Which brings to mind (to the tune of Mademoiselle from Armentieres):

Big Donnie’s the best of the two, parlez-vous!

Big Donnie’s the best of the two, parlez-vous!

Big Donnie’s the best of the two,

F*** Big Ronnie and Rangers too

Inky, dinky, parlez-vous

Classic Donnie story from the Isle of Lewis. Donnie`s mother was from Carloway and both he and Ronnie donned their shirt a few times back in the day. Shawbost is the next village and the games in those days were vintage derbies! This is from a former Carloway FC player posted today on their Facebook page in tribute to the birthday brothers.

"My favourite Donnie McKinnon story was when he refereed a Carloway v Shawbost game. I guess it would have been around 1962. We ( Carloway) were attacking and one of our guys was pulled down by the Shawbost centre half. Donnie McKinnon was so engrossed in the game he immediately shouted "penalty ref" and then realised he himself was the referee. Those of us who were near the incident burst out laughing including some of the Shawbost players. Can't remember if we scored from the penalty or not but certainly recall the incident clearly. He was a class guy as was brother Ronnie."
