 10 in 1986, Derek Johnstone still stands with the unwanted club-record. 15.12.2018 Alloa Athletic [h] D2-2 (SPFL Championship - game 17) RARE PENALTY GOAL FOR DOOLAN Kris Doolan scores his first penalty goal for Thistle in more than 7 years, bringing his conversion rate up to 71.4% (5 out of 7), all coming in League action. With his 118th competitive goal for the club, Kris joins Jimmy Walker in joint 4th place in that particular all-time goalscorers chart. Blair Spittal stays top of our 2018-19 competitive scorers chart with his 5th goal of the season. Thistle are now 4 competitive games without a win versus Alloa, 2 shy of equalling the H2H record which was set in 1990. 22.12.2018 Ross County [a] L0-2 (SPFL Championship - game 18) AWAY DAY WOES CONTINUE 21-year-old Jai Quitongo plays his last game for Thistle. Thistle go 10 second-tier away games without a win, a run which stretches from 2013 to date. It's the longest such run since the relegation season of 2004-05 (14) and 6 shy of the all-time club-record (17) set in 1990. 29.12.2018 Greenock Morton [h] L1-2 (SPFL Championship - game 19) FAREWELL TO TAM 30-year-old Tam Scobbie plays his last game for Thistle. After 10 competitive games, Gary Caldwell sits with a ratio of 0.5 points-per-game. Of all the first-spell tenureships, only Derek Johnstone (0.3) in 1986 had a worse start. After 10 competitive games, Gary Caldwell sits with a ratio of 0.7 goals-per-game. Of all the first-spell tenureships, only Derek Johnstone (0.6) in 1986 had a worse start. 05.01.2019 Dundee United [a] D1-1 (SPFL Championship - game 20) 4 MID-SEASON DEBUTANTS 20-year-old Conor Hazard makes his Thistle debut. 21-year-old Ally Roy makes his Thistle debut. 27-year-old Steven Saunders makes his Thistle debut. 31-year-old Joe Cardle makes his Thistle debut. Kris Doolan scores his 5th competitive goal versus United. Only Alex O'Hara (6) has scored more often for Thistle versus the Tannadice men. His 119th competitive goal places him as outright 4th in our all-time competitive scorers chart behind only George Smith, Willie Paul and Willie Sharp. For the first time in history, Thistle will go into February still looking for their first away League win in a second-tier campaign. 12.01.2019 Falkirk [h] D1-1 (SPFL Championship - game 21) ANOTHER UNWANTED RECORD With his 6th goal of the season, Blair Spittal extends his lead to 2 at the top of our competitive goals chart for 2018-19. His goals/assists combi-total (10) is 4 ahead of his nearest team-mates (Erskine, Slater and Doolan), all of whom sit with 6. Gary Harkins becomes the first Thistle player to be sent-off since Danny Devine received a red-card at Easter Road in March, 2018. Thistle go 10 League games without defeat vs Falkirk (2011 to date), 1 away from equalling the H2H record (11) set in 1921. By contrast, 1 second-tier win in 15 equals the woeful club-record which was set in 1989-90. Thistle go SEVENTY games without back-to-back League wins, a run which, usually, occurs once in a blue-moon. Incredibly, it's the second such run in recent seasons following a similar fiasco (71) between 2013 and 2015. Prior to these, the only two other such runs were: 70 (1907-1910) and 77 (1912-1914). Four of the current crop have been involved in two of these horrendous runs; Chris Erskine, Christie Elliott, Kris Doolan and Stuart Bannigan. ongoing sequences: 10 competitive away games without a win, 25th Aug 2018 to date. Club-record: 17 games; 16th Sep 1989 to 25th Aug 1990.) 38 consecutive competitive appearances for Blair Spittal, 31st Mar 2018 to date, a new personal best for the player.
  14. We originally had a general committee that was responsible for all aspects of running the club and, through time, we ended up with a dedicated sub-committee responsible for team selection. Most of the committees in the early years featured a mixture of senior gentlemen (often upstanding members of the community with various business interests) as well as players, both retired and current. I think it'd be fair to say that they all seemed very committed, and we've a lot to thank our 19th century forefathers for; they were always fighting and winning battles in adversity and without their dedication Thistle would have died like so many hundreds of other clubs did in that era. One thing that recurs often in research is that the team captain had a big role to play in both team selection and in-play tactics, a trait which lasted well into the 1920s at least.
  15. Likewise AJ As for the grey hair, this will be the season to do it I reckon! Lambie went W4 D3 L3 in 1990 (post-Clark) and had a torrid time of it post-Bryce in 1999, W1 D3 L6. In fact, his 3rd spell reached a shocking low of P15 W1 D3 L11. The club's full competitive record (sorted by pts-per-game then goal difference) breaks down thus: Re AA, what initially worked for him (the tight gang) eventually worked against him. I think he lost his ability to control and motivate his last crop, the mysterious case of Abdul Osman almost symbolic as the case in point. Sh!t like that that affects the group mentality. It's a helluva thing and very difficult to pinpoint, players (especially the journeymen) can be lazy bestirts if you let them be. I'm sure AA will have learnt a lot about the fine art of man management.
  16. The opening ten competitive games across all the first-spell tenureships (3pts per win): As for the bullet point, Gerry Collins has the dubious distinction of shortest number of competitive games of any full-time tenureship (P15, W1 D2 L12), closely followed by Sandy Clark (P17, W2 D6 L9). Personally, I can't ever recall taking such an instant dislike to an incoming Thistle gaffer as I have done with Caldwell, a position I formed in the immediate hours after his post-match reaction at Alloa. He strikes me as a complete bullsh!tter and, no matter what happens from hereon, I don't think I'll ever trust what he says.
  17. Ran out of likes (WAT is mean that way) so I'll just say ditto this.
  18. Hmm. Good thinking Jagger. Also, best player he ever played with at Thistle? If it's going well, it'd be good to move on to more contemporary matters. Does he think Scotland will qualify for the 2020 Euros? Can Morrissey recover from his recent controversies? What's his position on Brexit? If anyone has any more questions for Elevenone's big interview with Davie Dolan please get them in nice and early, thank you.
  19. Indeed, I wouldn't think many can. He was a trialist right-back for Dick Campbell's Thistle in July 2005 and played for 72 minutes of a pre-season friendly at Glebe Park, being replaced by Kenny Haswell shortly after Thistle fell 3 behind. The 4-0 loss at Brechin stands as one and only appearance as a Jag.
  20. Well, I wasn't expecting that! Dolan is one of the obscure surname-only entries in the great Jaggy database, something I'd love to rectify if possible. As I currently understand it, he was an unused sub the next Saturday (a 3-1 win away to Stenny) and then came on as a sub in a 2-1 friendly defeat away to Baillieston Juniors two days later on the Monday. Does that square with the man himself? Things I'd like to know: Commonly used forename? Full birth name? Date of birth? Place of birth? Height? Weight? (roughly, while at Thistle) Club list? (including Jnrs or Amtrs, roughly in order if poss inc. a specific note of which club he came from) Was he a trialist or did he sign for a short spell? Can he remember the names of any of the two trialist subs in the East Stirlingshire game? (pushing my luck!) I'll publish this info in some form in the future; it'd be nice for him to take his place in the Thistle story, even if it was just a small part? Of course, he might tell you to do one, in which case don't sweat it, I wouldn't want you getting done for harassment. edited to add: Oh, and a headshot jpeg from the period would be extra splendid : - )
  21. He was a trialist for Billy Lamont's Thistle in July, 1987 and kept a clean-sheet in his only appearance; a 0-0 friendly draw against East Stirlingshire in the unusual setting of the British Aluminium Social Club playing fields. With hindsight, Lamont could have done with signing him - injuries forced the fielding of 7 different keepers in 7 consecutive game just a few months later! Right, own up, who were the dafties who turned up at Firs Park? http://partickthistleahistory.wikifoundry.com/page/1987+-+East+Stirling%2C+0-0
  22. 18.07.2001 Alan Morgan Select [h] W5-1 (Alan Morgan Testimonial) The record was almost certainly set by the 10 ex-Jags who lined up against our regular first team in the above: Andy Murdoch, Ray Montgomerie, Albert Craig, Jim Duffy, Gerry Collins, Ian Cameron, Paul Kinnaird, Alan Morgan, Derek McWilliams and Chic Charnley. Bobby Russell was the lone Ranger. Of course, Alan Morgan was also a future Jag as he changed strips and played out the game as a true Jag for auld lang syne, sealing his night with a goal from the penalty spot! 23.07.2011 Stenhousemuir [h] W2-1 (Challenge Cup 1st Round) With only 50% of historical opposition data compiled to date I couldn't be definitive at this time with an answer in competitive action, but there were 6 former Jags in the starting line-up against us in this one, and that will take some beating: Willie Lyle, Kevin McKinlay, Martyn Corrigan, Brown Ferguson, Eric Paton and Stevie Murray.
  23. Full backs raiding deep into enemy territory and bodies in the box - a hard-working performance which bore fruit, more of this please.
  24. Sure I've read a snippet that said the Spittal's were uncle and nephew, tho I'd be pleased to be put straight if not. I make it eleven pairings in total:
