Jim Spence Upsets The Rangers Fans

I just read today that the BBC had over 400 complaints about Jim Spence referring to the Rangers as " the old club that died " on Sportsound the other day. Apparently the BBC have apologised for this. I assume this pandering was to avoid a BBC ban at Castle Greyskull. Bad week for wee Jim after he probably spent some last week wailing outside of Tannadice begging to get in.

Can't see what the BBC have apologised for, did he do something wrong?

Most of the non-sports folk working at the BBC will have no idea of the background to this. If a lot of folks complain they will issue a bog-standard apology which actually admits nothing. i.e. "We are sorry if you were offended by .."

The fact that they are offended by someone saying something which is true and non-controversial tells you all you need to know about these folk.

400 complaints

400 H*ns who know how to complain to the BBC? Surely not! :shok:

Sevconia - an incurable mental condition whose main symptoms are religious sectarianism and the delusion that a football club that was formed a year ago has won 54 league titles and 33 Scottish Cups.

Graham Spiers has defended Spence.

"Spence's "crime" was an odd one. On Radio Scotland last week he blithely spoke words on air which a wide range of Scottish football observers, businessmen, insolvency people and more would have taken for granted. Spence referred to the liquidated Rangers Football Club plc as "the club that died".

Amid this furnace of ill-feeling, for many Rangers supporters this is a detested and deeply hurtful phrase. And it fairly roused them to action. Over 400 Rangers fans complained to BBC Scotland, who duly issued an apology for any offence that may have been taken.

Rangers and their director of communication, James Traynor, leapt into action by issuing their own statement, appearing to warn that the club's lawyers might get involved over a journalist such as Spence daring to use such words as "a dead club".

Traynor should certainly know all about that. Last year, still working as a Daily Record columnist, this is what he himself wrote: "Rangers as we know them died. Rangers FC are dead."

If, as Jim and Rangers are threatening, their lawyers go to war over Spence, it would surely count as the most farcical piece of litigation ever seen in Scottish football. For the sake of Rangers' own head of communication, one must hope the legal pursuit is not retrospective."

The hypocrisy of Traynor defies belief. At least we don't have put up with his moronic nonsense on the BBC this season.

Apparently Spence has QUIT the BBC because of this.

I think it's not so much the sevco fans he's quit over, rather than that the BBC didn't give him full backing over this: after all he told the truth. Oh wait a minute ...

Oh yeah and they're happy to employ Chic Young

A good article on this on the Scotzine website.

Great article by scotzine and by Graham Spiers.

Spiers especially should be commended for his courage (something I never thought I would say).

The guy is a self confessed Rangers fan, his face is well known to everyone, and he, his family, and his personal property must now be at serious risk of physical harm. So fair play to the guy for standing up here.

Go along with above post but the fact that an in depth article is required about such a non-event is in itself damning.

The first part of the story is about Rangers "fans" trying to intimidate and bully broadcasters and journalists. The BBC should not have caved and issued the apology. The second part is the blatant hypocrisy of Jim Traynor (some old scores being settled there?) and Chris Graham. We should be congratulating Spiers and Scotzine for speaking out and standing up to the Ibrox bullies.

Each time your tempted to think that society in West Central Scotland has moved on from the sectarian nonesense of the past you can allways rely on Sevco and their fellow travellers to add their tuppence worth. This nonesense emanates from pseudo sociological discussions of such issues as parity of esteem in areas like the Northern Ireland peace process. To begin with Sevco are supposedly in business to play football and not as a frony for an ideology or sort of belief. However, even ig the latter were true. in no political process in any democractic stae anywhere in the world is there approbation on telling the truth, plain abd simple. One can argue that a certain sensitivity is called for in relation to place names in some parts of Ireland or Israel/Palestine but FFS we're talking about a fitba' team here.
