The Real State Of The Scottish Game: How Our Top Flight Compares To Europe

Quite notable that, on average, our teams take in €22 (£15.94) per paying fan attending matches in the top flight. This makes us the fifth highest ticket prices in Europe, only clubs in England (€49, £35.54), Spain, Switzerland (€38, £27.57) and Germany (€36, £26.12) take in more per paying customer.

However our income from commercial activities is very low so is it the case that we fans are getting hammered because our game cannot gain adequate income from marketing?

"Austria, where the German Bundesliga enjoys such popularity, have a deal worth €5m (£3.6m) less than Scotland" is just one neighbouring country, and avoids the other obvious comparison - with Denmark, where both Bundesliga and local leagues are broadcast, but the Danish income from broadcasting is over one and a half times as high.

There are also severe structural problems in Scottish football, with clubs all having to act on individual initiatives (e.g. "swapping" rights to season ticket holders getting reduced tickets, provided that both clubs agree). A unified approach to marketing for commercial purposes and to pushing for input to fans' transport, for example, would inevitably yield better results. Well, provided that Doncaster didn't have anything to do with it, of course. :D
