  1. There were 3 games v Hearts in 93/94. Law played in all 3, but Britton only once. Looks like him behind Jamieson. So... 23 October 1993. [That date rings a bell somehow.] 0-0. Thistle: Nelson, Law, Milne, Watson, Jamieson, Taylor, Shaw, Craig, Grant, Britton, Cameron. (English.) Hearts: Walker, McLaren, McKinlay, Levein, Hogg, Weir, MacKay, Leitch, Colquhoun, Johnston, Johnston. Ref: Mr Bonkle from Dallas.
  2. Think it could be St Mirren at Love St. Don't know the Thistle players but the defender looks like Jim Clunie.
  3. All valid points and probably no single answer. Just produced the statistics to stimulate debate. You'd need a GCHQ computer to factor in all the snags mentioned.
  4. Yep. Sorry for the typo. Have amended.
  5. In no particular order here are the % W, D and L records of most club managers. All competitions and friendlies. Auld/Lambie refer to both/all spells with the club. McNamara 47 21 32 McCall 40 23 37 Campbell 40 25 35 Lambie 40 28 32 Auld 42 26 32 Whyte/Britton 32 20 58 Bryce 41 14 45 McVeigh 21 28 51 McLeod 32 24 44 Clark 12 35 53 McParland 39 27 34 Cormack 39 23 38 Rooney 26 29 45 Johnstone 24 30 46 Haggart 25 38 37 Lamont 36 21 43 Easton 37 23 40 Meiklejohn 43 19 38 Thornton 38 21 41 Symon 20 24 56 Purely statistically...... The" worst" manager(s) with 58% of matches lost were Whyte/Britton with 58% followed by Symon (56%) and Clark (53%). The "best" is McNamara with 47% of matches won followed by Meiklejohn (43%) and Auld (42%). If anyone is wondering if a committee could do better, covering around 880 games before George Easton was appointed, the figures are 49 13 38.
  6. Looks like Gordon Whitelaw. Previous looks like Hearts at Tynecastle. Jimmy Davidson, Tommy Ledgerwood and Joe Hogan? Most likely 18 October 1958 (0-2).
  7. Exactly. Let's have some bold broad stripes (or hoops) of red and yellow in equal proportions. No more of this candy stripe stuff that looks like yellow on its own from any sort of distance.
  8. Yes. SPFL rules state that the team finishing 11th will play the second leg at home - although it didn't help Hibs last season.
  9. 5. 2 in the Semi-Final against St Johnstone and 3 in the Final against Airduree.
  10. In the interests of industrial accuracy, they were a foundry, not fabricators. The cupola air vent sticking up is typical of a foundry. Still on nostalgia (if you can get nostalgic about a foundry), anyone remember the swans from the canal that used to appear during games? Like the Firhill lum, they were supposed to be good luck. Probably a flawed memory but they always seemed to fly the length of the pitch up the middle, never across the park.
  11. "The versatile......" "The experienced......" ie, mediocre in any position.
  12. Bank of England inflation calculator suggests (averaged at 4%) £3000 = around £119,000.
  13. Any language (according to the Radio Times at least) where the days of the week all begin with the letter "D" deserves to be treated with caution.
  14. Looks to me like Danny Kellachan on the line looking straight into the camera. Rough on the ground. Don't recognise anyone else.
  15. You may be right about Smith. I don't have a 100% record!
  16. McQuade only played once at home to QP so looks like it can only be Queen's Park at Firhill on April 19 1970. 2-1. Dennis McQuade and John Hansen in the background. Rough, Hansen Gray, Smith, McKinnon, Strachan, McQUADE, Coulston, Bone, Rae, LAWRIE. (Forsyth.) Interesting that QP were the only club "permitted" to have their shirts not tucked in their shorts (their tradition). Indeed, didn't refs make players tuck them in? Nowadays the shirts are so tight and short they've given up.
  17. For those of us that can't juggle a pie, a Bovril and reading glasses at the same time, can the serial numbers on the tickets be Bold, Bigger font, Black. Preferably all 3.
  18. I think it is custom and practice that when a team is attacking, the assistant ref is always on the ref's right hand side touchline. Seems to be standard across all countries nowadays. The "senior" assistant takes the "main stand side" - more experienced to deal with the agro - but I suppose this is less crucial with the advent of the 4th official. Can anyone else confirm that for many years the situation in English football was reversed ie, the assistant was always on the ref's left hand side? Also,I seem to recall that for friendlies at the start of the season even in Scotland the assistants would occasionally run the line to the ref's left hand side to keep the strip of grass that would take a battering during the season "good"? I
  19. The guy in front of me in the queue at Tannadice a couple of weeks ago was frisked by a steward as we approached the turnstile. I was curious and thought about posting at the time whether any budding lawyers on here know if a bloke in a high viz vest has the legal right to do this. If so, under what authority? (I can't recall if the steward asked if the guy agreed to being searched.) If the "friskee" refuses, what happens next?
  20. If the SPFL website is correct... the figures are surprising to say the least - in fact they hardly seem credible. It must be something to do with the size of the stadium, surrounding tracks etc that fools the eye. The LONGEST playing surface in Scotland is Peterhead. 105.9 metres but I wonder why, of 42 clubs, Peterhead's is the only one listed with a decimal point. They are followed by 17 clubs @ 105 metres. The WIDEST playing surface in Scotland goes to 4 clubs ie, PTFC, Alloa, Dumbarton and East Fife all @ 69 Metres. The BIGGEST AREA is shared by PTFC and East Fife - both 105 x 69. Peterhead is only 64 metres wide. Ibrox, Celtic Park and Hampden are all 105 x 68. Cowdenbeath is the shortest in Scotland @ 98 metres. It is also the narrowest @ 60 metres followed by Brechin (61) and Annan (62). As I say, hard to believe.
  21. Thanks to everyone who replied.
  22. Can any collectors out there help? Trying to find out if there were programmes issued for two Thistle home games, ie, 10 March 1987 v Celtic in Glasgow cup and 10 Jan 2009 v Inverness in Scottish Cup. No point is trying to fill gaps in my collection if they don't exist! Thanks.
