Mediocre Pundit
So, 23 clubs vote in favour of the new SPFL. A Lowland League was agreed yesterday and Jum Spence is saying almost 20 clubs have expressed serious interest. While the agreement isn't perfect this, in my opinion, fixes the three main flaws with Scottish football - one up/one down for top flight, income distribution for second tier, and a pyramid structure. Still to be ratified by a further meeting but, for once, things seem to be moving in the right direction. Thoughts?

Mediocre Pundit
It's all over twitter and the STV website - they had people waiting outside the meeting.
redandyellowallover
All over twitter at the moment so seems legit. Reasonably happy with this as a small step forward. The first divison clubs have been squeezed for so long that "bigger" clubs such as Thistle, Raith Rovers, Morton etc have seen the financial gap between them and the likes of Killie, St Mirren, ICT etc widen and we're constantly told that there's not enough "quality" to justify a 16 or 18 team SPL. Hopefully a few years of increased revenue for teams like Thistle should allow us to redress the balance and in time push for a bigger top league that can do away with splits and multiple games against the same teams.

Garscube Road End
Promoted a season too early???? Thats just our DUMB luck!! But next season, it will be interesting to see what we do with £1.7m in season 2014-2015?
Lindau
So even if we finish bottom next season we will get nearly 3/4 of a million pounds!. No lose situation as far as I can see. If we can survive for a few years we could take a fair chunk out of our debt Edited June 12, 2013 by Lindau

If we can survive for a few years we could take a fair chunk out of our debt As far as I know, (from recollection from the meet the board night) our debt is fairly small and would have been paid off entirely by now had the Bank of Scotland not put penalties in place for early repayment. Members Willjag
I seem to recall that Clubs that got relegated from the SPL got "Parachute Payments" for the next 2 seasons. Is this still the case?
scotty
Just a thought. Where does the new SPFL leave Queens Park?
yoda-jag
Just a thought. Where does the new SPFL leave Queens Park? Shhhhh, awkward questions, do not ask. In other related news: The draft rulebook for the new Scottish Professional Football League has been amended to allow clubs outside the top-flight to field trialists, which will particularly help Rangers as they seek to play new signings before their registration embargo ends in September. allyo
Would I be right in saying that 800k would just about pay our player wage bill? Which given that we got virtually nothing out of prize money this season and for the past few seasons is a massive change.
Pie Of The Month
http://www.scotsman.com/scotland-on-sunday/sport/football/play-offs-could-be-worth-up-to-6m-in-tv-revenue-1-2968762 Playoffs to be 3rd v 4th with winner playing 2nd with the winners of that playing 11th in the SPL. Also saying the winter break in the SPL is scrapped however SPL clubs can opt out of their games at the beginning of January and play them at a later date if they wish so they can have a mini winter break. lady-isobel-barnett
Playoffs to be 3rd v 4th with winner playing 2nd with the winners of that playing 11th in the SPL. . Much as a play off structure to and fro the top and second top tiers is most welcome and long overdue it further impacts on the repetitiveness of the first division (2nd tier). The winner of the 3rd & 4th place gets to play two teams each six times minimum. Because the league of ten is so small there's an increased likelihood that teams safely in play off positions will have dead 4th games against each other approaching the play offs (like we did with Peterhead). Nothing wrong with the system coming in, just once again the real bugbear of the claustrophobic leagues hasn't been addressed, Still chances that we'll get larger leagues sometime in the future have with this amalgamation/takeover slightly improved. kni
^ I agree about larger leagues - 3 leagues of 14 minimum without SPFL enlargement. The creation of the Lowland league is the first step towards more regionalisation. Two larger leagues with a regional pyramid below them could help the smaller clubs financially. There would be less travelling (and lower costs) for players and fans plus more local derbies to improve crowds.
