Norgethistle
Yes thats right tax the poor who live in a wally close, leave them with just £55 per week to live on, im sure there are having a ball and living a life of opulence! Just like the poor woman who commited suicide because she could not afford to pay the tax. You sad little man! Tax everyone the same level after the threshold, then its fair, otherwise its classed as unfair, again why should some one who has worked hard all their days, went to night school etc to move up in the world have to pay a higher level of tax??
Guy Incognito
Tax everyone the same level after the threshold, then its fair, otherwise its classed as unfair, again why should some one who has worked hard all their days, went to night school etc to move up in the world have to pay a higher level of tax?? A flat rate of income tax would disproportionately affect people in lower paid jobs though. It would also disincentivize people from finding work in the first place, as folk will be less inclined to take up jobs if the difference between net pay and what they could get on state benefits is only negligible. Thus, we find people mired in that pet hate of the right: benefit culture. A way around that scenario could be to increase the minimum wage and/or raise the personal tax allowance. But 35% for someone at the bottom end of the wage scale is still far too high, IMO. Of course, everyone should pay tax. But not everyone has the aptitude or the opportunity to gain the qualifications necessary to secure a higher paid job. That doesn't necessarily make them bad people or completely useless to society though. I think it is right that everyone chips in, but I also think it is right that everyone contributes what they are able to.
DPO
no she had other mental issues and had been offered help and alternative housing. oh it is not a tax. so you want to drag every one down to the lowest level? Mental health issues or not, why should anyone have to move to alternative housing? Ian Duncan Smith lives rent free in a £2million country house with four spare bedrooms, while he forces people in social housing to pay £15 per week if they have a spare bedroom, do you think its right ? Many people/familes will struggle it can't be easy having to live on £55 per week, have some compassion and stop bashing the poor and unemployed. Oh and its not a tax, call it what you like, its punishing the poor. disabled and unemployed, this unelected government are destroying millions of people lives, they are evil heartless C**TS! I don't know if you are a Tory probably Lib Dem, but im hoping they are other Thistle fans who are against this Government?

Ian Duncan Smith lives rent free in a £2million country house with four spare bedrooms, while he forces people in social housing to pay £15 per week if they have a spare bedroom, do you think its right ? so you want people who need a 3 bedroom house to stay in a one or two bedroom house whilst people who only need a one bedroom live in those three bedroom houses?? a house that come with the job and loses when he goes which you get with a few jobs. Many people/familes will struggle it can't be easy having to live on £55 per week, have some compassion and stop bashing the poor and unemployed. i don't bash the poor and unemployed i bash the lasy shites who cant be arsed to even try and are happy to take every hand out there is Oh and its not a tax, call it what you like, its punishing the poor. disabled and unemployed, this unelected government are destroying millions of people lives, they are evil heartless C**TS! the council have been given extra money to help those that require it so what's the problem. we need to build more homes but that wont work as it would crash the housing market with people going into negative equity I don't know if you are a Tory probably Lib Dem, but im hoping they are other Thistle fans who are against this Government? yes i am a Tory a poor Tory but one none the less but i cant be as bad as all the champagne socialists out there (you know who you are ) . and i have been unemployed and it wasn't nice but it didn't stop me trying my best to get jobs and that all i want from anyone
twinny
This seems pretty relevant here. Full story. Tories love a good myth, particularly if it demonises people who are poor as if it is their own fault. While searching for it I also found this showing the degree to which the Tory supporting papers love demonising those receiving benefits, and perhaps how the Guardian comes a little the other way. Either way, there are far better targets for saving money and reducing the deficit that don't involve an ideological attack on those least able to support themselves. DPO
and i have been unemployed and it wasn't nice but it didn't stop me trying my best to get jobs and that all i want from anyone I was wondering when you would rear your ugly Nazi Tory heed, first of all im not a Socialist, i don't belong to any political party as they are all greedy lying ******** who are only out to line their own pockets. Not all unemployed are lazy shites as you put it, most people who are working recieve benefits, ie family tax, working tax credits and family allowance, you can't say all unemployed are lazy and are happy living on £55-£70 a week, would you be happy living on that? You talk about someone giving up their home, lets say a couple divorce, it happens, the wife moves out and the man has 2 bedrooms, he has access to his 2 kids 3 times a week, now if he moves to a 1 bedroom flat where does his 2 kids sleep? If the man is working he does not need to worry he won't have to move to a 1 bedroom flat, its about punishing the poor and disabled and where are all these 1 bedroom flats? its cheaper to build 2 bedroom flats. Are you really a Tory or taking the piss, how many Tory Thistle fans are they exactly, im sure you will know?

Are you really a Tory or taking the piss, how many Tory Thistle fans are they exactly, im sure you will know? Good post but, in fairness, I don't think the good comrade is a Nazi; just a gin-soaked old wannabe socialist. Don't tell, but the ITV drama The Americans is actaully based on him and his missus. They were trained by the KGB and then parachuted (big parachute by the way) into West Lothian in the 1950's. Problem is that there's not much to report back on what the capitalist scum are up to in sunny Penicuik. Jaggy developed a certain decadent lifestyle and hasn't looked back; or even bothered to send messages tied to one of his pigeon's legs. Jaggy, you've been outed mate. Why not just come clean and stop hiding behind your Empire Loyalist disguise. In terms of Tories on the forum, I'd guess there are one or two but surely their entitled to their opinion? Even if we may not agree with what they say? I mean, there are a few on here who are clearly left-leaning and even we rarely agree with each other. Which probably explains why there is no united left anymore. (Take a look at past threads when Sheridan's name is mentioned!) In truth, I'd be more concerned about the odd neo-liberal who punts stuff on the forum; and yes, there are one or two. Not old-school liberals who appear quite passionate about what they belive in, I'm talking about the ones who see the need for cuts in welfare and who believe that if benefits are slashed this will lead to people having to drop their walking sticks and start sprinting in a race towards zero hour contracts. Some forward-thinking socially-minded employers are actually offering such enticements! Known as "well haud me back" contracts. As James Joyce said of Jesus: "Come forth Lazurus... he came fifth, and lost the job". This mob (probably the wrong collective noun, maybe a pairing of pricks?) see great wisdom in all forms of austerity cuts and see no problem with (legal though immoral) tax avoidance. They are the ones who should be attacked, not the Penicuik Patriot. IMO of course. Edited June 7, 2013 by Meister Jag

I think it is right that everyone chips in, but I also think it is right that everyone contributes what they are able to. 35% was a ball park figure but NI and Income tax isn't far off it, so say 30% the key is setting the threshold level so that it encourages people to take a job instead of falling into the dilemma of having more with benefits than getting on the job ladder (And it does happen), perhaps the threshold is too low, the same should be for businesses anything above a set threshold should be taxed, with no dodgy deals to earn the money in the country and pay tax else where. MP's should only get the wage they were on in the job they had before they went to parliament (this will stop all the career MP's who have never worked and have no idea of the real world), with a 1 bedroom flat that is rented for them, bus pass and rail ticket to get home at the weekend, plus a daily sensible food allowance for buying food from supermarket., it should be classed as a service to the constituency like jury duty, not a get rich quick scheme. Standard tax for all ABOVE THE THRESHOLD so if you work more you earn more and so does the government, but its level, transparent and, if the threshold is set right fair
