  1. Thanks. My first game was 1959 but just a baby then....In all the pics I've seen of Firhill I've never seen that wall.
  2. This pic from a selection of celtic pics is baffling me.....is this 1940's or early 50's?? Either way....was there ever a big wall behind the goals? I thought this may be an away game against Moton or something but the pic says Celtic pics.....so it must be Firhill against Celtic ?? Does anyone remember this? Maybe Jimmy Davidson (left of centre)? But who am I to say as it was before my time. Talking of the big wall...I always loved the wall under the shed as it gave the ground a bit of character that was unmistakingly Firhill. Don't know if any other grounds had this (maybe Turf Moor) OOffff...just noticed......the thistle goalie boots the guy in the RS MCalls.......
  3. Second pic I can see McParland Cunningham Niven and in the distance is that John Divers? And Donnie of course. Wille C used to get called Twiggy I remember.
  4. On the way out of Thistle game around 1962 he interviewed my granny on her way out....as I was only 3 or 4 at the time I think I remember it was about women coming to matches. I got home to Oakbank Terrace after the game and I'm sure I saw it on the telly on the early programme. He had that big mike that covered half his face. Very polite man. 'John Hansen is right out the game!' RIP Big man.
  5. I went to a game at Shawfield (on my own as usual) Ian Jardine, Donald Park days...maybe 82 or 83....I was goin for a pee when we attacked....there was a bit of a stramash in the goalmouth and it ended with possibly Jardine hammerin the ball into the net...3- 1 to the Jags!! Everybody was cheerin and I nipped in for a pee. Heard another cheer when was in there...thought nothin of it....the game ended...and I walked it from Shawfield to Calderpark Zoo to get the bus back...obviously got an oportunity to speak to anyone...and when I got home to Whitburn there wasnae exactly scores of Jags fans about to discuss the game wi. Wife asked what the score was and I said we won 3-1....next day the Sunday Mail...I couldnae believe it.....Clyde 1 Thistle 2....so am rantin on to ma wife...that's no real...it was 3-1 to us and the report says 2-1 !!! After most of the morning rantin I said..right am gonni phone them.... don't know what planet I was on The guy at the Sunday Mail sports desk picks up the phone..Hi, it was just to point out that you have the Thistle score as 2-1 but it was 3-1 ' It was 2-1' ....I was there...it was 3-1...Ian Jardine scored the third...... .'It was 2-1...it was given as offside ;.....after a split second of silence...I put the phone down....
  6. For what it's worth....and I know things have changed a lot....but I remember at least 2 games at Firhill against Rangers in the 70's under Bertie.....Rangers ran out first and were out for feckn ages before Bertie allowed Thistle to come out.....I remember I thought in some way he was sayin....fk them, let them wait.....in both cases we humped them.
  7. Have to say Balatoni was excellent yesterday. Credit where it's due....he never has a bad game against Graham...won every header I think. Man of the match could've been him, O'Donnell, Lawless or McMillan. St J did what they did at Firhill last season...but don't have May up front so are now like Ross C. We missed Higgy and Fraser.....Stevenson may well have been worth a punt in the second half...for something different because what we had wasn't goin to amount to anything. Only chink of light was Lawless and some cool chipped passing from Osman. If we can't create a chance against a nine man defence we need to get Accies mentaillty for the next 2 or 3 games. We are not playing badly and no one yesterday was suffering from lack of confidence. Praying for the quick return of Higgy Fraser and Welsh.
  8. IMHO....Accies seemed to win most 50-50 balls and never gave us space. We shoulda put 11 men behind the ball after we scored....and we we should have fn concentrated when we scored with the mentality it was still 0-0. To be honest it was always on the cards - they looked more dangerous than we ever did. It's so hard to take after possibly the best goal I've ever seen at Firhill. If we were to win today we would have had to win ugly. Don't know if we can do that. It's only one game but we have to play with more determination....like Accies did.
  9. Just as good as Ronnie and shoulda got a Scotland cap but Ronnie played for Rangers and so wee bro had no chance. I remember his goal too...the winner v Hibs on a sunny day....magic.
  10. No fixed it for me naw....why would he want the goalie sent off? This was was before Fox slapped him so why was he yappin? Anyway it's no gonni keep me awake at night...just wonderin that was aw.
  11. I might have missed something....but, ref gives a penalty...Seaborne gets booked....so they have penalty...so why does McGowan need to get involved after the decisions get made? What else did he want at that point?
  12. Thanks....that was great to watch. My top 10 moments would have included Gall's penalty save against Aberdeen and the incredible scoop away from the Killie player as he tried to follow up Gardyne's shot off the bar).
  13. No...please not Thomson.....canny even think of one thing he contributes to a team. Speakin to Hibees pals and they aw think McPake is useless. Wouldnae take any of em. (The keeper is good....but we have cover there).
  14. Although I agree with the most of what was said about lack of effort I have to say that what struck me was that there were many players who either had a bad day or simply weren't allowed to play after about 25 30 mins when Hearts steadied themselves. I think our players maybe thought it was gonna be a stroll and by the time we kicked ourselves up the arse it was 2-1 and we couldn't stop the tide. Looked like the players were shell shocked. Like me. Fair play to Hearts...there weren't may stray passes from them. And..they gave us no time on the ball....whereas we gave them space. We have to be quicker on to opposing players. I found that part the hardest to take today. I wonder what Moncur could bring and I dont get the Higgy for Bauben change. Ok Higgy wasnt on form today but I thought we should have persevered. By the way....our defence gies me the heebees when cross balls come in.
  15. From the Oldham Athletic Fans Forum just copy and past this link http://www.owtb.co.u...s-latics-forum/ Under the heading of 'Already Left' The moral of the story is for all fans is.....Keep The Faith The reason it struck a chord with me was I have left earlyish on a couple of occasions and missed equalisers/winners. This guy left at half time with the score Oldham 0 Posh 3 Other quotes on other topics include: Harkins is the Scottish Zidane Harkins was majestic
  16. re Galls kickouts....I thought his options weren't as great because St Johnstone picked up our players up quickly and so he had no option but to kick. Dont get though why goalies kick it high instead of just long. As for Saints I dididnt see a stray Saints pass all night. PS I'd have Doolan and Taylor on from the start. It look good when those 2 and Erskine worked together.
  17. I read he was coming back...!! And I thought....right I'll get a couple of scratch cards on ma way home coz Im feelin lucky. Parked the card....got a coin out ma pocket.... first card......sh&t....nuthin second card......sh&t.....nowt wait for it......3rd card Fu*k all..!! Still he's back.....who cares.......mon the Jags!!!! Be there wi bells on the morra...lookin for a 25,000 crowd!!!.....
  18. So sad to hear of the death of the blonde goddess.....she was a choice piece of ass. They used to do pics of delicious ladies in the Daily Record in the late 60's and early 70's before topless models....they would pose sitting with their mini skirts no shoes etc...there was one of her and when I was a little boy I was smitten with her....had a fetish for American Tan tights ever since! And what a great name she had too. RIP Alexandra.
  19. Not Thomson.....please no. No goal threat....passes sideways...no defence splitting passes....no spark, nothing better than what we've got. I'm struggling to think of anything he could give......having a cool head and can maybe tackle....that's about it. But that's not enough. A poor man's Barry Ferguson.
  20. I was exasperated....but to be honest mostly because Saints played most of the game with 9 men behind the ball and it was difficult to find space. The players tried...Bannigan wasnt as usless as some people had made out....I thought he wanted the ball all of the time and wanted to go forward....best I've saw him in a while. Fraser woulda helped if he hadnt fkd up and Forbes is a definite option...even if he does look disinterested.Saints were less than ordinary....canny mind them stringing more than 3 passes together for most of the game...it's hard to take. the killer ball was difficult to make as they had so many bodies in the way. I dont wanna say any more coz im fkn ragin and gutted again.
  21. Thanks stuthejag! Cyprusjag....yeah he is an islander. Wished I had seen him in action.
  22. My dad was always taking about Johnny McKenzie and Jimmy Davidson amongst others. Here's some footage....fist time I've saw McKenzie in action....he looks like a whippet. And a photie of Jimmy Davidson...far right. Legend has it that these 2 were superb on the day. We lost 2-4. Some great names Ring Haddock Wardhaugh Reilly Johnston McKenzie Davidson Docherty I wasnae born but heard some great stories about these two Thistle players and wanted to see what they actually looked like. First time I've done this and It doesnae seem to work....so just copy and paste the links. Or look up Scotland v Hungary 1954 and you'll get it. Jeez what a dope.
  23. A few weeks back when I saw him for the first time against Aberdeen I wasn't sure what he would bring as most of the guys are creative and I wanted another creative player in the team. But I take it back....he's been superb..
  24. Was there wi ma dad and wee brother...my 2 grandpas and uncles were there...like someone said earlier most have now passed away. But glad they saw us winning a major. I was only 12....when they scored the 4th I was jumping up and down and shouted ya fkn beauty...first time I swore in front of ma Da. Coming a close second was the 3-2 win against the h*ns at Firhill...3-1 at half-time. I remember phoning the BBC a few years back and asking if they had radio commentary of these 2 1971 games I could buy. They said yes,,,it would cost about £40-50 quid each....but I never followed it up. I think i will phone them again and see if they're still available. Johhny Gibson was amazin in the 3-2 game and they kicked him off the park and he had to be subbed.it was a sunny day and I remember someone died at the game wi a heart attack...it was an amazing game. When Johnny G came on in the cup final he was takin the piss up near the corner flag playin out till the final whistle. Have the photos on my desk at work of the 4 goals. Does anyone know if prints of these are available?... as i was thinkin of gettn them blown up into bigger pics for the hoose.
  25. Johnny was my first real hero as a wee boy...to this day I can recite that team off by heart... Niven Campbell and Muir O'Neill McKinnon and Gibb Rae McParland Coulston Flanagan and Duncan Substitute Bone I remember the 3-3 game at Firhill against Celtic and the crush gettn out afterwards. We were 3-1 down with 10 mins to go...all our goals scored by Johnny and Jimmy Bone. I always thrived to be that kind of player when a journalist described Johnny as 'quicksilver'. Gutted when he went to Clyde...like Dougie Somner going to St Mirren. RIP Johnny and thanks for the memories.
