I am sorry to announce that this announcement is delayed by approximately 25 minutes, please wait for further announcements.

In the interest of safety customers are reminded that these bi-minutely announcements will drive you insane.

Scotfail.

Try travelling with Northern trains, their info service is pish poor and charge you to get updates to your phone

The announcements are automatic and thanks to squire and TS they cant be switched off

Anybody see Newnicht last night and one of the most stupid performances by an interviewer (Gordon Brewster) that I think I've ever seen? John Swinney apologized for everybody's inconvenience and gave a perfectly lucid and reasoned account of what happened on the M8: two lorries jacknifed and so blocked access, after which much more snow than anybody anticipated fell and froze, and with all the traffic jamming up, it simply got worse and worse. Nobody's fault (except maybe for everybody in a car or van who knew that conditions might be hazardous). A classic "act of God" if ever there was one, yet all the interviewer wanted was somebody to blame, demanding that the Transport Minister had to be sacked etc etc.

Terrible stuff.

Indeed. Its perfectly reasonable in the 21st century for it to take two days to melt some frozen water on the busiest road in Scotland.

All very useful, many thanks. Tried to make it to Glasgow from Stirling by train this morning, but impossible to do so anywhere near the time I needed to be there.

It's a mild morning by any winter standards, yet still absolute chaos on the railways. What an embarrassment for a so-called developed country.

Scotrail are an utter joke. Took me nearly 90 mins to get into town today to discover they had a queuing system for the Edinburgh trains which was snaking its way to George Sq. Decided to head back to Westerton , went to lower level told that trains were running to there and one due in 5 mins. Yeah right. 2 hours later I got home via an underground trip to Partick which felt like it was a Sunday and another 45 mins wait at Partick

First Bus arent much better since we are pretty much cut off now if you dont drive.

How come other countries can cope with this weather but as soon as it happens the whole infrastructure just falls apart around us :(

The main problem the units are having is frozen brakes, as they are air flow brakes

With the snow on the tracks there is still risk of points failing as the snow drops into the blades when they shift, then when the blades shift back it compacts the snow and keeps doing this until the points stop mid flow, then the race is on to get NR to the failure, and that is a problem in itself, as they may be mioles away and given the state of the roads the respons time may be a lot longer

As for the queueing system, they are putting so many onto each set as they still have to pick up at the intermediate stations, IMHO they should keep it 4 an hour and run express to haymarket only as well as the all stops, but then again thats using your brain and we all know senior managers arent paid to do this, they hide in warm offices as the station staff take all the shit

According to one of the papers yesterday or the day before, our trains are the cheapest option, in other words designed to work in Mediterranean types of climate, rather than in climates with regular freezing temperatures and snow. One thing is certain: whether it's leaves, snow, or ice; the equipment just isn't up to the job.

Depends on what paper and whether it was the whole of the UK, the english have some howling sets....class 140/141/142/144 and the bubble car 153s, altho some of the trains were built decades ago so possibly not properly set up for this severe weather.

Trains in ScotRail Network

Electrics

314 - 1979, built in UK, the grandaddy of the fleet

318 - 1985, built in UK, introduced when the ayr lines got electrified

334 - 2001, built in France - these are unreliable due to being french!!

380 - 2010, built in Germany, tested in the black forest, so hopefully once the issues are resolved may be a lot better than 334s

Diesels

156 - 1987, built in UK, the mainstay of the diesel fleet

158 - 1989, built in UK, not bad, an upgrade of the 156s

170 - 1998, built in UK by bombardier.

Problems with diesel freezing, brakes freezing etc are a pain in the @rse

Personally i hate the 334s as they are so cr@p, also i think the 156s would severely need an overhaul with improved heating and full sealed windows like the 158s/170s, which may make them warmer
