Where did you hear that mate?

One of only 2 players who Airdrie fans rated for their team last season.

Im surprised at the shaking head figure, we are not going to get anyone higher than the lower division and McLaughlan has experience of the first divison, the fact he has been a standout in rubbish teams means he could improve if he plays in a slightly better team.

I posted some thing about our interest in McLaughlin about 4 weeks ago. Obviously with Airdrie going part time it shouldn't be too difficult signing him assuming there's not other clubs interested.

Can everyone please remember to provide a source if they make a post about any transfer rumours etc.

Otherwise we will have to remove them as we have no way of knowing if it's true or not.

Cheers

Our main issue is transfer rumours concerning the club that have no basis. This can be damaging for the club and then we end up with legal letters. Which would be passed on to the member who made the post.

Why would the club be concerned with transfers between other clubs?

They wouldn't. I mean transfers rumours about Partick Thistle, the post in question involved Ian McCall.

What does the "etc" refer to?

Well just general rumours about Partick Thistle that could be damaging. We don't mind if the person has proof and can back it up but we don't want to allow people to post all sorts of rumours about the club with no proof.

We want people to post these rumours but all we are asking is that if they involve Partick Thistle you make sure you provide a source or some sort of proof.

This all seems more than a little bizarre.

Doesn't the fact that something is a rumour suggest it's not being passed off as fact, and might just be complete fiction as many rumours prove to be? If it's not being passed off as fact then the chances of getting any legal letters is somewhat less than non-existent. Speculation of this nature probably stands as fair comment and it would take something quite extraordinary to move something of this nature to an actionable level.

If you're getting any heat from the club on this (why are we only bothered about rumours concering PTFC?) then quite frankly you should be telling them to go **** themselves.

Anyway, I passed Owen Coyle on the Maryhil Road today........

Just to clear things up. We don't want to stop people posting rumours or anything like that and we are just worried about getting legal letters from the club as we have been warned about this by several people.

The post in question was claiming to know that something had happened, which is a bit different from a rumour.

If members want to post want rumours then ok. But please state that it is a rumour. If we ever do get any legal action from the club in the future we will simply pass it on to the member in question.

Cheers

Our main aim when we decided to set up this forum was to provide a friendly atmosphere where people can disagree with each other without it resorting to abuse. We weren’t bothered about rumours being posted on here but we have acted on advice given to us when we were setting up the forum.

We have had no advice from the club on what would merit any legal action so we chose to play it safe. We have also always stated that this is your forum and we want to make it a place you all enjoy. So if you want to be able to post transfer rumours without having to provide a source that’s fine. However, please keep in mind that when you signed up to the forum you agreed that you will be liable for any legal action resulting from something you have posted. Thankfully we have not yet had any dealings with the club, if we ever do we would try and protect our members but if the club wish to pursue their complaint then there’s nothing we can do about that.

We don’t want to restrict what people say, and we apologise if it has come across that way.

IMO if you post rumours of signings its fine (isnt that what this kind of place is for ?), however if you post about something a player is alleged to have done somewhere then you may have a potential legal issue (any forum can get into that kind of trouble not just this one)

TBH if the forum is gonna be run that way then it will die very quickly and no one will use it , there is a huge difference between posting potential signings and some of the other stuff. If you are unable to make that distinction in the rules then why bother having the site in the first place ?

Take a look at the rumour pages on the BBC football site (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/gossip_and_transfers/8734436.stm) or Football265.com. Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are linked with loads of players that they would not sign in a million years. In many cases, clubs are trying to offload players for big fees. In others, agents are trying to drum interest in their clients and/or get them better deals.

Both the BBC and the owners of Football365.com (Sky?) have expensive libel lawyers to advise them. If a player sued the owners of this site, they would have to demonstrate significant damage to their reputation. Given the limited number of members, that would be very difficult. Frankly, you have been given wrong advice. I get mine from a relative who is one Scotland's top libel lawyers.

As we have tried to clarify - we have no problem with posting rumours now. We never really had a problem in the first place, just when the club were involved we wanted to play it safe.

We we're obviously being too cautious and accept everyone's comments. We aren't trying to be big wet blankets and never wanted to stop people posting rumours as we agree that this helps create discussion.

We have taken everyone's points on board and hope that members will feel free to post rumours in the future. Although we still maintain the right to remove a post which is clearly just malicious.

Sorry for any hassle this has caused.

Cheers

You may then want to remove a four letter word (non sweary) in the Alex Rae thread. It would make little or no difference to the post.

That is a sensible approach. You are more at risk of a libel action if members here make false accusations (or allegations) in relation to players or club officials, especially board members. However, they would have demonstrate material damage to their reputation and/or income.

So, if the BBC runs off a cliff everyone follows? This debate is getting a little blown-up. However, it's admin's ball, so ...

(Ever wondered why the big media companies retain such expensive lawyers? Ever wondered why they still get sued?)

:o
