With All Due Respect

After all these years (far too many) why does the depth of the media's Old Firm (that’s the duo comprising the second oldest professional team in Glasgow & Sevco) obsession still surprise me?

Actually, “surprise” is the wrong word since there is no surprise, just irritation.

I’ve just read in today’s Herald, an 800-word obituary on that Ibrox legend – Albert Franks.

No, I’ve never heard of him either and nor, I suspect, will many of those who follow the youngest professional football team in our city.

While I do subscribe to the view that any man’s death diminishes me, and I sympathise with the Franks’ family at their loss, just how stellar was this man’s career in Govan to merit such recognition?

Signed in March 1960, he made just three - not three hundred, nor even thirty – but three appearances for the club.

Two defeats at home to Motherwell and the late lamented Third Lanark, and an away defeat at Shawfield.

Hardly a Hall of Fame candidate, though with a longevity which would have been envied by the late Daniel Prodan!

Still, he signed for one of the Gruesome Twosome, so obviously well worthy of such recognition!
