The Thistle Archive
Originally published in the forum 10 years ago and now, on the anniversary of the win, re-published as our latest 'Partickle' with new photies and whatnot... On the 30th June 1945, Partick Thistle won the second of the three major trophies to land in the cabinet at Firhill Road - The Summer Cup. It’s the one that’s virtually forgotten about – mainly due to the fact that it was a short-lived wartime competition which, unlike the Scottish Cup and the League Cup, is now firmly out of sight and out of mind. However, it was regarded nationally as a significant achievement for the Jags at the time, and it should naturally follow that it remains so in the 21st Century. This is the story of six consecutive Saturdays in the summer of 1945. The war in Europe was over and – for the faithful in red ‘n’ yellow – Thistle did their very best to paint over the grey… The Road To Hampden 1945 →  1

Jaggernaut
Excellent read! There's a kind of uncanny valley effect from that picture, though........
robphil
Lovely seeing the name bill shankly among the jags' scorers. Think he was stationed at maryhill barracks. Utterly fascinating read...

His biography, on his page in the players' pages of the Archive, is also included in the Partickle "The Partick Thistle Returned". I've attached the biography below He met his future wife when at RAF Bishopbriggs. Â SHANKLY.docx

partickthedog
That was a fantastic read. I love some of the match reports with their word plays and alliterations. You just do not get lively and evocative expressions like "flannel footed finishing" in the bland prose that passes for match analysis these days.
Jaggernaut
It's slightly disappointing to read that the attendance for our victory final was the lowest in the Summer Cup competition's history. Wasn't the attendance also a record low for the Scottish Cup Final victory match in 1921? I know that there were particular circumstances each time, but the unfortunate records stand, and the circumstances will probably not be taken into account whenever data tables etc. get produced. I often think that Thistle are blessed and cursed at the same time!

Double good news... nowhere near the lowest Scottish Cup final lowest... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Scottish_Cup_finals And also the Summer Cup finals of 1964 and 1965 had lower attendances. Hot potato passed to Dundee United & Motherwell forever!
