FFS, sign a guy from English non-league and punt him straight in the the top flight here in Scotland, yeah the standard of our league may not be great but that is at best a huge jump for the player to have to make, or at worst, a recipe for disaster. Promising player he may be, but the smart thing to do is loan him out to a team in a lower league up here where he will get the chance of regular first team football and Archie will be able to monitor his progress closely. Archie maybe has seen enough in him to think he might be good enough, but doesn't think he's ready for our first team. So if he does well while out on loan, brilliant he can come back to Firhill with another six months left to try and win a first team place in the team and earn himself a better, longer term contract. What is ******* stupid about that?

Oh I don't know, half a season's wage that could have been spent on a first team player? Also if hes not ready, but thinks hes could be, whys he been brought in on such a short deal? Don't see the gain short or long term out of this at the moment.

Nothing stupid but it's understandable that some posters are concerned that there is a lack of depth in defence. With Piccolo gone and BRE (presumably his replacement) out on loan, Lindsay will have to be ready to start if there are two injuries or suspensions.

Just taking a wild stab at this but maybe that's why he's been on the bench the last couple of games.

Keenan can play left centreback but Lindsay (who Dale covered for last season) would be preferred.

That's interesting as the club website described Keenan as right-back last season.

"Previously on the books of Celtic, Dale joined Thistle in the summer of 2011 as a Modern Apprentice. The right-back spent the second half of the 2012/13 season on loan at Second Division East Fife."

Crazy that there isn't a clause in his contract that he can be recalled if we suffer injuries at the back. Stupid Archie having him out getting match sharpness instead of sitting in the stand at Firhill. Glad we all know intricately the details of the club's transfers.

Are you taking the piss? I answered your question with as much clarity as I could have.

/\ Nonsense

Clubs taking loan players often pay a percentage, or in some cases all of wage. Likely BRE is not on a massive wage with us, so equally likely loaning out BRE is not costing club that much, far less half a season's wage.

And as soulful jag says if BRE does well on loan and improves enough to challenge for first team action with us he can earn a longer and better contract. If BRE doesn't impress and improve enough while on loan, he'll either be loaned out again for second half of the season, or feature as a reserve player or occasional sub in first team.

When you think about it, is loaning out a player you believe has potential (in this instance BRE) for six months to get them regular game time, match fit and competitive, and also to find out if they can make step up from level they have been used to, any different from a player we've been developing through our youth system for a few years where we send them out on loan for six months, before then incorporating them into first team squad if or once they are deemed good enough and ready?

BRE probably could have been loaned to a full-time team, I'm sure one of the 1st division clubs would have taken a punt on his due to his relative experience in the Conference. Him playing for a full-time team, however, means he can't train with us every day & get use to the squad etc. Loaning him to Airdrie allows him matches, in a competitive league whilst remaining at Firhill on a daily basis. Best of both worlds I would say, considering he would be unlikely to appear for the 1st team between now & January.

All players that are 22 are the same. All players that are 23 are the same. We should sign a player of every age so we get good variety.

Is this how it works?

No idea as no one has explained it that I've seen but it was suggested it was due to his age which is clearly not the reason

Still can't understand why we have signed and loaned him for half his contract and as is often the case no one at the club bothers to enlighten their customers

Agree it's a trifle strange but there could be options in the contract. Or it may be extended during the loan spell if the guy's up to the mark. Much as I hark on about the poor quality of PR emanating from the Club I don't think the nuts and bolts of a contract needs airing.
