I actually quite enjoyed the attempt. I recall Kallum Higginbotham doing something similar at Aberdeen and it almost came off. We castigate players for doing the same thing time and again, and then we castigate them for trying something different. The alternatives were the usual diagonal punt to no tall forward players or playing it back and trying to retain possession for a while a player down.
Maybe Banzo spotted some temporary inattention or poor placement on the part of the goalkeeper and thought he might as well have a go. Then by the time he hit the shot, perhaps the goalkeeper had rectified the situation, therefore rendering the attempt futile. In the favourite expression of Michael Max, it was not the worst shot I have ever seen. At least it was on target, and if the goalkeeper had been too clever in showing off, he might have been the one embarrassed. The Orient goal against Manchester City yesterday indicates that there is no harm in having a shot from distance.
Changing the subject yesterday I can recall the much maligned Darren Brady scoring with a couple of lengthy lobs!
