  1. I've no way of knowing if this is true or not but many years ago and old Thistle fan from the north of Scotland told me that a match in Elgin (?) in the 20s (or earlier) was played in thick fog. He told me that the home and away dressing rooms were at either end of the pitch. Both teams came out to warm up and when the ref blew his whistle for the captains to come to the centre circle it was only then that he saw the teams were wearing identical strips.
  2. Just by coincidence I found the report of the Thistle v Dundee United match in October 1977. There was a lot of giving the ball away in the first half because the red and yellow clashed with United's tangerine. A change of strip to sky blue was ordered by Auld at half-time and the rest is history...a 2-1 win with Somner and Melrose getting the goals.
  3. Once saw Cliff Hanley and Robin Hall standing on the terracing roughly where the North Stand and the JHS meet, finishing off a bottle of champagne between them but generally a bit suspicious about all these so-called celebrity fan stories. Has anyone actually seen any of them at matches? Or is it just "fashionable" to say you support Thistle if you're in the media/film/TV etc ? Anyone remember Buster Bloodvessel? We're the real fans.
  4. IF it's Morton away, IF the Morton player is Roddy Hutchison, IF It's Whittaker half-hidden with Rough, Campbell and Anderson then it looks like 1 of 3... 29 Dec 1979 (3-1) 2 April 1980 (0-1) 27 Dec 1980 (0-2) The match in April was a Wednesday night so I suppose the lights might have been on but probably one of the other two.
  5. Doesn't look like Niven to me - but it happy to stand corrected. He played twice with McKinnon at Parkhead..... 7 Nov 1966 Glasgow Cup (0-4) 3 Feb 1968 League (1-4) Lennox played in both games (No 10 in the first and No 11 in the second but can't make out his number). Since the Glasgow cup-tie was played under floodlights, it leaves the 3 Feb game. Niven, Campbell, Muir, O'NEILL, McKinnon, Gibb, Rae Roxburgh, Coulston, Flanagan, Gallagher.
  6. Donnie McKinnon who played in 9 games at Parkhead. The keeper was more difficult. Eliminate Ritchie and Niven leaves only 3. Looks like Bobby Lennox for Celtic and because he only played in 1 of these 3 it makes it 17 Dec 1966 - making the keeper McFedris. Not a happy score line. 2-6. McFedris, Tinney, Muir, GIBB, McKinnon, Cunningham, McLindon, McParland, Divers, Flanagan, DUNCAN. (T Rae)
  7. I once caught an episode of Taggart in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. It hadn't even been shown in Scotland at that point. In one scene two guys beat up a man in a marina (filmed in Troon) and he died. They were arrested on suspicion of murder but were later released because he had died of natural causes. "We wur only knockin' him aboot a bit an' he flaked oot oan us". Later on a new suspect was identified and Burke told Robbie to "pull him in fur a chin-wag". Whatever TV sub-title translators are paid, they're worth every Euro!
  8. One of them is presumably J R Smith who guested from Millwall in 1942-43.
  9. No takers for this? No wonder! Thinking:- Not Firhill. Winter (no leaves). Most likely a Scottish Cup tie (just because a photographer was there). Must be post 1935 (red and yellow). Pre-war (just the styles). Opposition playing in solid coloured jersey (blue?) and white shorts and hooped socks so discounted QOS (36), Ayr United and Morton (37) and Stranraer (38). Only leaves Cowdenbeath 21 Jan 1939 (3-3). Take your pick from McSpadyen, Wallace or McKennan.
  10. Looks like 16 Feb 1970 (1-5). Ritchie, Reid, Holt, Clark, Gray, Johnston, RAE, Smith, Flanagan, Bone, Lawrie. (Hansen) Williams, Craig, Gemmell, Brogan, McNeill, Hay, Johnstone, Hood, Wallace, Lennox, Hughes. (Macari)
  11. You can have scouts at every game in England every Saturday and they could be the best spotters of talent in the history of the game. In the end, it doesn't matter if you don't have enough money to offer decent contracts. Blame the board if they believe that the absolute bottom line is that the existence of the club takes priority over everything else and that increasing the debt is not an option? Blame Maxi for exercising corporate responsibility by not blowing his budget? Blame Archie if the players he wants go somewhere else? Blame similar clubs if they can offer better contracts (even if they appear to be more poorly supported)? (Sugar Daddies don't live for ever. Anyone remember Gretna?) Blame players for moving on to better themselves (even if the published reasons are risible)? Blame fans for not buying season tickets? Blame other clubs for not having bigger travelling supports? Blame the public address system, match-day experience, the price of a pie? And on, and on, and on..... The truth is there is no single culprit; no magic bullet. We need to tough it out and hope that in another couple of years the Academy produces a crop of fine young players that we will be able to sell on (and that it is protected while things are tight).
  12. The unkindest cut of all yesterday was when I was walking up over the railway bridge and 2 County fans were taking about their player who went off injured. One of them said "I hope he's no oot for a long time. We need him for when we play good teams".
  13. Counting League, League Cup and Scottish Cup only...Thistle have drawn a blank in 1143 (25%) of 4636 matches since 1893. The match v Motherwell sees Thistle trying to avoid equalling the unenviable record of consecutive league matches without a goal. Twice since they joined the SFL (04/05 and 09/10) they have gone 5 games without a goal. Next Saturday would make that 3 times. Counting the League Cup as well means that a blank on Saturday would be 6 games. In all 3 competitions contenders for the worst barren spell are:- Mar-Aug 1969 (9 blanks/6 goals in 13 games) and Feb-Apr 2010 (9 blanks/4 goals in 11) This current spell is 9 blanks/2 goals in 10. Failure to hit the rigging at Motherwell would be 10 blanks (2 goals) in 11 and most likely be the worst ever goalless spell. C'mon lads. Don't make it happen!
  14. He was still being referred to as "Partick Thistle player Jordan McMillan" on BBC Good Morning Scotland's 6.25 sports bulletin. Their Scottish Football page is still showing "Two-year ban for Partick defender after failed drugs test".
  15. To be fair, para 116 of their findings explains that they attached no weight whatsoever to these allegations because they were unsubstantiated.
  16. There have been numerous spells of 3 consecutive league games without a goal and at least 2 occasions of 4 games - Nov-Dec 2004 and Mar-Apr 2010. The latter actually ended a run of 2 goals in 9 consecutive games - 3 blanks, 2 goals and 5 blanks. Let's hope it doesn't come to it but blanks against Ross County and Motherwell would equal 5 but it would most likely be the worst ever since it would be 2 goals in 10 consecutive league matches - 4 blanks, 2 goals and 5 blanks. The first of that sequence was the last game of 2014-15.
  17. The power of this internet thingy! Thistle programmes on the other side of the world. Many thanks for looking DCJ.
  18. Don't think that's "Big Tiny". Looks more like Hugh Philips.
  19. Yes, but thanks anyway Tom. Stumbled across the game by accident and hoping to find out the teams and some sort of brief report. Just a chance there was a mention in a subsequent programme.
  20. A long shot I know, (longer than a Jackie Husband throw-in) but I'm looking for information about a friendly match away to Morton on 14 November 1966. Does anyone have access to the next home programme(s) ie, Falkirk 26 November 1966 and/or Hearts 3 December 1966? If so, could you PM me? Thanks.
  21. I read somewhere that at one time he was the only part-time footballer in all 4 divisions in England. Think he worked in insurance.
  22. Excluding friendlies, there seem to be 2 candidates with 4 games............................ 1956/57 Raith Rovers 0-1 League Rangers 0-1 League St Mirren 0-1 League Clyde 0-0 Glasgow Cup 1999/00 Alloa 0-2 League Cup Stenhousemuir 0-1 League Albion Rovers 0-2 Challenge Cup Alloa 0-1 League There are more instances of 4 or even 5 consecutive matches but all are mid-season. 64/65 ended with 2 goalless Summer Cup ties against Dundee United (0-0 and 0-3) and 65/66 started with 3 goalless defeats League Cup ties (Dunfermline 0-0, Kilmarnock 0-2 and St Johnstone 0-1) making 5 in sequence.
  23. If only Rid Skwerr! Came across this completely by accident and pure coincidence today is the 12th.
