Partick Thistle V Rangers

Given that Thistle and Rangers both came from very similar backgrounds; working class shipbuilding communities, there are undoubted parallels between the two club's in their formative years. Indeed it has been suggested that Rangers were so generous to Thistle while we moved from Partick to Maryhill was because they didn't want a club on the other side of the river potentially taking support away from them.

However, while one club became the sporting focal point for one half of a massive, sectarian, divide in Glasgow the other never adopted a signing policy around religious grounds and simply became a football team, albeit one that hasn't won pots and pots of trophies and remains compared to others relatively poorly supported, that served its' community regardless of colour or creed.

A game for the benefit of an orange lodge 99 years ago is not a stain on our history. Shame on anyone who would try and suggest it was. Can all of Glasgow’s other clubs claim a stain free history?

Quick, somebody post the picture of iBroke with the swastika flying over it from the late 30s ;)

I would be amazed if such a picture existed as the Orange Order considered Fascism a Pan European Catholic Plot and were very much against supporting it. From memory the only organised support for Franco apart from Hitler & Mussolini came from the Blue Shirts in Southern Ireland who sent Volunteers to fight for Franco.

Away fighting for our country or worried about what they might catch from the visitors?

That's a very valid point Kni - Maryhill and surrounding areas provided a large number of Volunteers due to the fact the HLI were based up the road - in fact ( please note Bilko ) if you go down Garscube Road there is a small School on the RHS just past the Roon Toll - this was originally Lyon Street - it was named " The Bravest Street" in Britain as every Family who lived in it lost someone during the First World War. A memorial to the Men of Lyon Street is in the School Entrance..

So Billko you had to troll sorry trawl through almost a hundred years of history to find something that would sully Glasgow's oldest professional club. As to your club we don't need to go as far as 100 days and you've only been in existence for 18 months or so. Nor do we have to go back too far in the club that died's history to find shameful episodes.

Tried to find this, but the only thing I could find was this........In September 1941, the S.F.A. announced that Celtic Park was to be closed until October 17th 1941 following an Old Firm game at Ibrox. Celtic fans had fought amongst themselves and with the police, threw bottles at the police and onto the trackside, displayed a German flag and indulged in pro-Nazi chants. A front-page Evening Times headline on 6th September 1941 read 6th September read:

"BATONS, BOTTLES IN GAME AT IBROX".

The following day’s paper featured a letter from a member of the public who noticed the contrast in front page articles where one focussed on Russia's fight in WWII and the other on "those hooligans who bring such a disgrace to our city and our national sport."

He continued, "Here, on one side, was a country fighting so valiantly in its own towns and streets not only its own battle but ours as well, and fighting regardless of creed or anything else. On the other hand, we have citizens of this country, allied to another, fighting among themselves all over a game of football."

I'm not trying to sully any clubs reputation and why should this do that?

I know a couple of thistle fans that are in the Orange Order, both over 60 and love the thistle. Thanks for posting Billko hope you don't mind me copying this for them.

I don't mind at all you copying this JaggyMad and will make for interesting reading for these two Thistle fans.

Then what is your point then particularly since you quickly talked about a whiter than whiter brigade, which would suggest you were trying to needle people?

The whiter than white brigade would never have believed this game ever took place at Firhill.

As for needling people that goes on all the time on this forum does it not?

Or maybe some folk just like dishing it out. ;)
