Christ_Puncher
what are all these student neds about rioting? Did they not learn from the suffragettes that acting like an idiot gets you nowhere? People will won't look at your reason for rioting, only the riot. The govt. are never going to bend to hooligans. Anyway, i don't see their bloody point, moaning about tuition fees. They think the world owes them a living. I had to pay for my education so i don't see whats wrong with them doing it. If they don't like it they can get an apprenticeship or other jobs. Time served apprentices are well paid. Personally I'd send the army in to crush them, like at Tiannamen Square. Blackpool Jags
Credit to the students who protested again yesterday: (largely) tomorrow's working class. Over the past two and a half decades, we, as a class, have become too fat and slobby as regards standing up against the political machinery that expects Joe Bloggs to pay for their mess, in the form of cuts to jobs, services and pay & conditions. It was only going to be a matter of time before the captains of industry and finance would make us pay for THEIR crisis. Additional tuition fees are only one facet of the havoc the Tory-led government coalition have in store for us. It's time for organised labour (small l) learned to fight back as we once did, admirably, in the days before plasma TVs and cheap kerry-oots. Last night saw a massive presence of Trade Unionists from across the employment spectrum in Blackpool gather outside the Town Hall (then inside) to protest against the 1,000 redundancies (out of just over 4,000 staff) about to be implemented by the shameless Tory-led council in Blackpool. This, I feel, is the beginning of something we've not seen properly since the early 1980s.

Meister Jag
Funny how when the country was poorer than it is now that we could afford free higher education. Because of problems that were not of their making - nor of our making, we cannot afford to give our children the benefits of an education that is aimed at bettering society as a whole. But take it as read that those who have will still be able to send their weans to their top uni of choice. Once this crowd have had their fun any notion of a truly "classless society" will have disappeared. I find it strange that this government, and in truth also the last, fails to see that today's students are tomorrow's high tax payers. Possibly also tomorrow's innovators and wealth creators. But to return to my earlier point, fewer kids from humble origins will be given that or any opportunity to better their lives. This is obviously a personal opinion that will no doubt irritate those on this DG who think all students are just a waste of space; and I know this thread was probably started as a wind-up to entice the likes of me away from the telly and onto my keyboard. Well, guess what it worked... To see student's burdened with debt the size of a small underdeveloped country is shocking and I for one feel badly let down by government. Isn't it funny that when going to war Gordon Brown said we'd spend "whatever it takes" to win! Yip folks, it's pay back time and future generations are having to carry the can. Let's be honest, nothing that was ever won by the working class was ever won without struggle; so it's here we go again time. All of which is really a sad indictment on the country as a whole and on the values of the current parties of government - the conservatives and their little helpers. sigesige00
In Scotland, the sectarianism in education must be abolished immediately. And, the aim of education must be the full development of the humankind with reason (philosophical reason, I mean) and creativity in labour. The present education is designed for the production of alienated workers who are ruled and exploited. After the abolition of capitalism, there would be no necessity for degrees, and people can freely study what they want, and can become persons with reason. That is the aim of education. B.C.G. JAG
There's a story doing the rounds that the Police deliberately abandoned that rusty old van right in the path of the oncoming demo and refused to remove it despite the requests of the organisers, giving them a excuse to start the kettle, as it were. Having seen the METs tactics in action before, this really wouldn't surprise me if it was true. The media have to also take some responsibility here. If they only deem a demonstration worthy of reporting if there is destruction of property then guess what, that's what will happen. The best part of this has been how the cops are using it as platform to oppose cuts to their own ranks. The irony is delicious. Well done the Students, it's good to see the fightback has started and I hope they keep the action up. We should all be swelling their numbers.
