  1. You are indeed correct, Blackpool Jags. The Pacifc Northwest, home of dark ales, pale women, rain, a couple of Nomads, and now, amazingly, a Super Bowl trophy.
  2. No one here expected that level of a thumping. It was also brilliant as a lifelong loather of the h*ns of the Rockies to watch Elway near tears as he watched the Broncos Manning the bed. The PNW is a shattered sports region with a long history of losing. This was needed.
  3. Randall Cunningham was born in the wrong era. There has been a glut of undeniably good running quarterbacks coming out of college and an increased willingness to run option offenses. Those guys who only scrambled on broken plays or could only get a shot in Canada, might have excelled - Steve Young in a Chip Kelly offense? He did just fine as it was, obviously. Just saying. Anyway...go hawks
  4. you'll be happy to know that Seattle is going mental right now.
  5. classic threads. i actually remember ending the last thread i commented on with the apocryphal (to paraphrase) "he's your problem now, i'm glad my tax dollars aren't paying for his appeals any more." years pass, run-ins with the law in the UK and then he pops up back in the States like the bad penny he is. maybe i'll take the contrary position and argue for his release.
  6. the kinks super furry animals spaceman 3 the beatles the crazy world of arthur brown the clash the jam the beta band hawkwind bowie joy division/new order the la's were it expanded to include irish bands/artists - Richard Harris. 'a tramp shining' and 'the yard went on forever' are like 'scott' and 'scott 4' but better. believe it.
  7. let me start by saying that in fairness, i hardly think i'd want to celebrate my first communion at Ibrox. could you imagine? i've only skimmed this, so forgive me, but is it really sectarian for a club to advertise in a church magazine? the issue of sectarianism isn't openly professing a faith, but openly condemning (or worse) someone of an other faith. there's a strong market within their fan base that is RC, so they found a way to make some extra money that is actually pretty innocuous (birthdays, communions). cynical - yes. sectarian or hypocritical - no.
  8. "the americans." i like that. all part of a secret CIA plan to spread american evils to unwilling and forced consumers. funny fact, every single american enters everyone of their children in pageants. further fact, every family in melbourne who are putting their kid in aren't doing so because they want to, but because every american is forcing them to.
  9. Bonne Fête du Canada...paix, ordre et bon gouvernement, chiennes! calm and reasoned salutes from just south of the border. sorry i'm not up there this year. was in Victoria for it about two years ago and had a great time.
  10. while i really enjoyed the depth of investigative journalism, i just don't feel like it talked about Celtic enough. who do i talk to at the Daily Record to ensure that every article about Thistle is ultimately about one of the Old Firm? because i really think the Daily Record needs to do more of that.
  11. seems like more than a couple of the Canadians who appear on here time to time are from the Island. boston just slowed them down, too. the team speed just wasn't there when it mattered. plus, Thomas was just huge. ...and, as you said, the power play wasn't clicking. and they let themselves get pushed around too much. and i may have jinxed them by wearing my old school stick-in-rink-hat. i stopped during the Chicago series and they turned it around. i brought it back when Boston evened the series, but it wasn't enough. fnck... re: the rioting...i still say Seattle does that better.
  12. i think the common denominator here is me. i only support teams that lose. that was a disaster. even the rioting is a little lackluster
  13. nothing like a game 7. i've just never experienced a game 7 for the cup that i have been as emotionally invested in. GO CANUCKS GO!
  14. that was a great game and gives me hopes for a really exciting championship. tim thomas was huge in goal; truly unbelievable performance. it's even getting coverage by the local rags in seattle.
  15. i love sudden death overtime victories. that little bit more sweet. Canucks in the Finals!!!!
  16. the discipline that the Sharks lacked in game 2 was even more lacking for the Canucks last night. stupid, stupid penalties. that said, Vancouver only lost one period. it was tight but ended even in the 2nd and they won the 3rd. imo, if they had been more disciplined and more keyed in from the start, they could have actually won that game.
  17. San Jose lost the plot, especially that Eager fella who just gave up on having any sort of discipline. the Canucks offense put on one of the best displays of the play-offs so far, imo. this can mean only that Luongo is due an absolute howler tomorrow! Go Canucks!
  18. well done to the Red Wings for taking it to seven. so long as they lose, i win the the pool on that series. regardless...Go Canucks Go! the green men shall lift us to victory
  19. sadly, the Canucks will find a way to take it to 7 games!
  20. Canucks 2 up, Boston 2 up, the Caps 3 down. so far so good.
  21. it should be mentioned that all incest isn't actually illegal. it is down the degree of incest. in scotland (unlike many other places it must be noted), first cousins can marry. it's the proximity of the consanguinity. it is also unfair to assume that longstanding taboos or religious morals come from a lack of understanding or irrational basis. normative impulses are neither inherently good or bad, but representative of a particular need within the society that creates them. that need may not be relevant to another. both taboo and morality are social constructs acting as particular mechanisms of social control that served some purpose. that a incestuous relationship between a brother and a sister produced some questionable offspring was likely not lost on folk in those dark, harrowing days before the enlightenment and this arguably led to the incest taboo. homosexual activity, for example, has not been soundly banned and punished in every society. there is an argument to be made that such activity has been "frowned upon" more in less settled and more threatened societies. This is why you see it early and often within the Old Testament, or why certain minority communities have a very low tolerance. further, what defines homosexual activity varies wildly. In Latin American cultures (if you will allow me widely generalize), it is only the receptive partner in the passionate throws of male homosexual congress that is looked down upon. this has more to do with cultural attitudes towards machismo and strength than any basis on reproduction or health concerns. incest to various degrees has been quite strongly banned or punished across a substantial swathe of the world throughout history, which at least strongly indicative to people from many varied cultures having a longstanding understanding of what happens when brothers and sisters get a little too close. i honestly believe the answer is that simple. as to why it remains such in the age of contraception, my answer is that you just can't count on people to behave or be rational, and whether the healthcare is publicly funded or not (and as an American, i know all about lack of public funding), we're all going to have to deal with the result.
  22. a set-up that was made to be pounced on, and so done with flawless delivery.
  23. MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  24. i've been enjoying watching that series. the rivalry and the history between the two clubs definitely adds to it.
