Grew up round the corner from Paul Buchanan (Blue Nile) and played football with him a few times. Once got free champagne in a club in Glasgow when U2 made an appearance drinking with Simple Minds. We were nowhere near them and one of my mates just went over and blagged one, good quality too. I think it was the Warehouse but long ago now and time can be a funny old chap.

Gangs coming into games were pretty common, often a local Maryhill gang would wander in when the gates got opened during midweek games, usually there was about 10 or so and they always carried a ball and usually came in with a dug! I remember also a big fight at Shawfield with the Bridgeton derry and the Thistle fans at the end of the game one midweek game.

I would like to add that when I read that the police have a lot to answer for I do agree, but would have to say that many of the rank and file coppers that day were heroes. They got the game stopped (one ran to the ref when his superiors stood doing nothing), they tried the kiss of life, they pulled some to safety and they are the ones having nightmares probably to this day over what they saw. Those at fault both that day and in any cover up were mostly the officer class, inspectors and above who had no idea how to do their job.

My recollections as I was there are not too sharp due to time but I think it was a Friday night and they only opened the enclosure and maybe the main stand. In the enclosure we did at least have half the people there and maybe more.
