ian_mac
Did Danny Lennon really say “Well Chick, at least ONE of your teams has won a cup this season”? Or did I dream it? He said it! I listened to the sportsound podcast today and it's on that! Best thing I've ever downloaded!
Mojo4171
Not sure how much truth is in that, but - certainly in the '60s, and, I'm fairly sure, into the '70s - it was known as the 'Inter Cities Fairs Cup, or something very like that. The idea was that only so many teams from the same city could enter it, and I think that might've related to the number of teams gaining automatic qualification for the other two big Euro competitions of the day too, by which I mean that if you already had more than one team in the other two then they were looking for a club from a different city / town from your country for the ICFC. So, assuming the Tims were in the European Cup, and sevco's predecessor outfit was in the Cup Winners' Cup, then UEFA might've been a bit fidgety about a third Glasgow club competing, albeit in their ICF Cup. If it's true that the SFA had to intervene on our behalf, then it's likely that they would've cited our excellent league position of that season as strong supporting evidence of why we should be admitted to the competition. A lot of guesswork there, of course, but would've made sense.
Mojo4171
In the sixties teams played in three competitions..... League Champions ....European Cup Runners up ....Inter Cities Fair Cup Scottish Cup winners...European Cup Winners Cup. In Season 62/63 Jags finished third behind Rangers and Kilmarnock. Kilmarnock decided not to play in Europe but opted for a tournament in New York leaving the way for the Jags. By 1971 the fair cities had gone and following our win the SFA successfully portioned for us to play in the EUFA cup
jagfox
At the start of the Inter-city Fairs cup I think some city representative selections took part e.g. Birmingham rather than one club team?

Clyde finished third in 66-67 and in any other season would have competed in the ICFC, but UEFA refused them entry on the basis of pre-sevco's participation, as Clyde were deemed to be from the same city. I read about that recently. Didn't they argue they were from Rutherglen which was seperate to Glasgow at the time, but then their membership of the Glasgow FA and participation in the Glasgow Cup were cited. Yes, as you say - hence the 'deemed to be from the same city' ruling.
