Zatafact? 141 Seasons Of The Indomitable P T F C

Recommended Posts

Still gutted about Friday. Biggest late killer since the Buns last minute in ET five years ago. As a wee consolation prize we can thank some Aberdonian hotel who, it is reported, spurred Celtic onto victory yesterday by setting off a fire alarm in the middle of the night! Hence we're now, at least, on top of this wee table:

Since a Premier League defeat

7 - Partick Thistle

5 - Celtic

4 - St Johnstone

3 - Inverness CT

That's gotta be worth a brag while it lasts… ;)

^ Splendid. I’m really pleased it was Aleck – it’s good for the Thistle story. The inimitable Robert Reid will have a field day expanding upon his classic quip of “history tells us that the one came before the three”…

From hereon the 18th September should be known as “National Aleck Raisbeck Day” in the Scottish football calendar. I might even grow a celebratory 'tache! :ptfc:

I should very much like to read that match report, but unfortunately all I’m getting is a red cross. Anybody else having that problem?

As regards Thistle having to play in the Scottish Qualifying Cup, it was the ignominious consequence of our all-time worst season, 1908-09, when we finished bottom of the League with a measly 8 points from 34 games. It was the one and only time in the 20th century that we were placed into the tournament. Getting to the third round was enough to qualify for the Scottish Cup proper and we duly managed to do that with wins against Renton (away, 1-0), Dumbarton Harp (home, 3-1) and Nithsdale Wanderers (home, 3-1). However, fixture congestion meant that, by the time we got to the 4th Round, we were struggling to find a date to play the game. Also, despite us getting a home draw, Firhill was being used by Glasgow Juniors on the scheduled game date. As if that wasn’t bad enough, we were faced with the added dilemma of having a League match to play on the same day! It was decided that we’d switch our tie away out to Bathgate FC and send a reserve team to play what was our final ever game in the Scottish Qualifying Cup, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the West Lothian side on Saturday 16th October 1909. It was probably the right decision - the first team won 3-1 at Broomfield on League duty. “Good riddance to the Scottish Qualifying Cup” said a Brake Club spokesman. Probably.

For historical posterity an update to post # 90...

Most League games without defeat (and how the run was broken)

27 games

21.11.1970 to 18.09.1971 (25.09.1971 Morton [a] 0-2)

21 games

19.01.2013 to 16.08.2013 (24.08.2013 Motherwell [a] 0-1)

18 games

26.08.2000 to 13.02.2001 (17.02.2001 Stenhousemuir [a] 0-2)

15 games

29.09.1962 to 02.03.1963 (09.03.1963 Queen of the South [h] 0-1)

15.11.1975 to 28.02.1976 (04.09.1976 Ayr United [h] 0-2)

Notes:

  • Our greatest run of 27 games stretched over 2 seasons and included a fine 3-2 victory against Old Rangers at Firhill on 4th September 1971.
  • The run of Archie's Jags in 2013 was especially remarkable in so far as it was predominantly achieved by a brand new manager. Not only was it the clubs 2nd longest League run of all-time, but it was the all-time best start to any Thistle manager's career.
  • The 15 game unbeaten run in season 1962-63 stands as our best ever run to be solely achieved in the top League.
  • At the peak of that run (see table for 6th March 1963) we were neck and neck with Rangers at the top, each club with 31 points. In typical Thistle fashion, we undid all of our hard work with a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Queen of the South 3 days later...

And confirmation of another 2nd all-time best run...

Most Away League games without defeat (and how the run was broken)

13 games

05.12.1970 to 11.09.1971 (25.09.1971 Morton [a] 0-2)

10 games

16.02.2013 to 10.08.2013 (24.08.2013 Motherwell [a] 0-1)

9 games

29.09.1962 to 02.03.1963 (16.03.1963 Dundee [a] 1-2)

07.10.2001 to 13.02.2001 (17.02.2001 Stenhousemuir [a] 0-2)

Notes:

  • When Davie McParland's young team won 2-0 at Arbroath in December 1970, it was Thistle's first away League win in 16 games. It proved to be the launch pad for the club's all-time best away League run. Only Thistle can do this.
  • Much like Davie McParland before him, Alan Archibald's young side of 2013 were attempting to turn around a terrible run of away form. Thistle's 4-0 victory at East End Park in March was the first away win in almost 6 months. We then proceeded to motor on with the 2nd greatest League run of all-time - it's how we roll.
  • Willie Thornton's top flight run of 1962-63 included superb 2-0 away victories at Celtic Park and Easter Road.
  • Had it not been for that pesky reverse at Ochilview, Lambie's Jags would have recorded a sensational new record of 17 away League games unbeaten. Indeed, it was Thistle's only away League defeat in a whole year period.

Archie is taking this football club to a place it has not been for decades. Its rightful place.

In Archie we trust.

^ Talking about Jags in Europe...

LASK Linz 2 Partick Thistle 2, Sunday 25th June 1995

Jaggy trivia # 68

Apparently, everyone’s change of clothing, including suits, the entire team kit, strips, boots, the lot didn’t make the London switch from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2. A dispute between the respective baggage handlers caused a delay and the German plane wasn’t for hanging about – on arrival Thistle were facing the prospect of playing their first European game in 20 years without their boots. We sweated until the kit finally arrived at the eleventh hour on the Saturday night, but it was too late for Brown McMaster et al who were taken out for dinner in their travel tracksuits by the Austrian club officials!

Jaggy factoids # 764

The match in Austria was the only draw in our ten European competition matches. Thistle recovered well from being two down in six minutes, with goals from Rod McDonald and Derek McWilliams bringing home a precious point for the Jags. Albert Craig twice had the ball in the net but was offside on each occasion.

Jaggy factoids # 765

This was absolutely the earliest start to a season in Thistle’s history.

Great Jags interview snips # 214

"We had a nightmare start, but you must remember we have not played for six weeks. If we can beat Keflavik on Saturday we will have a great chance of topping the group. We can still get AC Milan in the UEFA Cup." ~ Rod McDonald (Glasgow Herald)

Partick Thistle v Cowdenbeath

League Cup 2nd Round, Tuesday 27th August 2013

  • Tonight is our 306th match in the League Cup, 23 of which have came against Celtic, our most common tournament fixture.
  • This will be the 6th time we've faced Cowdenbeath in the League Cup and our record is generally quite good (3-1-1, 11-8).
  • We knocked Cowdenbeath out of the Quarter Finals in 1956 en route to the Final.
  • When the new single tie League Cup format was introduced back in 1984-85, Cowdenbeath (away) was our first fixture. We lost the game 3-0. Tonight is our first chance to directly avenge that defeat in League Cup terms.
  • Since single tie knockout was introduced we've played 53 games, winning 24 and losing 29. It's not been a great tournament for us since the halcyon days of the 1950s and 1970s.
  • We don't like extra-time, and have only prevailed in 5 of the 14 new format ties which have gone the extra 30.
  • We have to go away back to 2008 to find our last 2nd Round League Cup win - a fine 2-1 victory at Dens Park with late goals from Ian Maxwell (current GM) and a Gary Harkins penalty sealing a win which set us up with a nice little earner and a crack at Old Rangers.

"Come on ye Jags" :ptfc:

One for the calendar?

Since we started to play League Football in 1891-92 we have never once remained unbeaten at home in a calendar year.

So far, Jags are unbeaten at Firhill in all competitions in the calendar year, 2013.

So very nearly lost to Dunfermline, then they ended up in League One!

Jags on the verge of joining the Elite "1000 Club"

When we beat St Mirren 2-1 on Saturday 27th October 1962 with 2 goals from Neil Duffy, it gave us a milestone 750th Top Flight victory. We were only the 7th club to hit that mark behind Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, Dundee and Motherwell. However, our prolonged Top Flight absences of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s have had a devastating effect on our all-time standings and Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and St Mirren have all overtaken us in the race to the 1,000 milestone. St Mirren got there in 2010.

Saturdays repeat 2-1 victory over St Mirren was especially sweet therefore, and another step forward for Jags as we seek to restore natural order. Our 63rd Premier League win against "The Buddies" was our 999th official victory in the Top Flight.

Our 1,000th is long overdue. The wait is nearly over.

Jaggy trivia # 57

Jags fans who turned out to witness our 2-0 victory in the Southern League Division A at Shawfield on 8th September 1945 would have been amused to discover the Clyde in unfamiliar wartime attire. After the 2nd World War, Clyde were so poor they could not afford new shorts for the players. For a number of matches Clyde players wore khaki shorts purchased from a Glasgow Army and Navy Surplus store.
