^ In modern times with 3/4 fixtures per opponent, it's fairly common for only one or two teams to thwart this aim, usually involving an arse cheek. Just last season we were thwarted only by the green one.

Lambie's Jags were the last to win points from everyone, and they did so two season's in-a-row in 1993-94 and 1994-95. Over the course of those two seasons Thistle avoided defeat in 9 out of the 16 League games against the Old Firm.

It was a lot easier to be "grannied" in the old days with just 2 games per opponent. Even Arbroath did the double against us in the top-flight back in 1972-73!

THREE-IN-A-ROW

2rrxcgx.jpg

The number one passed through 13,000 minutes of competitive game time yesterday and marked the occasion with a 3rd consecutive clean-sheet. (Photo c/o Partick Thistle Twitter)

:detective: 04.04.2015 Aberdeen 0 Partick Thistle 0 (SPFL Premiership - game 31)

  • For the first time, Archie fields the same starting eleven for 3 competitive games in a row.
  • It's the first time Archie has fielded the same starting eleven 3-in-a-row in the League since August 2014. Thistle are unbeaten over the course of these six Premiership games in question. Seven players have started in all six of the games: Scott Fox, Stephen O'Donnell, Conrad Balatoni, Stuart Bannigan, Kris Doolan, James Craigen and Steven Lawless. #oldskool
  • Despite just stepping off the plane from a round-the-world flight just 48 hours earlier, Lyle maintains his proud record of appearing in every Thistle game in his 2 spells, now sitting at 29-in-a-row.
  • Scott becomes the first Thistle goalie to return 3 consecutive clean-sheets in the top-flight since Alan Rough, early in 1982. Roughie's run of 4 included: Morton [a] D0-0, Aberdeen [h] D0-0, St Mirren [h] D0-0 and Rangers [h] W2-0. That run was broken with a 2-2 draw at... Celtic Park! (Aw naw!) George Niven holds the all-time club-record for League games, having returned 5-in-a-row back in 1968.
  • Across Britain's 10 main senior Leagues, only Partick Thistle and Shrewsbury Town are sitting on 3-in-a-row clean sheets.
  • Scott is the current squad leader when it comes to collecting League points-per-game (of those who have played 5+ games this season). His tally of 1.47 pts per game is way ahead of the team's average of 1.13.
  • Freddy is the clear squad leader when it comes to clean-sheets (of those who have played 5+ games this season). He has an astonishing 50% record, the result of 8 clean-sheets in 16 competitive games.
  • If this season's amazing ratio of conceding just 1.16 goals per top-flight game is maintained, it would register as Thistle's tightest top-flight defensive record since 1978-79 and our 7th best of all-time at this level.
  • Thistle have failed to score in 60% of this season's away League games. It's the worst such percentage record in Scotland, and third worst across the 10 main senior Leagues in Britain. Only the travelling fans of Aston Villa and Ballinamallard United (both 62%) have been goal-starved more often.
  • With 2 games to go until the split, Thistle are now mathematically unable to finish in the top six. Confirming this position at match day 31 equals the first and now joint-best attempt, which was made by John Lambie's Jags in season 2002-03.

ongoing sequences…

  • Thistle stay 9th in the Premiership for the 19th match in a row. (Longest run since the Club record: 33 games in 12th, 20th Sep 2003 to 15th May 2004.)
  • 22 consecutive competitive appearances for Stephen O'Donnell, 8th Nov 2014 to date. (Longest run since: Abdul Osman - 22 games, 13th Aug 2014 to 27th Dec 2014. Club record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games, 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 37 competitive games since back to back draws, 7th May 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 59 games, 18th Aug 2009 to 11th Dec 2010. Club record: 201 games, 11th Feb 1957 to 1st Apr 1961.)

20 YEARS OF HURT

Ever since that gallus night in 1995 it's been a losing run of record-breaking proportions for Glasgow's oldest professional club.

:detective: 08.04.2015 Celtic 2 Partick Thistle 0 (SPFL Premiership - game 32)

  • Stephen registers the season-best appearances run for any player, now standing at 23 consecutive competitive games. His own personal best was 48 competitive games, set in December 2012.
  • Kris's non-appearance means that his club-record 37 substitutions in season 2012-13 is now mathematically safe for another season at least.
  • James is sent-off for the first time in his senior career.
  • Seven consecutive penalty awards have now gone to the opposition. It's the longest streak of awards against Thistle that I know of, with my comprehensive records being strong back to 1996.
  • This defeat once again re-sets the all-time club-record for consecutive League losses to any same team, now standing at 16. #hurting
  • Thistle lose to nil for the 12th time time in the League this season. We've only went beyond this total twice before; 13 times in 1908-09 and 15 times in 1995-96.
  • Thistle's last 11 competitive away defeats have been to nil. The last time we scored and lost away was in the 4-3 reverse at Fir Park, 14 months ago.
  • Failing to score in ten of this season's sixteen away matches means that, of all the clubs in Britain's 10 senior Leagues, Thistle now have the joint-worst ratio (62.5%) for the category.
  • Thistle have completely failed to score against both Aberdeen and Celtic in this season's League campaign - a post-reconstruction first. You have to rewind all the way back to season 1973-74 to find the last time we were totally blanked by two League opponents, when the nets of both Dumbarton and Morton went unrippled.
  • Thistle have now lost 8 competitive games in a row in games where the first goal has been conceded to the opposition.
  • There were no yellow cards for either side in any of this season's League matches against Celtic. I don't know if that's ever happened before, but it's definitely a unique occurrence for Thistle's League seasons in the last 20 years.

ongoing sequences…

  • Thistle stay 9th in the Premiership for the 20th match in a row. (Longest run since the Club record: 33 games in 12th, 20th Sep 2003 to 15th May 2004.)
  • 23 consecutive competitive appearances for Stephen O'Donnell, 8th Nov 2014 to date. (Longest run since: Kallum Higginbotham - 33 games (Sat-10-Aug-2013 to Wed-26-Mar-2014). Club record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games, 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 38 competitive games since back to back draws, 7th May 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 59 games, 18th Aug 2009 to 11th Dec 2010. Club record: 201 games, 11th Feb 1957 to 1st Apr 1961.)
  • Thistle are 11 competitive games without defeat when we score the opening goal.
  • Thistle are 17 competitive games without a win when we lose the opening goal.
  • Thistle's last 7 competitive wins have all been to nil.

In my post-match stats report for the Celtic game I wrongly stated that Stuart was the second Jag through 3,000 minutes competitive game time for the season.

On my mega-packed spreadsheet report, my eyes had picked up on the total 3001 minutes - but I was looking at his 2013-14 season column. Doh! The bullet-point has now duly been removed from post #255.

All being well, both he and Stephen should pass through the aforementioned barrier in the next game.

Sorry about that.

p.s. please DO holler if you think you see something wrong in Stats Watch, I'd really appreciate it, even if you're not quite sure, 4 eyes are always better than 2...

ANOTHER THISTLE WIN TO NIL - IT'S A NEW JOINT-RECORD

Three points, another clean-sheet and the share of a club-record. Wasn't a bad day's work, was it?

:detective: 11.04.2015 Partick Thistle 2 Motherwell 0 (SPFL Premiership - game 33)

  • Thistle's last 8 competitive wins have been achieved in tandem with a clean-sheet. This consecutive run equals the club-record for the category, the streak having maxed-out at 8 on 5 occasions previously; 24.11.1906 to 07.12.1907, 13.11.1915 to 12.02.1916, 06.05.1916 to 25.11.1916, 06.12.1997 to 15.08.1998 and 05.03.2002 to 02.11.2002.
  • Thistle's last 7 League wins have been achieved in tandem with a clean-sheet. You have to rewind back to the first World War to find the last time such a streak occurred for the club in the top-flight. The streak in question actually stands as the club's all-time League record for the category, which was 9-in-a-row from 19.04.1916 to 25.11.1916.
  • Conrad registers his first assist of the season. Well, he does with me anyway. As is so often the case, the network of stats databases get it completely wrong and give it to Freddy Frans. Zut alors!
  • Freddy's awesome clean-sheet tally rises to 9 from his 18 competitive games.
  • Scott and Conrad both share this victory as their 50th League win with the Jags.
  • Archie draws level with "the committee" as he registers his 18th win in the managers top-flight table. Next target is Davie McParland who's in 7th place with 31 wins.
  • 2014-15 has registered as Thistle's best split position to date. We will be in either 8th or 9th with a decent tally of 38 points, 8 more than the previous best which was set by Archie's Jags last season. The previous split positions were - 2013-14 (30 pts, 11th); 2003-04 (18 pts, 12th); 2002-03 (29pts, 10th).
  • Archie's overall top-flight points per game tally (1.07) is competing well with John Lambie's (1.10). 46 points this season would actually see Archie nudge ahead of the great man in this statistical category.
  • Goodbye to 9th! It was jointly the 3rd longest run in the same position, or joint-top when considering mid-table positions only. We once ran 20 games in 6th from 26.12.1914 to 17.04.1915, but many of these were equal placings in the days before goal average was introduced to seperate teams on the same points total. This season's run could therefore be regarded as a unique one-off.
  • Thistle have not been in the play-off spot since the final pre-split game of last season, the 4-2 defeat to Hearts at Firhill. By the time of the next match, the Jags will have spent more than a year in Scotland's Top 10.

ongoing sequences…

  • 24 consecutive competitive appearances for Stephen O'Donnell, 8th Nov 2014 to date. (Longest run since: Kallum Higginbotham - 33 games (Sat-10-Aug-2013 to Wed-26-Mar-2014). Club record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games, 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 39 competitive games since back to back draws, 7th May 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 59 games, 18th Aug 2009 to 11th Dec 2010. Club record: 201 games, 11th Feb 1957 to 1st Apr 1961.)
  • Thistle are 12 competitive games without defeat when we score the opening goal.
  • Thistle are 17 competitive games without a win when we lose the opening goal.
  • Thistle's last 8 competitive wins have all been to nil.

In all my excitement at Thistle chasing new records, missed one:

Yesterday's win was the first time we've won 3 home top-flight games in-a-row with a clean-sheet since 1977:

29.10.1977 Motherwell [h] W1-0 (SFL Premier Division - game 11)

12.11.1977 Clydebank [h] W1-0 (SFL Premier Division - game 13)

26.11.1977 Aberdeen [h] W1-0 (SFL Premier Division - game 15)

The category record is 5... so many record-making targets at the moment...

edited to say the previous category record was 5, not 4. I have no idea why I typed that really. I was probably eating a roll and sausgae and not concentrating.

ARCHIE NECK AND NECK WITH LAMBIE

Not content with just keeping clean-sheets, the defenders are now providing the match-winners!

:detective: 25.04.2015 Ross County 1 Partick Thistle 2 (SPFL Premiership - game 34)

  • Thistle win by 2 goals to 1 for the first time in over a year. The last such victory came at Rugby Park in the first game of the split last season. Double weirdly, that was also an away game in which we came from behind to win.
  • Partick Thistle have conceded exactly one goal in each of their last four trips to Victoria Park.
  • This victory ends a run of 17 competitive games without a win when we lose the opening goal.
  • First time two Thistle defenders have been on the scoresheet since August 2013 when goals from Stephen and Conrad secured a 2-1 League Cup win at home to Ayr United.
  • There are none more potent than Stephen for goals this season - his combi-tally for goals+assists now sits at ten. By my reckoning, the table reads: Ryan Stevenson (10), Stephen O'Donnell (10), Steven Lawless (10) and Kris Doolan (9).
  • Archie's top-flight points-per-game tally (1.097) is now neck and neck with John Lambie's (1.098), when 3 points per win are applied to all seasons.
  • According to OPTA (pre-match), Partick Thistle have been awarded only 293 free kicks in this campaign; the lowest total in the League.
  • In League football, Thistle continue to have a better record against Ross County at Victoria Park than at Firhill. This strange phenomenon has prevailed in all 3 tiers.
  • In all competitive matches at Victoria Park, Thistle lead County by 10 wins to 9. At Firhill, County lead Thistle by 7 wins to 5.
  • At the time of posting, Thistle have the 4th best goal-difference in the Premiership. If we could maintain that position until match day 38, it would be the club's highest ever finish in this category. More than 50 years ago, Willie Thornton's Jags finished with the 4th best "goal average" as it was then, in season 1962-63. Only once, in season 1947-48, have the club finished with the third best "goal average" in Scotland's premier league.

  • 25 consecutive competitive appearances for Stephen O'Donnell, 8th Nov 2014 to date. (Longest run since: Kallum Higginbotham - 33 games (Sat-10-Aug-2013 to Wed-26-Mar-2014). Club record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games, 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 40 competitive games since back to back draws, 7th May 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 59 games, 18th Aug 2009 to 11th Dec 2010. Club record: 201 games, 11th Feb 1957 to 1st Apr 1961.)
  • Thistle are 12 competitive games without defeat when we score the opening goal.

:thinking:Poser...

When was the last time 2 Thistle defenders scored for Thistle in the same top-flight match?

Ayr Utd in the League Cup is not a top flight game.

My guess would be the game where Adam headed in an Eve corner

Decided to post this here as I believe it is the thread for the slightly obsessive and numbers oriented.

Our remaining chances of relegation this season..,

Motherwell have 4 games. There are 81 combinations of results based on three outcomes per game (win, lose draw), 3^4. Only one scenario puts us in danger (4 wins) - Chances are 1 in 81

Assuming this, we have 3 other games (already assumes that Motherwell beat us). 3^3 = 27 outcomes. 4 outcomes keep us in danger (3 defeats or 2 defeats and a draw in any single game). 4 in 27, or approx 1 in 7.

Assuming this, Ross County have 3 games (already assumes that Motherwell beat them). Ross County need 5 points from 3 games. Slightly less than half the scenarios provide this outcome. But conservatively call it 1 in 2.

Assuming all this, Killie would need one point from 2 games, Makes little difference to the stats. Conservatively give them the point. (but would you fancy them against Ross County or Accies?)

Assuming everything above, we are in the play-off, which statistically we have a 50% chance of winning. Therefore 1 in 2.

Combined probability is 81 x 7 x 2 x 2 = 1 in 2,300 chance of relegation. We are 99.96% safe!

But I'll probably regret this. Add in the Thistle factor and it's about 50/50.

Okay, so, last time we won three top flight games in a row?

Wins by a two/three goal margin within a top flight season?

50 points in a top flight season? (That would be good)

Third best goal difference in the top flight? (Would be excellent)

Shut outs in a top flight season?

Archie must go?

Last week I asked "When was the last time 2 Thistle defenders scored for Thistle in the same top-flight match?"

My guess would be the game where Adam headed in an Eve corner

Adam Black and Evelyn Morrison? (hee-hee, just a wee historian's joke there.)

DD, You're actually spot-on i.e. it's never happened before. Arguably...

When I asked this question I never knew the answer, I just thought, "I'll check that during the week" so I can assure you it wasn't intended as some sort of trick question. As usual when I venture into quizmaster land I get myself into trouble, I never seem to learn. :help:

Gordon Rae and Davie Irons "paired up" on the scoresheet on two occasions in 1991-92 but Davie was playing up front on both occasions so that was ruled out.

Then there was the time in 1976 when the Hansen brothers famously both scored against Hearts. John, however, was on duty as a roving midfielder that day, so that too was ruled out.

And so, the "modern era" of full-backs and centre-backs passes bye without an occurence.

As an important aside, I read some interesting match reports this week which refer to Thistle experimenting with defence, and it seems that Donnie McKinnon in the mid 60s was one of the first to be considered as one of these new fangled "centre backs".

Beyond this, there were only two further occasions worth considering, both occuring in season 1962-63 when full-backs and half-backs netted.

Sandy Brown (full-back who walloped a mean free kick) and Martin Ferguson scored against Hearts in September and then Sandy got on the scoresheet again alongside John Harvey in a New Years game at Shawfield.

The half-backs (especially the centre-half) of this era certainly had defensive duties to perform but after much reading and consideration of the subject, I conclude that they're primarily part of the midfield, and I think that most commentators seem to concur with this view.

I think I'd be right in saying that John Harvey would be considered a midfielder by Thistle fans of that era, it would certainly be interesting to hear from any of the older boys on here in that regard?

50 points in a top flight season? (That would be good)

Our current points total of 44 sits at 6th highest of the 82 top-flight seasons. 3 wins would give us a joint-record. Ooft! What a target to aim for.

53 pts - 1930-31

48 pts - 1921-22

46 pts - 1915-16

46 pts - 1920-21

46 pts - 1962-63

44 pts - 2014-15

Whilst the above is a matter of fact, best-practice is obviously to level the playing field by applying a theoretical 3 points for a win to all seasons.

In this regard, we could yet make the Top 20 of the 82 top-flight seasons (by points totals) or the Top 30 (by points-per-game).

Post-reconstruction (a more realistic comparison for the size of League we are in these days) we could attain record totals both by points totals and by points-per-game.

I expand on this in the spoiler below, egg-heads only need apply...

In the list below, a theoretical 3 points for a win has been applied to all top-flight seasons.

2014-15 is currently sitting at the 48th highest total of the 82 top-flight seasons, with the potential to yet reach the top 20.

The standard disclaimer here is that it was a lot easier pre-1975 with bigger Leagues and lesser quality opponents.

With this in mind, note the post-reconstruction best which was 52 points set in 1993-94. A post-reconstruction record is therefore "up for grabs", the required points total being 53.

Of course, in 1993-94 we played 44 games, so, again, the above list does not deliver a truly balanced comparison.

To be unequivocal, the totals above should be futher re-evaluated on a points-per-game basis, thus removing the bias created by the varying number of games played, season by season.

Having applied this, 2014-15 (1.26 ppg) is currently sitting at the joint-48th highest total of the 82 top-flight seasons, with the potential to yet reach joint-31st (1.39 ppg).

Again, the standard disclaimer here is that it was a lot easier pre-1975 with bigger Leagues and lesser quality opponents.

With this in mind, note the post-reconstruction best which was 1.31 points-per-game, set in 1977-78 and, in a strange statistical quirk which merely serves to underline the incredible consistency of Bertie Auld's Jags, was equalled in each of the two seasons thereafter. Despite Bertie's impressive tallies, a post-reconstruction record is still "up for grabs", with 50 points (1.32 ppg) being the required total if Archie is to outdo the past-master.

Third best goal difference in the top flight? (Would be excellent)

Aye, hunting down Inverness just 3 goals better-off. Would be some achievement. See the final bullet point in post #262 for my answer to this query! #psychic

Shut outs in a top flight season?

I'm on it.

Archie must go?

Up to lift the Scottish Cup in 2021?
