The Jukebox Rebel
The Firhill Flyer is 90 today! He's the second oldest Scotland internationalist still going strong. I'm sure he'll be tuned in from Tiree to Tblisi tonight. So let's hope he's got two good reasons for celebrating this evening. Aw ra best Johnny... and 'mon the Scots!

mulguy jag
The term legend is constantly misused on this forum by fans towards past thistle players. Johnny McKenzie was a true firhill LEGEND . His name always crops up when fans discuss the all time greats. My own father raved about his ability as a player.

robphil
Johnny (and jimmy Davidson) were in the scotland team beaten 4-2 by the great Hungarians at hampden in1954 after which ferenc puskas said of the firhill flyer: 'I have never seen wing play of such a high standard...' arguably the greatest jag of them all...
ian_mac
By all accounts, he's the most talented player to ever wear the jersey. Hope he's doing well these days.

partickthedog
Apart from a compass point reference the North Stand has never been given a proper name. How about the Johnny Mackenzie Stand or even the Johnny Mackenzie North Stand? An appropriate honour to keep alive the memory of a supremely gifted footballer and supremely modest individual, and perhaps a little inspiration to players and fans alike. The Sunnylaw Jag
I wrote a piece on Johnny for the Scotland Epistles Facebook page which is an overview of Johnny's time with the national side. Although I have used the same quote as robphil mentioned above. Please have a wee look. https://www.facebook.com/scotlandepistles

The Jukebox Rebel
BTW TJR who is the coldest living Scotland player? Fully matured research by Matt Vallance, undoubtedly accurate: Bobby Brown (Rangers) - three caps – 1946/47 : 1951-52: d.o.b. 19/03/1923 Johnny MacKenzie (Partick Thistle) – nine caps - 1953-54 : 1955-56: d.o.b. 04/09/1925 Jock Aird (Burnley) – four caps – 1953-54: d.o.b. 18/02/1926 Doug Cowie (Dundee) - 20 caps - 1952-53 : 1957-58: d.o.b. 01/05/1926 Tommy Docherty (Preston NE and Arsenal) - 25 caps - 1951-59: d.o.b. 28/04/1928 Johnny Little (Rangers) – two caps – 1951-52: d.o.b. 08/07/1930 Ian McMillan (Airdrieonians and Rangers) – six caps – 1952-61: d.o.b. 18/03/1931. John Grant (Hibernian) – two caps – 1958-59: d.o.b. 16/06/1931 Mike Cullen (Luton Town) – one cap – 1955-56: d.o.b. 03/07/1931 David Herd (Arsenal and Manchester United - five caps - 1958-61: d.o.b. 15/04/1934 Eric Caldow (Rangers) - 40 caps - 1957-1963: d.o.b. 14/05/1934 There's a 9 year old thread on the subject at the very fine scottishleague.net forum http://www.scottishleague.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=

This sounds like a potentially great discusion for, er, the supporters federation (or summit). There'd be a few contenders and Johnny's a great shout for the flair vote and also, as you say, his humility. Another shout would be the George Easton stand, after all he was the faither of Firhill and gave a lifetime of devotion. We are all Robert Reid. Might he be the one to stand for us? It's a tough call, but in the final analysis I think I'd vote for the Jimmy McGowan stand. That's 4 for the list. You could probably make a case for at least 10 other worthies. It'd be interesting to hear other views on this one...

Thanks to everyone who looked at the Johnny MacKenzie piece on the Scotland Epistles Facebook page and liked it - a new record of 34 likes for an Epistle piece. As to the stand name, no disrespect to some of the elder Jags fans and players but I would like it to be someone who a good lot of people might have seen play; so the Jackie Campbell Stand it is or maybe Jim Slavin's Fat End
