I appreciate that there is a debate to be had about the application and effectiveness as a winger of David Amoo. What cannot be questioned is his penchant for being in the right place in the penalty box to score with his head. We are only approx 60% through the season and already he has scored 3 headed goals.

TJR and other stattos, when did a Jags player last score more than 3 headed goals in a top league season? If we extend this to lower tiers, I suspect that 1,2 or 3 out of Conrad Balatoni, Steven Craig and Kris Doolan may have achieved this feat in our promotion season 2012-2013. Apart from that, my recollection is that prolific headed scoring is relatively rare, and we may have to go back to such as Martin Hardie to find another example.

Couldn’t easily tell you ptd, sorry. Last term, 13 out of our 53 competitive goals (24.5%) came from headers. Conrad got 3 of those, as did Kris.

So far this season, 5 out of our 23 (21.7%) competitive goals have come from headers; 3 from David, 1 from Liam and 1 from Kris.

While I’m here, I can tell you goals from the right foot of Thistle players are down from 47.2% to 21.7% this season. Just thought you’d like to know. ^_^

"Dundee are the first side to return 4 first half goals against Thistle since Clyde led Dick Campbell's Jags by 4 goals to nil in a First Division encounter at Firhill in March, 2007."

Thanks for that reminder.

Stats Watch is like life…”

I remember Dennis McQuade scoring 3 with his head in a single match

Thanks for this, a cool slice of Jaggy trivia.

This was the first of Denis's two hat-tricks for the club, the only one which was all headers.

All goals came in the first half, with Thistle in white shirt and black shorts. There were 8,925 witnesses.

06.11.1971 Dundee United [h] W3-1 (SFL First Division - game 10)

Denis McQuade (1-0, 5 mins); Denis McQuade (2-1, 32 mins); Denis McQuade (3-1, 38 mins)

:detective: 23.01.2016 Inverness CT 0 Partick Thistle 0 (SPFL Premiership - game 22)

  • Thistle are 7 competitive games without a half-time lead.
  • Thistle are 6 League games unbeaten versus Inverness CT, extending the H2H club-record run in the category.
  • Thistle have failed to score in 11 out of 22 (50%) League games this season. Across the 10 main British Leagues, only Alloa Athletic (62%) have a greater deficiency.
  • The nil-nil draw takes over as Thistle's most common League result this season, yesterday being the 4th occurence.
  • In competitive action, Thistle have only conceded one solitary first-half goal in their last 8 away fixtures.
  • Thistle are exactly on course to match last season's historically impressive return of 12 clean-sheets in the League, which was the club's best top-flight return since 1930-31.

ongoing sequences...

  • 4 League games without a win, 30th Dec 2015 to date. (Longest run since: 12 games; 9th May 2015 to 26th Sep 2015. Club record: 26 games; 28th Nov 1908 to 2nd Oct 1909.)
  • 7 competitive games without a half-time lead, 12th Dec 2015 to date. (Longest run since: 19 games; 7th Mar 2015 to 26th Sep 2015.)
  • 23 competitive games without defeat when we score the opening goal, 23rd Sep 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 23 games; 20th Oct 2007 to 31st Jan 2009.)
  • 34 consecutive competitive appearances for Callum Booth, 14th Mar 2015 to date. (Longest run since: Aaron Taylor-Sinclair - 56 games; 27th Oct 2012 to 18th Jan 2014. Club record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 61 competitive games without a penalty award, 19th Sep 2014 to date. (Longest run since the club-record: 106 games; 10th Oct 1891 to 14th Dec 1895. *)
  • 79 competitive games without a goal from a penalty, 22nd Feb 2014 to date. (Longest run since the club-record: 114 games; 8th Aug 1891 to 14th Dec 1895. *)

* For these queries, the sequence begins with the introduction of the penalty-kick law in season 1891-92. The perceived club-record, although possible, should be treated with some degree of caution due to the scant nature of some match reports from the era.

Looking ahead...

Next weekend, Partick Thistle have the opportunity of achieving an unequivocal historical first for the club; namely, 4 consecutive wins over Dundee United.

It would be a helluva convoluted stat to get anything from this but that's four consecutive long distance games we've played without us scoring. I'm only including County, Aberdeen & ICT as "long distance".

Something clearly goes way wrong on the team bus once it gets past Perth & Dundee. Archie, sort it out!

only conceded 1 goal in those 4 games however, that is excellent by anyones standards

but yeh our goalscoring record has got to improve 4 0-0 draws this season, if we'd nicked a goal in 2 of them we'd be sitting a bit more comfortably with regards to 11th

We should have known when our first-ever game at Firhill was postponed!

No records for postponments I'm afraid. I can tell you that we've only ever had two known total monthly all-fixture wipeouts: February 1947 and January 1979. (note: January 1879 and November 1880 are other possibilities but I couldn't be sure as we may have had unreported matches.)

Most days without a game at Firhill within same season (and how the run was broken)

77 - 24.02.1979 Airdrieonians [h] W3-0 (Scottish Cup 4th Round)

70 - 31.01.1970 Hibernian [h] W3-1 (SFL First Division - game 19)

63 - 08.03.1947 Third Lanark [h] W3-1 (SFL Division A - game 25)

60 - 13.04.1949 St Mirren [h] W3-0 (SFL Division A - game 28)

57 - 24.01.1982 Dumbarton [h] L1-2 (Scottish Cup 3rd Round)

52 - 27.01.1987 Queen of the South [h] W3-0 (SFL First Division - game 28)

52 - 22.03.1994 St Johnstone [h] D0-0 (SFL Premier Division - game 33)

49 - 15.05.1943 Third Lanark [h] L2-3 (Glasgow Charity Cup Semi Final)

49 - 03.06.1944 Third Lanark [h] W3-1 (Summer Cup 1st Round, 1st leg)

49 - 05.02.1977 Aberdeen [h] W2-1 (SFL Premier Division - game 18)

49 - 01.02.1986 Ayr United [h] D2-2 (SFL First Division - game 23)

49 - 26.01.1991 Falkirk [h] D0-0 (Scottish Cup 3rd Round)

So even longer between home league games in season 78-79! 11 plus weeks between home league games is rather remarkable. About the same gap as the close season.

Is the legendary winter of 1963 not in there somewhere?

I always get slightly worried that I might have made a right Noel Hunt of it, but, naw, I'm a'rite B)

We managed to get a couple of Firhill Scottish Cup ties in between a long barren run without League games, hence the reason it doesn't feature above. Isolating the query to the League games only, the Winter of 63 is right up there:

Most days between League games at Firhill within same season (and how the run was broken)

OK, here's my question - Scott Fox saved a penalty during normal time today. I can't remember him getting anywhere near a penalty, far less saving one when he played for us. Does the wads of cash from Rossco allow him better penalty-saving skills?

The one that springs to mind is the penalty save v Cove Rangers in the Scottish Cup.

Also a crucial penalty save against Cowdenbeath in the League Cup. Maybe he only saves pens in cup games?

He did well to guess (or "read") what side the kick was going but it was a poor penalty very close to the keeper.

Edit: still, no treble for the 'tics, eh. Since R*ngers imploded they have won the league season on season but failed a few times in the cups. Of course their big squad - which no other team in the league can match - with a number of quality players gives them a huge advantage in the league but the biggest club can have off days or bad luck and if this happens in the cup they're out. With the other half not the force they were it's meant more clubs winning in the knock out competitions which is a good thing.

Edit again: of course Celtic have kindly been giving other teams a chance by persisting in playing Efe Ambrose.

Scott's penalty record wasn't great - but it was improving. He conceded 10 out of 10 before latterly improving this ratio; only 6 of his final 11 were conceded.

In his "all games" total, he physically stopped 3 out of 21.

Don't want to give you more work, but I'd be interested in seeing Kenny Arthur's penalty-saving record. I was never a huge KA fan, but always felt there was a decent chance of him saving penalties awarded against us.

Roughie too.

His opposite number yesterday hasn't saved a penalty in his professional career. 35 attempts, which I found even more surprising for a guy who's played in the EPL and has plenty of international caps. 3 missed target, but no saves.

Impressive stat!

Might most of those have been against higher-quality players than in Scotland?
