Personal Favourites

BOAB McCulloch - What a character, free kick specialist - second top goalscorer as a full back, unbelievable.

Popped up with many a goal when we needed one and a player worthy of a mention here.

Not just that - he was full of heart. He could pick up the team on his own and get them winning. Not to mention the ability to injure an opposing player with a free kick when that player was foolish enough to stay too close! (A happy memory from Deadwood.)

No-one has mentioned SID here: wonderful touches on the ball. Still not enough grit to select him for an all-time favourite team, though.

Someone has mentioned Simon Storey - great at reading the game, which contributed to keeping him as sweeper, and keeping the formation at 5-3-2, perhaps after it should have been changed.

I am not keeping score so some if not all of these have been mentioned.

Joe Sweeney

John Arrol

George Mackie

Johnny Gibson

Alf Stamp(did anyone actually see him play even?)

I remember big Alf Stamp. John Arrol was a great goalkeeper. If he hadnt broke his leg, big Roughie would never have got back in the side. He was a great Wee Bertie signing. I loved Jackie Campbell, but an unsung hero was Andy Anderson, he was so consistent, especially as both knees were done Actually, did Bertie sign him? or was it McParland before he quit?.

Well I certainly saw Alf play on many occasions. At that time the reserves played at Firhill when the first eleven was away, and they attracted good crowds. Alf was the star attraction - very tall, very slim ,with a deceptively languid style. Very clever ball player. He emigrated to south Africa I think. He may have been an amateur with us - certainly had a QP connection. Happy memories!

Martin Lauchlan-moved away too early.

Kemajl Avdiu-brilliant header against East Fife. If he had not scored we would have lost that game and I think I am right in saying we would have been relegated instead of the Fifers.

Somebody has already mentioned Scott Chaplain. Fantastic attitude.

Good to see two mentions for the sublime George Mackie.

Can't believe someone mentioned John Workman- only bad memories of him

Mine would be Ian MacDonald- suddenly became our best player when we became really shite and everyone else left.

Also Alan Logan - a right wee trier

And maybe Kenny Watson from a similar era, I remember with fondness a free kick at Montrose that helped avert relegation to the bottom tier when Bertie came back and baled us out of DJ's mess

Glad to see someone mention Alan Logan and Joe Carson the born again striker. Also at that time was Gordon Smith who if I remember was a bit of a nutter who played upfront with Logan methinks. John Craig in the 70's i also liked, no relation to John but Tommy Craig's brother. ( Could we make a full team of Craig's over the years) Jim Melrose, who if we forget his time with Celtic had a good career in England after he left the Thistle was favourite of mine too.

Back in the days where the crowd that frequented reserve games were housed in the old Main Stand, my favourite memory of Alf was him scoring a goal and running over to the shed to celebrate the goal as if it was full! Great character.

I thought Mackie was a decent signing. He was a very effective wing back under Berties counter attack system.

I thought Dave McKinnon was a great signing.

I just never rated Mackie but Dave McKinnon was a player, so glad when we signed him!!

I still think he was a mythical figure of legend and that you people who went to reserve games in the 70's just made him up!

Next you'll be telling me Jackie Campbell scored a goal once or that we once scored 11 goals at Fir Park and still didn't beat Motherwell. Or that we signed Stevie Kirk and never played him before he went on to be a Motherwell legend or that we had goalkeepers called ARough followed shortly by BRough.

I assume Alf's appearance was against Berwick then?

Oh no.It's close season quiz time again. I refuse to look up my Official History book for this one though. Incidentally, isn't it time they updated that book and relaunched it?

I remember talking to Robert Reid about a new edition of the OH book some years ago, one in which all the spelling errors (players' names, typos etc.) could be corrected. He said it would cost a lot of money just to get the corrections made. But maybe now, 10 years later and with a lot of new history, the time is ripe. There could even be another subscription table.

I think that this thread is meant to be about players that the poster personally liked even though they were not perhaps one of the greatest players in Thistle's history. I was in my mid-teens then. This was my first experience of watching live 90 minute games and I did not have much idea about tactics and positioning and what makes for a good all round player. I sympathised with Mackie because he was not one of the star names who attracted all the attention and adulation but he put in a solid shift all the same. A bit like Andy Wilkinson in the Stoke team. So he qualifies as a favourite but I will readily concede to others having more experience and observational skills at that time that he may not have been a standout performer.

All Nacho Novo's fault, really late tackle in a game against Raith Rovers :mad2:

Aye I remember that. David was a top bloke when he was at Thistle, same as Alan Morgan, two of the players who were really good guys, always time to speak with people and engage with fans. Shame they both got injured as they both had a fair bit of talent too.
