The Olympics

The constant references to this event are starting to severely p*ss me off.. In my youth, I like many were avid followers of Alan Wells or Tom McKee and even watched such sports as gymnastics with a degree of intensityI normally reserved for football.

However, thay was a different time, when you weren't bombarded twenty four hours a day with television coverage of every imaginable (and no doubt many unimaginable!) sporting event

I daresay, I'll watch such events as the mens 100 metres, but to be honest only if I've nothing better to do. I'm afraid the increasing commercialisation and economic disparity between poor and ric nations s leabes me somewhat cold.

To add insult to injury we now have to contend with another excuse for the media to remind us how lucky we are to be British.

... knew this would happen 7 years ago when they got it but jeez it's grating on my t*ts totally - and while there were only 3 channels in '72/'76&'80 things have moved on and the inclusion of 'professional' sports like tennis, football, basketball and golf (in 2016) is quite ridiculous

also heard that some of the poorer African nations who can't afford for their athletes to acclimatise in the UK have pulled out of pre-games training in the UK as LOCOG says they'll only get the £25k payment after they have been here and spent the money to 'prevent fraud' - fkin precious statement ... would love someone to go over the books in detail on the £10bn spent so far on this marketing event for London tourism

most likely not to watch anything as there'll be enough kack relating to it on the news every night

And how many medals?

Frankly, as per "Gone With the Wind" I do not give a damm. Only a day to go and I'm already nauseous from the coverage, just like England at well anything if they just cover the sport instead of given it the "Rule Brittania" guff, internidably it wouldn't be so cringeworthy.

I really hope I'm not turning into a sad old bugger, but to be honest I find all this hype and flagwaving a total turn off.

The wide-ranging and near nonstop coverage and reference to the Olympics, means that for the next few weeks i will finally get to tackle that long list of things to do round the house, and places to take Princess Leia, that i have been promising to do for over a millennia.

I might watch the women's beach volleyball but apart from that, they can stick it where the sun dont shine.

I wonder how many Scottish charities and worthwhile causes missed out on funding because the lottery gave it t the London olympics instead. Not to mention the amount of Scottish tax collected to give a 'legacy' for the people of East London.

I am planning to actively avoid as much of the coverage as I possibly can, because the whole thing looks like being Last Night of the Proms with running spikes. At a time when the country is more or less bankrupt, so much so that the government feels it necessary to cut vital public services (as nice as that big stadium looks I would hardly say it is vital), the amount of money being pumped into these games is, frankly, obscene. I suppose they didn't know that the economy was going to tank back in 2005, back when Mr 'no more boom and bust' was in charge of the purse strings.

Maybe he is boycotting the board in protest.

Just for tonight though.

 just seen that on the news - the NK crew getting their wee knickers in a knot over the wrong flag in a 90% empty stadium - must have bricked it incase that cream of sum yun guy executes them on their return home -

Jeezo - we must be allowed to spend money on stuff other than the NHS and money for junkies. Surely? Can't we have any fun at all ?

Thought it was a fantastic ceremony. Really enjoyed it. The copper petals that accompanied each team into the stadium that then went on to make up the Olympic flame was a nice touch also.

Good luck to Scotland's Hannah Miley later tonight in the 400m Swimming Medley final.

Approached it with my usual deep-fried cynicism and presbyterian gruffness. Have to admit that I was blown away by the spectacle and the design of the cauldron is stunning.

Boyle's homage to the history of protest was very clever and his celebration of the NHS was courageous. Certainly got the The Daily Mail brigade fulminating.

And if young Scottish footballers had even a small amount of Hoy's dedication, no doubt we would have a national side in major tourneys again.
