Who Are The Jags Players In This Photo?

Recognise McKinnon, and Duncan. Makes it one of only 6 games at Celtic Park. Doesn't look like Nov 66, Dec 66 and 69 or Jan 69 (grass, weather etc). Reduces the options to 2..................

17 August 1968 LC 0-4

or

15 March 1969 L 0-1

Recognise Murdoch, McNeill, Johnstone, Connelly and Gemmell. Marrying up the Celtic numbers that are visible with teams in the press means it is likely to be 17 August 1968. If so, No 7 for Thistle looks like McLindon from the back.

Ritchie, Cumming, Brown, Cunningham, McKinnon, O'Neill, McLindon, Bone, Coulson, Flanagan, Duncan (Gallagher).

Simpson, Gemmell, O'Neill, Murdoch, McNeill, Brogan, Johnstone, Connelly, Wallace, Lennox, Hughes (Auld).

Looks like Flannigan being crowded out. Have a notion the other Thistle player might be either Gallagher on as a sub or Cumming - purely on the basis that it doesn't look like any of the rest of them. Can't put a name to the face.

I think the top pic is McLindon and McKinnon. Bottom is wee Johnny Flanagan getting in about them. In the middle: Arthur Duncan and I don't know who. Pretty sure it's not Cumming, and I think I'd recognise all the others, except Brown, who I don't even remember.

I don't remember seeing this one before. Taken from Stu Jag's site:

An interesting one for the identification sleuths.

Spurs_Away.jpg

My guess is that it's Tottenham Hotspur at the Lane. White shirts, dark shorts and the logo on the stand roof.

So that makes it 26 Sept 1956 (1-4) or 1 March 1958 (1-4).

Given the mud in the box, looks like March. Davie Mathers standing with his legs apart. (He played in both games.) Willie Crawford just over his left shoulder? Could be Dougie Baird on the line but can't do any better. Team that day was:-

Ledgerwood, Hogan, Baird, Mathers, Crawford, Donlevy, Smith, Wright, Kerr, McParland, Ewing.

The next three are oldies but goodies from Stu Jag's site. The oldies on the forum should easily recognise the ground here. Any other info? GW430_6.jpg

Definitely Shawfield. Hellish place to watch a game. Lights obscured the view, terracing steps were "shallow", pitch was narrow and the game was all throw-ins.

Number 6 is Andy Kerr. Thankfully his number is showing and although he played at Shawfield 5 times, he only played once at left-half.

28 August 1955 in the League Cup (0-2).

Ledgerwood, McGowan, Gibb, Thomson, Davidson, Kerr, McKenzie, Harvey, Crowe, Wright, Henderson.

Could the other Thistle player be Bobby Gibb?

Defo Shawfield.

So was the previous pic from a friendly or challenge mark against Tottenham Hotspur?

Matches home and away against Newcastle, Hearts, Hibs, Spurs and Manchester City were planned as part of an Anglo-Scottish Floodlight League but the SFL ordered the clubs to withdraw because it was not an existing competition (rather, it had been "invented" for the purpose and the SFL couldn't have that). Some of the games did take place but had to be billed as friendlies and the tournament came to nothing.

This spawned a new rule ("Rule 67") forbidding any member club from participating in any competition not sanctioned by the league.

Spot on, AFK. Though as it was season 1954-55, an August League Cup came would have been in 1954. The other player certainly looks like Gibb from his squad photo.

Kerr really seems to have been Mr. Versatility for us. In his 253 games he played at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, moving from being a full-back/centre-half/wing-half to being the No. 1 choice as centre forward for the entire 1958-59 season.

Life would be simpler if calendar years ran from 1 August to 31 July!

No fewer than six Jags failing to prevent this goal, it would seem. This was always one of my favourite old-style grounds.

From the left not sure who's behind the post, might be Colin McAdam, Andy Anderson, Ian Mckinnon, "Roger" Whittaker, Roughie and Alex O'Hara at Broomfield obviously. Edited by thisal
