The Jukebox Rebel
New Years Day Of all the days in the year, the 1st and 2nd January are way, way out in front as our “most played” dates. New Years Day itself leads the “table” with 75 matches and the 2nd January (which has been catching up) is next with 65 matches. Indeed, it was a very common occurrence to play two days in a row, 1st and 2nd, in order to maximise holiday revenues. Our New Years Day record is positive and reads: P75 W35 D16 L24. The Scottish League has long organised “pairings” for New Years day fixtures and Thistle’s traditional opponent has been obvious in three phases. From 1912-1925 it was Third Lanark (12 in a row), from 1927 to 1965 it was Clyde (25 out of 29) and from 1966 to 1981 (10 out of 12) it was Rangers. Our last New Years game was in 2005, a 1-1 draw at Love Street - Lambie's last last last last game in charge. It was his 3rd and final game as caretaker during his “4th spell” as gaffer. Derek Fleming fired in a beauty for his old boss to put Jags ahead – it was just like old times. In the second half, Jean-Yves Anis sliced in a crazy o.g. leveller to deny a historic win for our great messiah. Amazingly, 2014 will register the first ever New Years derby between Thistle and Celtic. It will be our first New Years Glasgow derby since 1988. The Jukebox Rebel
New Years Day The Fixture Landmarks 1 January 1883. Our first (known) New Years game - Jags win 10-0 at Dundee Strathmore to kick off a mini-tour of Dundee. Still stands as our biggest win on this date. 1 January 1886. Jags win 3-0 at Anfield. Liverpool fans can relax - it was Everton we were beating! 1 January 1889. Our joint record defeat, all-games, all-time, a 10-0 loss away to Accrington. 1 January 1891. Last New Years game against English opposition, a 2-2 draw at Bootle. One NY defeat in four against the English - not too shabby. 1 January 1898. First competitive New Years game and also the first derby. At Meadowside, we defeat Third Lanark 5-2 in the First Division. 1 January 1900. First game of the 20th Century, Jags on tour. 5-0 at Clachnacuddin. Bet there was a whiskey or two downed that night! 1 January 1901. Our lowest (recorded) New Years crowd, only 1,000 at Grant Street for Clachnacuddin 4 Thistle 3. Proved to be our last friendly on this date. 1 January 1912. 2-2 draw at home to the Hi-Hi. This will become our regular New Years derby. 1 January 1921. We play for the 10th year in a row, the joint longest such stretch for the fixture. A 1-0 win at home to Thirds. 1 January 1925. We crash 3-0 at home to Third Lanark who finish bottom of the League. Their relegation disrupts the New Years pairing and we won’t play them again for nearly 30 years on this date. 1 January 1927. We play Clyde on the 1st January for the very first time, a 5-0 win at Shawfield. From now on, they are to be our designated New Years opponents. 1 January 1951. We play Clyde yet again. Since 1927 we've only played Clyde. This is the 17th time in a row, a New Years record. 1 January 1955. Willie Sharp scores against Clyde in front of 18,000 at Shawfield as Jags draw 2-2. It was Willie's sixth New Years goal. He's our top scorer for the day. Willie is probably our Top Scorer in everything bar the Tennent’s Sixes! 1 January 1959. Cracking 3-0 win at Shawfield. John Wilson bags our one and only (known) New Years day hat trick. 1 January 1966. The violent partisans of the Old Firm, fuelled by religion and drink, are split up on New Years day by order of the city magistrates. We are lumped with Rangers for the first time, Clyde have to deal with Celtic. 1 January 1972. Our biggest NY crowd, 40,000 at Ibrox. The League Cup winners go down 2-1. 1 January 1977. We play for the 10th year in a row, a 1-0 loss at Ibrox. It's the joint longest such stretch for the fixture. 1 January 1981. Last NY derby against Rangers, a tidy 1-1 draw at Ibrox. Alex O'Hara scores for Jags. 1 January 1988. The last NY Glasgow derby, McNaught and Doddsy ensure we get an away win at Firhill against the gypos. Sorry, "tennants". 1 January 2005. Lambie’s last stand, a 1-1 draw at Love Street. 1 January 2014. (Will be) our first ever New Years derby against Celtic. The Jukebox Rebel
Further to some new information on Season 1908-09 I've amended posts #224 and #348. The recent home run winless streak can now be accurately noted, and it's good news for the class of 2013 - they don't have to bear the burden all by themselves - the record is shared with the poor lot of 1908-09... Home League games without a win (and how the run was broken) 15 games 05.12.1908 to 11.12.1909 (25.12.1909 Hibernian [h] 3-1) 16.04.2013 to 01.02.2014 (22.02.2014 Aberdeen [h] 3-1) 12 games 06.01.1996 to 14.09.1996 (28.09.1996 Clydebank [h] 1-0) 11 games 23.04.1988 to 03.12.1988 (17.12.1988 Queen of the South [h] 2-1) 9 games 06.10.1979 to 09.04.1980 (13.04.1980 Dundee [h] 3-0) notes: Next in line are 9 different runs of 7 games. The run set between 1908 and 1909 was broken on Christmas Day 1909. This was also our first ever League victory at Firhill. The run set between 1908 and 1909 lasted for 1 year and 20 days, and was the longest in this category by time span. The run set between 2013 and 2014 was bizarre in many ways and could easily have included many victories within the 9 draws. Indeed, 4 of the drawn matches were also included within the streak which resulted in our second longest unbeaten League of all-time (21 games, 19.01.2013 to 16.08.2013). Only Partick Thistle can do this! The run set between 2013 and 2014 included our latest ever home League win of any given season, finally secured on the 22nd February of the 2013-14 season. The Jukebox Rebel
Some end of season Statto Business… Jaggy Factoid # 5176 On only one occasion have Thistle have failed to survive in their "first season back" - at the very first time of asking away back in season 1900-01. Since then, we have been successful in this quest six times out of six - in season 1902-03, 1971-72, 1976-77, 1992-93, 2002-03 and 2013-14. The Jukebox Rebel
Congratulations to Kris Doolan – top Partick Thistle League scorer for the third time. The first guy to get in amongst this kind of business since Dougie Somner. There’s a bit of debate kicking around as to whether Kris Doolan is a legend or not. Well, what you can say? He’s doing things that legends do, so that’s probably a good clue. No doubt our Grandads were having the same debate about Willie Sharp circa 1946. No. of times Top League scorer for Partick Thistle (Year It Was Achieved) 5 times Willie Sharp (1941, 1945*, 1946, 1954, 1956) 4 times Willie Paul (1892*, 1895, 1896, 1897) Sam Kennedy (1903, 1905, 1906, 1908) Dougie Somner (1976, 1977, 1978, 1979) 3 times Neil Harris (1916, 1918, 1920) Jimmy Kinloch (1921*, 1922*, 1923) John Wallace (1937, 1938, 1939) Willie Newall (1942, 1943, 1944) Alex Stott (1951, 1952, 1953) Kris Doolan (2011, 2012, 2014) notes: For this query I thought it was only right and proper to include ALL League seasons – namely Alliance, SFL, Southern, SPL, SPFL. * Joint top scorer. The Jukebox Rebel
I note that unfortunately there has never been a double lording. Did we ever get near it? 7 points away would be the nearest, 1930-31. We finished 4th but only 5 points behind Celtic, 7 points behind Rangers. Closest we've ever got to winning the League. The Jukebox Rebel
The Top-Flight Away Record in 2013-14 We won our first away game of the season 3-1 up in Dingwall and won our last away game of the season 4-2 at Tynecastle. The last time we performed this particular little Top Flight party trick was back in 1964-65 when we won 2-1 at Tannadice in August and 2-1 at Celtic Park in April. Quite right Woodstock, this one's for you The Top-Flight Away Record in 2013-14 Applying 3 points for a win across all 81 of our (official) Top Flight seasons and expressing the points gained as a percentage of those available, this season's away effort (42.11%) is our best return in the Division since 1964-65 (45.1%). Our previous best (-5) was set in 1972-73.

The Jukebox Rebel
The Top-Flight Away Record in 2013-14 The last time we remained undefeated in the Capital (when up against both Hearts and Hibs) was 1962-63. Back in those days of course it was much easier - we only played each team once home and away. In the season in question we defeated Hibs 2-0 in December. Spookily, our Hearts victory was a midweek game near the end of the season. You'll never believe what the score was... Wed-10-Apr-1963 Heart of Midlothian [a] W4-2 venue: Tynecastle att: 9,000 scorers: George Smith (3), Ian Cowan … weird, eh?
The Jukebox Rebel
Congratulations to Alan Archibald who has bagged yet another club record for his ever growing Jaggy legend CV. In terms of his role as head honcho of team affairs, Alan's single greatest attribute, in my opinion, is his superb ability in man management. His boys go into every game fully charged and highly confident, and expecting to get a result. Fair enough, it hasn't always worked out as expected but that core belief never disappeared from one game to the next. Even in the extra-ordinary home run there was no sense of panic. Normally, such a run would have players and management in full on headless chicken mode. I've went into every single game this season (even the Celtics) thinking we could get something. It's a long time since I've felt such optimism following Thistle. That's all down to the belief which has emanated from that dressing room. Even when it's backfired we've had amazing bouncebackability. Plenty of credit is due to this most promising young manager, perhaps the most promising since Davie McParland. Well done indeed to Archie, Shaggy and all the lads for a job very well done.
