Floodlights

arriving at firhill on saturday afternoon, my eyes were drawn to the floodlights burning fiercely against the grey, winter sky. it is a sight that never fails to quicken the senses.

my mind went back to an october night in 1961 when my late father and i walked over to hampden for the official opening of the stadium's magnicent four towers - the glow from which could be seen from miles away.

a crowd of over 100,000 watched eintracht frankfurt beat rangers (3-1 if memory serves) but the star of the show was that wonderful lighting that turned night into shimmering day.

wouldn't it be wonderful if our firhill lights would again illuminate european opposition in the not too distant future?

Great pic. Looks like Spartak Brno the opposition. Now called FC Zbrovjovka Brno. My neighbour's son - jags fan of course- worked in Brno for a year. He never met anyone who remember their European match against Partick Thistle. Maybe just as well

if you google martin ferguson there's an article in the thistle archive (i think know the writer vaguely...) that throws much light on our venture into europe. sorry, but don't know how tpo provide a link!
