billko
Thistle Weir 2 Kilmarnock 2 (U14's) A decent result today for Thistle's 14's against Killie today at a cold windy Petershill Park but it could and should have been better for this young Thistle side. Kilmarnock who play in the Elite tier of youth football were the latest team to experience how Thistle go at you from kick off and the young Jags were all over this young Killie side for the first period. Any doubt folk had that Thistle couldn't compete with their Elite counterparts were quickly dispelled and so was any thoughts Killie had that this would be a formality. In this first 30 minute period the passing, movement and build up play was superb and a joy to watch especially in the conditions today in Springburn. Kilmarnock just couldn't get to grips with Thistle and it was no suprise when the young Jags took a deserved lead after another fine move and excellent finish put them one up. For the rest of this period Killie just tried to hang on with good defending and good goalkeeping keeping the score at 1-0. The second period started again with Thistle on the front foot and dominating proceedings but couldn't find that second goal. Killie came into it more in the last 10mins of this period but the game was not as free flowing as the first period and was getting a bit scrappy. The last period was the same but conditions were playing their part now as the wind got up and made it difficult for both teams especially Thistle who like to move the ball quickly. The game turning a bit scrappy suited Killie more and they managed to sneak an equaliser against the run of play. Killie were now the team who sensed the victory and tried to push for the second goal. Thistle defended and competed well in the last 10mins and got the momentum back and were to get their second and what we thought would be the winner in this match. Football can be cruel though and a punted free kick in the last minute into the Thistle box was to find the Killie striker a good few yards offside but he was allowed to play on and score. The celebrations from Killie showed how much they wanted something from this game even if it's not what they deserved from the match What it did prove is that this young Jags team can mix it with a team who play in the tier above them which shows you how well this young side are doing just now. It was also a game to try players out in different positions which to be honest did let Killie into the game a bit but it will be good experience for these boys to get game time in different positions and formations. Hopefully for next season Thistle can get into the Elite tier of youth football so they can get more games like this Well done to the young Jags for playing some excellent football and some top performances on show from alot of the boys today. billko
Thistle Weir 4 St Johnstone 6 (14's) A poor day for the young Jags at Lochinch against a very good St Johnstone team who have won their last 16 matches in the Performance Tier. This was a game we have all been looking forward to and what should have been a day for great football but the weather had other ideas. The strong wind made it very difficult for these two teams to play any great football but did suit Saint's more direct approach than Thistle's short passing game. The first period ended 1-0 to Saints with the young Jags having the wind against them and the ref who allowed play to continue after a blatant foul on the Thistle CB and then even more laughable allowed the resulting the goal to stand after the lad who put the ball in the net was a good few yards offside. Up to this point Thistle were the better side and they didn't deserve to be behind in the match Thistle conceded another early in the second period probably still annoyed at the poor decision in the first period from the ref and not concentrating as they should. St Johnstone's excellent front two were starting to cause all sorts of problems for the young Jags defence who were battling hard to contain them. To their credit the young Jags fought back later in the period and scored two themselves and it ended 2-2 The high winds had eased a little for the third period but it was still making it difficult for any great football to be played. Saints were more direct and Thistle stuck to the script of how they play which is building from the back and i personally think it's great to see them believe in this style of football. Results are not as important as development is at this age group and a more direct approach could be used if the score did matter. It was difficult to keep up with this last period as Saints went 3-2, then 4-2 ahead before Thistle pulled a goal back. St Johnstone then made it 5-3 before the young Jags pulled another back to make it 5-4 in Saint's favour. The next goal was always going to be crucial in this game and as the young Jags pushed for the equaliser it was St Johnstone who got it on the counter attack to win with a 2 goal margin. The boys were down but they gave it their all against a very good team with alot of quality players in their ranks. Apparently Thistle got most of the credit from the game as they kept trying to play football in the adverse conditions and that it was a bit dissappointing Saints ditched their normal style of play and go for a long ball game. This will be good for the boys development (no matter the scoreline) and they know that all of the goals conceded were preventable and learning is what it's all about at this age group. It was good to play a team of this quality but a shame the weather hampered both teams style of football. Not the classic game we hoped it would be but a good workout for the boys all the same and would be great to meet sides of this quality every week. Next up is a trip to Dundee and although the boys were a bit down for their performance at the weekend the boys were all in good spirits and put in a great session at training last night. Weather permitting the game on Sunday away to Dundee should be another good test for this young Thistle side and looking forward to it. billko
Next up for the 14's is an away game against Dumbarton. (Vale of Leven Academy, Alexandria, Sunday 16th Feb, 2.15pm ko) After last weeks cancellation away to Dundee the boys will be looking forward to getting a game this week and it should be a tough test for the young Jags especially if Dumbarton do what they did in the first game and play some older age group players in the team. This is a compliment to this young Jags side and shows how other teams react when it comes to playing them. Looking forward to it and really hoping the weather is kinder than it has been in recent weeks and allow's for a good game of football. billko
Official Match report http://thistleweir.c...6_dumbarton_u14 Dumbarton 3 Thistle 3 Thistle didn't really get going in this game against a very physical Dumbarton side but did play some decent football in spells. The young Jags scored first and had most of the possession in this game but Dumbarton's direct approach was always going to cause problems. Dumbarton equalised and then scored anoher soon after but the young Jags kept trying to play the passing game and were always dangerous but never managed to get the equaliser in this 2nd period. The 3rd period was again all about Thistle's passing game and Dumbarton's direct approach and the game did get messy at times. The young Jags however were to get that equaliser and it was them who were to score next and it was the best goal of the day. A fine run and shot from outside the box found the top corner and was a fitting reward for one of Thistle's best performers on the day. Dumbarton however were to score again and it was a scrappy goal that Thistle should have dealt with better. With 10 mins to go the young Jags had one their centre backs sent off which was really harsh on the boy and a poor decision from the ref. Dumbarton sensed the win but the Thistle boys stood firm and defended really well. The young Jags hadn't settled for a draw either and went for the winner themselves and had a couple of chances to win the game. It wasn't to be but a great effort from the boys. Thistle were not at their best on the day but both teams put alot of effort into the game and a draw was maybe the correct result. Next up is an away trip to play Airdrie. billko
Airdrie v Thistle (14's) Postponed due to the home team not turning up Never seen or heard of this ever happening at this level. Pitch still booked, ref on the pitch with all the Thistle boys and the Airdrie physio had arrived also. Apparently they get changed at the stadium sometimes and then get a mini bus to the pitch at Airdrie Leisure Centre so it wasn't a huge concern they were not at the venue half an hour before ko. The Thistle boys at least managed to get a light training session in. Disgrace for this to happen and a poor show from Airdrie for wasting alot of folks time today.
lady-isobel-barnett
Bad enough when the away team doesn't turn up because they got lost or got time or venue mixed up. For the home team to fail to trap and no one there to even give a reason that's inexcusable. On a more positive note our win yesterday naturally overshadowed three other results. Cowdenbeath with Brownlie at the heart of their defence beat Dundee 2-0. Similarly Alloa with Liam Lindsay at centreback beat Morton 1-0 in Greenock. Tho' no longer a youngster as such Ryan Scully had a clean sheet playing for Dunfermline. No idea just how well those three played yesterday but the clean sheets certainly suggest good performances. Last week McAleer was MotM playing for Airdrie. Edited February 23, 2014 by lady-isobel-barnett
billko
ThistleWeir 2 Clyde 4 (U14's) A tough afternoon for the young Jags at Lochinch on Sunday against a strong Clyde side who are always tough opponents. Thistle started brightly enough but were thwarted by good defending and never got the crucial first goal to settle the nerves in this game which was being played at a high tempo. Clyde were using their two strong and quick strikers to good effect and were always a danger running onto long through balls and this is where they made the breakhrough. The Thistle keeper had no chance as the Clyde centre forward raced in one on one to side foot into the corner of the net. Not the start Thistle wanted but they kept at it and created a couple of good chances but they didn't take them. Thistle did manage to get the equaliser in the second period and it was well deserved and a well worked goal. A good passing move down the right side which resulted in a pin point cross which was finished well from close range got the Jags level. The game was never a classic at any point and both teams cancelled each other out at times but it was Clyde's more direct style that was causing most problems and they looked the team most likely to score next. This is what happened and then they scored again soon after to leave the young Jags deflated at the end of the second period. The last period saw Thistle go at Clyde straight from kick off and had good periods of play and a few near misses with the Clyde keeper and defence making last ditch save's and tackles to hold on to the two goal cushion they had. As the game headed into the last 5 mins Thistle got it back to 3-2 and the players sensed they would get the draw and went for it. This only created some gaps in the side which Clyde exploited on th counter attack and scored their fourth just on the final whistle. The young Jags were all on a bit of a downer at the end but they all put in a great effort considering most of them played in a very tough game on Friday night against the SYFA Scottish select U15 team which was physically demanding on them. Not the best day for the 14's but the boys will no doubt pick themselves up again for the next match which will see the visit of Ross County to Lochinch which will be another tough test for them. On a brighter note the Thistle U17's beat Clyde 9-0 which was played straight after the 14's match I managed to see the first half hour of this game and Thistle were excellent playing some fantastic football with great passing moves and goals of a high quality. Clyde had no answer to the footbal the Jags were playing who looked like scoring in every attack. Never seen the whole game but the final score was pretty emphatic and i was very impressed with the 17's both as a team and the technical ability shown by many of the players. The Sunnylaw Jag
Not so good for the Under 20's tonight. Getting beat 3 -1 good to see the commentary on the club site though. I did go along and watch it and was a bit disappointed at my first viewing of the team and only in touches did they seem to proffer any real ideas and overall it seemed to be a disjointed display.. I thought the sending off for Keenan was a bit harsh though. I did leave early so never saw the Thistle goal.
Veejag
Remember TSJ, it is currently a very disjointed team given how many of them are out on loan playing first team football.
