My Thought On Personal Liberty

My thought on personal liberty seems to have offended some people.

On the issue of personal choice, I am a libertarian.

One must be allowed to do anything unless violating others' rights.

For example, suicide, drug, prostitution, pornography, incest, gambling, etc. must be legal.

However, one who choose a dangerous choice, such as boxing, mountaineering in winter, etc. must understand that s/he cannot receive rescue from the public organisations.

I say have personal liberty so long as it does no harm to others (my understanding of John Stuart Mills summation of liberty, rather than the corruption of this idea as presented by SS).

The case for it not being "acceptable" is only credible in so far as incest is linked to birth defects or in so far as (as with any other sexual activity) there is coercion or exploitation. Read that as "causing harm to others".

 

I am a libertarian. I have no qualms about that.

Oddly enough, I sometimes wonder if the dividing line in politics are drawn not by how people define liberty, but by how they define harm and its causes.

so what about climbing a mountain in the summer.

what about crossing the road, what about getting in a plane. what about countless other actions people do on a daily basis which could get them injured.

nah mate he shouldnt get medical treatment coz he shouldnt have been walkin across the road when that cars brakes suddenly failed and smacked into him.

regardless of how irregular or regular something occurs doesnt determine wether or not they deserve treatment for it.

 

You say prostitution should be ok, STD's would be on the increase significantly 1, because of prostitution being legalised and secondly because they all got themself into that situation in the first place.

about the only thing i agree with SS about, germany has this and it works fine all have to be checked by doctors to work and are policed stringently, it is also a tax income and far safer for the workers.

 

unlike UK where it is a lottery if they have seen a doctor that year never mind that month and germany has far less STD than uk due to this.

Nah, you've missed his point. The point is there should be no publicly funded assistance for the medical consequences of any action.

STDs are only such a problem with prostitution because it is an underground industry and people are forced into it. As soon as you legalise it, you can regulate brothels so that basic standards on contraception and STD protection is taken, and go a long way to fighting the coercive element. See how other countries have dealt with this.

Sick and disgusting according to whom? As long as there are two fully consenting adults and the appropriate measures are taken to eliminate the risk of pregnancy, is it really substantially different to "normal" sexual activity?

I think 99.9% of the advanced world population would find it sick and disgusting at the mere thought of shagging their own brother or sister.

 

I'm genuinely surprised at you WJ, no matter how liberal minded you (or anyone) may be. To defend such an act (by consenting adults or not) as not being 'substantially different to "normal" sexual activity' really does stun me.

 

It's effectively no different from a mother or father and a child of theirs having sexual relations. It's just wrong, plain and simple.

Are you looking at this rationally or just confirming society's bias, though?

 

I personally would not shag my sister (or indeed my mother, aunts or grandmothers for that matter ). That doesn't mean that it is somehow morally wrong or morally repulsive for others to do so if they are two consenting adults who understand the potential consequences of their behaviour and take necessary steps not to cause unnecessary harm either to each other or to other people.

 

Sexual activity is just that: sexual activity. It takes place between persons. The only moral issue I can see is of consent. Why should something as incidental as biological commonality make sexual relations outside the realm of normality or acceptability. "It's just wrong" isn't a proper reason; it's not a reason at all. It's just stating it to be wrong without any actual evidence or reason to support it.
