Best player ever???

In terms of sheer technique, maybe, but he plays in a team of top class players. Maradona took a poor Argentina to a World cup final and he almost single handedly took Napoli to the top level (OK there were other decent players in that team but no world beaters, apart from Diego).

So in terms of effectiveness (maybe due to physical drive and aggression allied to his world class skills) I'd say Maradona edges it over the likes of Pele, Messi, Di Stefano and so forth.

Edited to add: of course Messi is still young so he's still get time to show he's the best say by helping Argentina to a World Cup or joining some wee team and winning the league with them ... maybe someone should tell him the perfect team for the latter is in Glasgow and don't play in blue or green?

I don't think George Best was quite the player Messi is but there's undoubtedly numerous similarities. Both players taken out their homeland at an early age and struggled to settle. Both received specialist training as kids. GB was probably the best player in Europe at around 20yo, LM likewise.

The differences would be that Best's scoring was an added bonus, whereas Messi's link play & teamwork is secondary to his goalscoring. That apart very similar players in size, balance and attitude (GB in his early twenties that is).

Did anyone else vent their anger at the telly when Adrian Childs tried to make out that Messi might not flourish in the premiership due to the quality of defending and lack of space? I stopped shouting once Gareth Southgate bascially told him he was talking tosh and that the defending in the premier league isnt anywhere near as good as they make out.

I dont understand why Mr Childs is still presenting footy shows after some of the idiotic things hes spouted this season.

There was a programme about Messi last night, and it showed two Maradona goals (including the hand of God one) and two Messi ones, that were amazingly similar. Here's one of them (sorry about the music!):

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Put Auld Crazy Legs Erskine's goal on Saturday next to Maradona and Messi, turn down the colour and you'll not be able to tell them apart (apart from the pasty white legs).

Mr Chiles (I believe his name is Chiles as in Voodoo Chile and not Childs as in Voodoo Child -Slight Return) is indeed a strange creature. I can't really see him having much of a TV career once he starts losing his boyish good looks.

He is the best, there is no comparison to anyone else right now, Ronaldo can f*ck off back to the sunbeds.

What I love about him is that he isn't like any other modern footballers. No diamond earrings, no suntan, no angular gelled haircut, no tantrums, no off-field champagne lifestyle, no ego. He plays the game with a smile on his face and gives the impression that he is just delighted to be given the chance to play every week.

You just can't help but love the wee man. When we inevitably fail to make the next world cup, I'm backing the argies.

Spot on. I don't doubt that his bank account is full and spilling over, but he plays the game with a boyish enthusiasm that tells you he'd play for nothing. For him, just playing football is everything. He also comes across as genuinely bashful when accolades and tributes are being fired at him. That was the strong impression I got when watching the ITV4 documentary about him the other night.

Best in my lifetime, and I had the privilege to watch Pele and Maradona.
