The Jukebox Rebel
Jaggy factoid # 1279 Amazingly, Dundee United eliminated us from the League Cup in four consecutive years - 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990. That's never been done to us by any club, in any Cup, in all of our history. Nearest to it was Rangers putting us out of four Glasgow Cups in a row in the 1970s, but with a season gap due to the fact that no tournament was played in 1976-77. The Jukebox Rebel
Jaggy factoid # 1281 Thistle's all-time record for consecutive Cup wins came in 1975 when we won 7 Cup games in a row. All wins came in the League Cup, 6 in the section and 1 in the Quarter Final. The run included home and away victories against… Dundee United. The Sunnylaw Jag
Jukebox, you're a legend although those Dundee United Cup defeats could have been glossed over. IIRC didn't one of those defeats was during our short tenure as Gypsies at Kilbowie. Or did I just make that up. P.S. When are you going to post another song on Musical Chinese Whisper? The Jukebox Rebel
Haha, aye, a legend in my own lunchtime. Re Utd in the LC, if we win on Wednesday you’ll enjoy it even more knowing we’ve killed that stat. Sure the Kilbowie game was just a one-off wasn’t it? Floodlights going in at Firhill? 1908-09, now that was a proper gypsy season - we played our 17 home League games at 10 different stadiums. Re MCW - you post a good Jaggy factoid and I’ll post a tune
The Sunnylaw Jag
Ok it's not an interesting Jaggy factoid but it is a curiosity. For the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, it was decided to have a Glasgow Select play and English League select for some reason at Hampden. I turned up hoping to see a few Jags players but in the end only Alan Rough and Brian Whittaker played from the start with Doug Somner coming on as a sub at one point. Interestingly Dad of Steven (DOS) played as well. Glasgow won 2-1 with goals from Jardine and Dalglish. However, the strip was something else and made up from the colours of all the Glasgow teams. Which you can have a look for yourself. http://www.flickr.com/photos/umbrofootball/3272787350/
The Jukebox Rebel
^ Nice one Sunnylaw, great entry for the Jaggy trivia category. Alan Hansen and Denis McQuade also made the squad of 18 that were listed in the programme, but didn’t feature. A curiosity right enough, I must admit, I preferred the shorts to the top. I note that the "Thistle 3" mkI (Rough, Somner, Craig) all played together for Jags at Hampden in the '75 League Cup semi. Also, the "Thistle 3" mkII (Rough, Whittaker, Somner) did the same in the '78 Scottish Cup semi.
The Jukebox Rebel
No “Old” Firm in the League Cup quarters for the first time since 1959 – and Jags didn’t make it then either :-( Jaggy factoid # 712 Partck Thistle have qualified for the quarter finals of the League Cup in each of the first seven decades of the competition, 1940s to 2000s. We have yet to make that mark in the 2010s.

The Jukebox Rebel
^ Good stuff Jagscast – makes a very enjoyable change for me to read rather than write. What is it with Legoland Park? Only one win there - ever. I remember vividly our first visit – 10,000 at the game and we were going great guns, but completely froze. Then Lambie left in a cloud of mystery. Almost seems jinxed ever since. On a brighter note, 25 victories at the last time of asking on 41 grounds is positively bossy – a record any team in Scotland would be proud to have. It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest were we to win at Caledonian Stadium, it’s how we roll… … Our Ibrox record is a total shocker – 1 win in the last 56 years, dear oh dear… It was a momentous occasion for us in 1981 though – not only did we bag a rare win at the Hunnery but Mo Johnston scored his first ever League goal in the process. Amazingly, “Super Mo” scored in three Rangers games in a row that season, two of the games resulting in victories for the Jags. He’s one of an elite group of five to have scored in three games against Rangers in the same season, the others being Frank Branscombe (1912-13), Tommy Ewing (1957-58), Jimmy Bone (1969-70) and Dougie Somner (1977-78). The only other Thistle player to have scored in three consecutive games against them is Bobby Howitt, who did so across two seasons - in 1951-52 and 1952-53. Jaggy factoid # 2276 When Maurice Johnston headed in an equaliser at Ibrox on 20th March 1982 he wrote himself into the history books as the only Thistle player ever to have scored in three consecutive games against Rangers in the same season. Thistle won 2-0 at Ibrox (October), won 2-0 at Firhill (Febuary) and lost 4-1 at Ibrox (March).
The Jukebox Rebel
Hibees join our hoodoo list Following on from our strange “Dundee United in the League Cup” and “St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park” records, “Hibernian at Firhill” is the latest abnormality to give us grief. Nine competitive home games without a win versus Hibernian is second worst only to Old Rangers who, funded by borrowed funds never to be repaid, managed to remain unbeaten in their last ten games at Firhill. Thistle at Firhill - a complete Stats flip When we beat Morton back in April it was our seventh consecutive home win – a run which was sitting joint seventh in our “All Time Consecutive home League wins” table. Straight on the back of that we’ve now gone seven home League games without a win - the worst streak of its kind since a Lambie-Collins May to November run in 2003. Somewhat unbelievably, it’s actually our all-time joint 5th worst run in the category “Home League games without a win”. Whoever said it’s a funny old game needs strangled…
The Jukebox Rebel
1,000 The official number of Partick Thistle victories in the Top Flight of the SFL / SPL / SPFL competitions. The Jukebox Rebel
Here's one I prepared earlier... Top Flight Victory # 1 Sat-04-Sep-1897 Heart of Midlothian [h] W3-2 Scorers: Robert Gray, John Ferguson, Willie Paul Att: 7,000 Manager: Committee Played at: Meadowside, Partick. One of the most momentous occasions in all of Partick Thistle history. After 4 seasons of 2nd Division football we had finished as champions in 1896-97 and then had to endure the nail biting election process for promotion – by no means a formality in those days. Our new state-of-the-art ground at Meadowside no doubt contributed towards the decision and Thistle duly gained the necessary election vote at the expense of Leith Athletic, Kilmarnock, Airdrieonians and Abercorn. It was fitting that our inaugural Top Flight fixture was the first competitive game to be played at Meadowside. And what a starter we had been given. Heart of Midlothian were the visitors – and they were the current Scottish Champions! Niall Kennedy takes up the story: “Thistle were able to field their strongest eleven but it was still an enormous task. Thistle, up against a strong wind, played an early form of route one football with backs and halfs sending the ball quickly to their forwards. Robert Gray scored the first Thistle goal, followed by a goal from wee John Ferguson a minute after half time. However, it was the third goal, just one minute later again, that drew a huge ovation from the crowd of 7,000. Willie Paul, the oldest man on the pitch, took a shot from long range that beat the keeper. Thistle held on after a late rally from Hearts to take both points. It was an amazing win brought about more by hard work than by skill and ability, but amazing all the same. The reaction in Partick to the victory was unbelievable. Residents who had hung out of tenement windows watching the large crowd throng the streets before the game now watched them leave Meadowside singing and dancing. The newspapers were full of the story of a well-known Thistle follower who announced he was going to start at the nearest close and insisted he was going to visit every tenant in the entire burgh to shake their hands. There were rumours that the Thistle committee had commissioned a statue of Willie Paul to commemorate his goal.” And so it came to be that Thistle prevailed in a famous battle of the Champions. Top Flight Victory # 1 was secured on day one of our entry into the arena. With no goal average system in place Thistle fast forwarded straight to the joint top place in Scottish Football. The Jukebox Rebel
^ Cheers Jaggernaut, glad to know you're enjoying it. Thistle's history is awesome and I just love digging it up! Top Flight Victory # 100 Sat-26-Aug-1911 Motherwell [a] W2-1 Scorers: Aleck Raisbeck, John King Att: 8,000 Manager: George Easton Played at: Fir Park, Motherwell. George Easton's Jags maintained their unbeaten start to the season in 1911-1912 on matchday 3 to go 3rd in the table. I wonder if they knew it was the 100th Top Flight win? Glasgow Herald Match report: “Motherwell attacked from the outset but latterly the Thistle had the major portion of the play, and after several clever clearances by Hampton, Raisbeck, following a well placed free kick, opened the scoring after 16 minutes. Motherwell thereafter were seen at their best, Watson equalizing with a grand shot. Until the interval the home men held the upper hand, but failed to augment their score. The second half was keenly contested, with the visitors if anything ahead in combinations. From a corner kick Gilchrist hit the crossbar with a fine drive. After a spell of level play King added a second goal for the Thistle. Motherwell pressed towards the close, but failed to get on level terms.” There's that man again - Aleck Raisbeck, Captain Fantastic, there at every important moment during this period. No doubt the patrons of the various Brake Clubs were in good form on the return journeys to Glasgow. Thistle maintained this excellent form throughout the entire campaign and finished the season in a lofty joint 4th along Heart of Midlothian, and a mere 11 points behind the (now defunct) champions, Old Rangers.
